Just like the A-Star isn't the Alto or 800 we've beeing seeing.

The evolution of Sumo didn't begin with Grande but much earlier. There were improvements made to the suspension, engine, transmission, interiors, even before the Grande appeared. Also, the improvements will not stop at Grande which too will have successors.

Changes & improvements will never stop.

Calling the Sumo Grande just an extension of the Sumo is like saying the i20 is the new Getz.

My question : How much of change is a new version, and how much of change is a new car by itself ?

In the specific case of the Sumo vs Sumo Grande, Just how many points / features in the entire vehicle are common between these two vehicles ?

Condor, there is a difference between an ENTIRELY NEW platform (which the i20 is) versus making changes / improvements to a 16 year old platform (which the Grande is). The Indica Turbo is an evolved early-gen Indica, but the Vista is a revolution. Under the skin, the Grande is pretty much a regular Sumo (with improvements of course). Similarly, the current Bolero is in no a revolution. It is merely an improved version of the Armada! Lots of improvements...yes....but the DNA is pretty much the same.

By going through the discussions on this thread I would like to add my bit, though I am going OT here. The improvement what TATA has done to the SUMO to make it the GRANDE is more than what TOYOTA has done to make the Corolla into the ALTIS.

GTO, agree on the others. But what makes you say that the Sumo & the Grande share the same platform ? How much are the similarities between these two ? The new parts of the Grande easily outnumber than what these two share (if any, except for the smaller stuff).

Btw, coming back to the Winger .. isnt it so - french ?

Magic circles ?!

The Winger seems to be a quite spacious inside. I saw a couple of them, and they seem to be moving fast and quite effortlessly as well (good NVH, I mean). The TCIC engine has been put to good use, it seems.

@Blue Thunder, the french connection is no secret. The focus in my post here was intended to be the extra-high roof.

Btw, narrow rubber, high roof-line .. hope it is not extra prone to doing somersaults.

Oh, ok !

The high-roof version is a common design for load-carrying vans in all of Europe (not just France) : they are mostly used as city-runabouts.

The high roof helps you do it standing - the commute, that is.

Tata Magic hard-top modification

Found this Tata Magic on my last trip to Kolkata in December '08. Posting pics of the same. Wiped off the number plate to protect the privacy of the gentleman who owns it. Total spent on mods.: 2L. Includes a car-fridge inside.

[quote=directinjection;1060845]make or design? One of the reasons why Tata vehicles cost less is the fact the R&D is done locally right here in India. Maruti-Suzuki hasn't designed a single automobile in India in 25 years of its existence whereas Tata has been doing it for decades.

Heck, as of now Maruti-Suzuki doesn't even have a R&D centre. It's planned but is still to come up!

I thought the current zen ( the estilo ) was designed in India . Correct me if i am wrong .

The Maruti zen Estilo was not designed in India , It is the 1st generation Suzuki MR Wagon that was introduced in Japan in 2001. The 2nd generation of Suzuki MR Wagon was introduced in 2006 in Japan & in the same year Maruti Suzuki Introduced this phased out model as Maruti Zen Estilo

Is Tata testing a hard-top / redesigned version of the Magic? Spotted a couple of Tata Magic being tested in Pune. Managed to snap one.
