thanks sujit and doc sahab!

1. wat voltage do we normally get with "engine_on" mode?

2. is it close to 14.4V? (engine-on) if not, wass the significance of rating at 14.4V?

With the engine running and a good healthy alternator you will get between 13.6 to 14.4 volts DC in your car.

Voltage maintains at 13.8V in most of the cars with engine on.

in Idle, 14.6 is a bit high. However i would not trust that display to be accurate. Most cars idle between 13.6 to 13.9, like JB says and revved enough, go up to 14.4, 14.5.

If your car gives 14.6V at idle (i would check that with a properly calibrated meter if i was you, i doubt it very much) then it will shoot up to 15.8 volts when revved higher.
This is not good for your 12V battery, your 12V electricals and many other things in your car and will reduce the life of the battery considerably.

If the meter you trust is also showing 14.6 in idle, then i sugest you visit a good electrical workshop and reduce the voltage at the charging system.

LBM's battery died last day. Maybe its coz of this reason.

hello.. um my car idles at 14.4 usually.. sometimes it starts up at 14.5 or 14.6 also.. but thats when i start the car and its cold.. so the car idles at 1800 rpm odd when started cold.....but it has always been like that.. even when i had my exide it used to start up and read 14.4.. but after i got my optima... i see when i start it idles at 14.5 when i start up.. but drops to
14.4 in like a minute... ..
dunno if it means anything.. just stating my observations .. cause even i get the readings off my alpine head unit.. connected to the amp via the amp link.. also... the reading on the alpine amp is always 13.8 or 13.9.. even at startup.. only my cap registers 14.5 odd when i start.. then drops to 14.4 in a minute...
hope this helped in any way
booom

truly speaking, I would not trust the so-called Voltmeters in the HU's and all these fancy time-pass displays and most capacitors.

100 % ok sir I check the same as soon as I can and I found out that there was a diff of .3 to .4 volt in the fancy display. The actual readings where close to 14.1 to 14.3 volts when idle and never rose to more than that.....Thank god I am saved.........
