Vineet, Sam Kapasi gave this solution.
Use a cigarette lighter socket to USB charger and connect it to the external HDD.

Btu nitrous, my HDD has just one USB port. there isn't a separate power or USB power jack. Is there such a piggyback USB charger available.

I didnt understand how exactly this connection suggested by Sam will work.

EDIT : nitrous i searched but couldn't find Sam's post where this is mentioned. can you link me to that post.

@Nitrous - what if the HDD has only one USB port? Most of the new WD portable HDDS (any brand HDDs) have only one port. I am curious to know about a solution for this as I am planning the same setup.

@leadf00t - I have the same 4050 and similar setup where front comps and sub powered by amps while rear co-ax powered by HU. I am currently using a 2GB pendrive. I have a brand new WD 160 GB passport HDD and currently files are being copied to that. I will try this out and post my experience.

@redfire you have a very similar setup to what i have. I am awaiting your experience. My 8GB Sandisk pendrive works fine but not the WD passport 250GB .

Try a dual USB cable
It has 2 USB ports on one side, and one on the other.
So you connect the main port to HU, the aux additional port to USB charger, and the endpoint to your HDD.
I will post a pic soon

He wants a MP3 HU and a decent pair or speakers. Budget is 5k. Suggestions please?

Is a USB HU possible? Any brands are preferred.

In need of help

Hey guys,
I need some serious help...I'm coming over to India and i brought with me a 500watt Sony Explod amp and a Bazooka amp, a 12" Sony Explod sub ( the old ones) and an MTX 10" sub. Everything is good expect for the car. i just bought a Maruti Sx4 ZXi. Is there any way that I can hook all of that up into the car. I do not care how much more to spend on it i just want it all to be working and fitted into the car. I'm gonna be in the north East of India so no luck getting good technicians there. Please advice me on what I should do.

Didsomeone experience a similar problem while connecting a HDD to the HU.
I am running my rear 6x9 coax on the HU and front comps and sub running on the 75.4 If i turn off the rear coaxs when i run the HDD ,will the HU be able to provide enough juice.

P.S. i am scared to try any more stunts without proper advice since I also have a lot of other data on the HDD and don't wanna to mess up with it .

Gurus . any solution to the above problem??

EDIT: I read the manual and it says the HU supports hdd upto 250 GB.

If the HDD has only a USB port and no additional external power port which means it will draw power from your HU USB port to start and function. These issues even occur with computers. If the SMPS(Power Supply) of the computer is of less wattage or say if the load exceeds on the SMPS by connecting "n" number of USB devices like scanner, printer, webcam etc then the computer would reboot everytime you try to connect some additional USB powered device to the computer.
The fault is either of the SMPS or the USB device that could be drawnig more power or yet simple that the load is more then the SMPS can support.

So lets say if we apply this logic in your situation then either your HDD is drawing more power then its suppose to draw or your HU USB port isnt supplying sufficient power to the HDD and hence it reboots or turns off may be.

Tush,I already mentioned that in my first post that the problem is mostly with my hdd pulling more power than the HU can provide.

I needed an solution and more imporatnatly to know if someone had similar experinces.

another option would be to try out various portable HDD models/brands ( from friends etc)
the current consumption varies between models, and you should be able to find one which works well

man there ought to be a thread on this! go cabbie go!
do look at the classifieds threads where a guy is giving away a sony sub ( re. 1 ) i think theres another guy who wants to give away sony speakers and an hu too.

if you get hold of the sony speakers and the hu and sub for free! the cabbie will be most happy.
i wish you all the luck!

you deserve to get the above stuff.i would request the sellers/give away ers to help you out!

I've always wondered about the following setup for an indica

put in one of those "philips" 1" dome tweeters with 4" face plate (like this one) on the dash, 5" woofer (bolton/dainty/well built local make) on the doors, and 2 8" woofers for the rear + another pair of tweeters. the speakers + MDF tray should cost ~3k, and should sound a lot better than some more expensive speakers

I guess you will need to
1. Buy some speakers (coaxial or component) for the front
2. Post the model numbers of your amps for wiring suggestions
Any particular reasons for choosing 2 subs of different sizes from different companies?

Most passengers would prefer that the speakers are mounted in front. The god-awful racket coming from just behind my ears, has made me, on more than one occasion, request the cab driver to switch off the music. Needless to say, most drivers felt a little insulted at this suggestion.
Most cab drivers will not want to compromise their boot space by installing a sub. So I guess it will have to be an HU + front coaxials or components.

Hehe thanks Magma. The cabbie does not want a subwoofer so no point getting those 8"ers. I couldn't find anyone wanting to give away an HU and speakers else would have requested them to put them for good use.

If you are aware of any such posts, please let me know

I agree. He wants an MP3 HU (USB will be a ++ since he wants to use a Pen drive ), a decent pair at the back. For the front, I'm donating him my new like Pioneer coaxials already.

Guys suggest brands please!!!
