BEST Bus Automatic Transmission

I suppose quite a few of you have seen BEST buses in Mumbai with automatic transmission. Anyway for those of you who haven't, there are quite a few out there. This is a picture I clicked a couple of years back.

Probably never will there be SX4 A/T. They are yet to bring up diesel 1.3 90bhp car, then just forget about the A/T.

Hey...I did not know this.

This is simply amazing stuff.

I always wanted our buses to be A/T with power steering.
Then the drivers will never be tempted to stop right in front of you without pulling over to left...

Do these buses have power steering as well?

And who is supplying them? Tata or Ashok Leyland?

Seriously. Anyway lets keep this thread about the BEST A/T's. I've been in quite a few, the shifts cause a fair bit of jerks but its not a rude shock or something, just that they're noticeable and prominently felt during the commute. The gearbox has a manual override of sorts as well, nit a + and - but different positions from 1 to the top gear. I have no idea whether they're four or five speeders. As expected, the engine of the bus gets really really raucous by the time the shift is implemented by the auto box. I guess it saves the driver quite a bit of effort. Some effort that they can channelize into driving sensibly rather than cutting three lanes I hope!

I'm sorry Anand I have answers to neither of those questions. I think it is Ashok Leyland? I really don't know. I hope someone on the forum will be of help to you.

I guess all newer BEST buses have power steering. Can't say about this one. For a second thought, all new heavy vehicles have power steering standard by law. Correct me if I am wrong.

MODS, THREAD ALREADY EXISTS

Mumbai BEST Buses go hi-tech?

Some of these A/T busses came to Kolkata itself mid-80's. These were the Ashok Leyland Titan.

Later these busses were retrofitted by the long handle manual gearshift (obviously after changing the gearbox).

The first time I came across an A/T BEST in Mumbai was atleast 10 years ago, believe it or not. That time a friend had JUST bought a Nissan Sunny A/T so that's how I can place the 10-years ago figure. And I was very fascinated by the concept then. After that there wasn't much travelling by bus till JC and now college, so I see these quite often. If you guys want I'll get better pics the next time.

Yes. fx45 is right. The bus in the photo is an Ashok Leyland one. BEST has only one normal TATA diesel bus, MH 01 L 9115.

A couple of days ago, I saw a unique notice near the instrument panel of MH 01 L 9328 ( serial number 8326). It read as follows:

"Notice: This bus is fitted with six speed gear box"

I guess that the buss must be having 6 forward gears. The shape of gear lever was different than usual.
