I think Bangalore-Chennai is fully double tracked and electrified. Am I missing something?
Meanwhile here are a couple of snaps taken sometime back. (From my collection of Makalidurga!)

Re: Railway Pics

A few clarifications:

Brindavan regularly gets WAP7 in the MAS-SBC leg. If you have spotted anything else, then it is an offlink. However, when going from SBC to MAS, it gets a WAP4. Have seen this multiple times.

The SBC to MAS stretch is fully doubled and electrified. MPS is 110kmph AFAIK. Brindavan constantly does triple digit speeds after bangalore outskirts.

Off late I have not been to the railway station to observe this. Thanks for the update.

Right after KJM (Krishnarajapuram). Both Lalbagh and Brindavan does a good 110 kmph unless there any speed restrictions. However a few kms before Jolarpettai (JTJ), the speeds reduce as its downhill.

I will reiterate, the WAP7 has some serious accelerating capacity even with a 24 coach rake.

Re: Railway Pics

I was a regular traveller in the mas-sbc-mas line during the 80s. There was only Brindvan express starting from chennai at 7 am and returning the same evening by 7-8 pm(not sure). Those days, electrification was only from mas-jtt, from then on it was diesel to sbc. Although the electric locos pull faster, the diesels were fantastic in their raw top speed. I would always wait anxiously for the engine change at jtt and enjoy the ride after that.

Lal Bagh came much later in the late 80s I guess and was the same only coming in the opposite direction.

Are you sure the first one is a 3d?
It is a re-built WDM3a(3100hp) or a 3C(3300hp) from Itarsi shed from what I know.
I don't think 3d had re-built versions. They were made from DLW and had the numbering staring from 11xxx.

KK do get 3d's in their dual combo, which are still in their original livery which is blue & white. In fact they had twin 3d's for a while and could be heard a km away due to their distinct exhaust note, the next best note after the original WDM 2c,(now called WDM 3a)

I some how don't understand that even with that capacity the south bound super fasts
(TN/GT/AP/KL/KK) still get the WAP4/5. I see WAP7 mostly in Rajdhani/Shatabdi.

Any production/procurement related issues? Or the equation has changed? (My read point is old)

WAP7 is quite powerful especially the acceleration is quite quick.
Two weeks back had been to Chennai. While onward was in the Chennai exp. WAP4a from Guntur and return
by Charminar WAP7.The accelaration part after halting in the station and pick up of speed was quite
amazing with 24 coaches.
Speed wise both seem to be good.

Re: Railway Pics

As far as I know, P5s are assigned to shorter and faster rakes. Their tractive effort is lesser due to bo-bo configuration. However, they can attain higher speeds and hence is preferred for shatabdhi etc. However, on the other hand, longer rakes get P7 usually, due to their higher tractive effort and excellent acceleration. So taking that into account, KK TN express must usually get P7s rather than P5. Same is the reason for dual wdm3 compared to a single wdp4. Maybe in the future we can see DP4-B doing duty in non electrified territory, but for now it will be alco action!

And no debate on the accelaration of the P7. 24 coach SG rake? No problem. Shows how much difference the three phase technology makes.

Re: Railway Pics

We had been to Vizag in March 2009. Found these pictures that we had taken during the train ride from Vizag to Araku Valley. It is an amazing ride with lots of tunnels! The quality of the images is not good as they were taken using an old Canon point and shoot camera.

Please note that the last five pictures were taken during the train journey from Vizag to Hyderabad (Godavari Express).

Rahul Waghmare.

Re: Railway Pics

Please be very careful when photographing from trains or from close to tracks. A rail-fan Swapnil David lost his life two days back when fell down from a running train while trying to photograph a crossing train on the other track
