re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

Being an owner of the Tigor EV Ziptron, I think this makes perfect sense. In fact, had this been launched first I probably would have bought this instead of the Tigor.
I won’t be surprised if the Tiago EV comes with a similar range to the Tigor EV, considering you shave off a few kgs off the weight of the Tigor, especially if they decide to use the same battery pack of the Tigor which also makes complete sense as both cars are on the same platform. Maybe the battery pack might have a lower density to differentiate it but I believe that Tata might give more bang for the buck by pushing the same battery with a slightly ‘detuned’ motor. This will give good performance with great range.
The Tigor had a couple of issues with the AC, compressor and fan which recently was resolved. Other than that it’s a fun to drive car which with a light foot gives 260-270 km range and with a fun to drive style (quick acceleration, non constant speeds) still gives a range of 220-230.
I will probably put up an ownership review soon with my ‘open’ charging setup as well.

re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

Has anyone spoken to a cabbie driving the Xpress-T and asked about the mileage?

What is the real world range of the 41hp motor?

I saw this video, the drivers say it runs around 150 km in a single charge, which is decent enough for a daily office run.

Then the other guy says, if they use the home charger, the range is around 180kms.

re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

Well I am looking forward to the Tiago EV as well. Like others have mentioned, it will be the perfect city car / second car in the family.
Since very little info is available at the moment, I wanted to go ahead with the assumption that TML will just retrofit Tigor EV setup in this car.
This is one point on which TML has a leg up on Mahindra. M&M acquired Reva very early to get the technology however they didn’t have a small vehicle platform to use it effectively and do numbers. TML has this advantage in the form of multiple small platforms. Imagine Altroz EV with Nexon setup or Punch EV.

Lo and Behold, one of the Youtubers Gagan just released Tigor EV review.

Now if these assumptions are true then my points would be the following:
1. The Tiago platform itself is a Safe and proven platform with Great ride quality etc. Two Airbags by default. Low running costs and easy maintenance.
2. Any range upwards of 180 – 200kms+ on a single charge will be great for most city usages.
3. Key for smaller EVs is home charging. A total, under 10 hours, 10% to 100% charging time on a standard 15 Amps socket will be key.
4. There was a comment made in the video that multiple Fast Charging cannot be done continuously more than 3 or 4 times. So this needs to be kept in mind.
5. What would be the batter performance drop in say 2 years ? My E2O battery degraded already 5% in about 2 to 3 years time.
6. For small EVs, its very important that the car itself is successful on which the EV is based on. For comparison, my last EV was Mahindra E2O and due to its limited sales, support was always a challenge. Atleast Tiago is a fairly successful car in its own right so expecting services, support spares availability etc to be of less concern.
External accessories should also be the same.
7. Interior quality, Fit and finish is essential. Long term how the car would hold is always a concern with new introductions but both ICE versions of Tiago and Tigor have been around. There are positives and negatives for the same but atleast datapoints and ownership reviews are available in the market. If anything, Positives / Negatives of ICE Tiago + EV setup advantages so none of the Engine issues hopefully.

Concerns:
1. Doesn’t look like there are selective regeneration levels or Cruise control etc. I hope ESP is there as a must along with ABS and EBD.
2. TML services are still a hit or miss. The service centers are running full capacity and that’s is a critical part of the EV support. TML is not scaling up the service capacity in keeping with sales. Don’t believe me, call up your nearest TASS and ask for a service slot for Hexa. May be other fast moving vehicles is better like Nexon.
3. The service executives challenge has always been electronics. Even on simple ICEs, the electronic problems have always kept them guessing. May god help on pure EV. I would not single out only TML here, Mahindra and others are in the same boat. Specialized and skilled service folks will be needed.
I would love to hear real feedback from any of the existing Nexon EV owners on their service experience so far.

In general, price will be key here and I am sure TML is looking at another 500+ monthly sales numbers easily in this segment. This should also give confidence to other players like Maruti to speed up WagonR EV.

Tiago EV would be a perfect and a great commuter car for everyday travel within the city. Even if th range will be 200 on a single charge will be more than enough.

If the Tigor is any indication then 220-250 kms real world range is easily possible.

Again Tigor EV 10-100% on home charging takes 8.5 hours. Improved by 20 minutes after a recent update.

It’s not that it cannot be done. It of course can be done but is not recommended as cell balancing happens on slow charge after 95%. This improves battery life. So if you are on a trip and fast charge 6 times won’t really affect much esp. if it is not a regular occurrence.

Battery degradation expected after 3500 cycles is about 5%-7%. Got this from a friend at Tata.

True that. Spares are easily available for all body parts.

Biggest positive is the lack of NVH due to the electric motor. Super silent, tyre noise on certain road surfaces is there though.

Most SC have a separate EV service bay. In Pune for example Rudra motors has a dedicated EV facility at Viman Nagar. The advantage for them is turn around time. It takes 20 minutes to service the car! (30 minutes when transaxle oil is changed)

Specialised Service advisors and team for EV is there. For key issues a Tata trained person comes directly (software update, part update).

Will it be okay if a Tigor EV owner answers?
For me personally service experience has been good. On our owners group most have had positive experience with the service center - yes sometimes car has to be left for longer if there is a major issue but that’s true of any car. (ICE Or EV)

If they keep the pricing to 11.XX lakhs it will surely be a great sales success

Tiago with its mass appeal and hopefully sub 10 lakh cost will help in faster adoption.
Yes, the production capacity wont be much more than that. Currently, only Tata is "making" the car here. Even Tata imports the batteries and the motor which are the core components. The source of these components is usually China which is currently servicing most of the world's EV market. Production capacity is very limited and that is a fact.

Infact I dont see why Tata is bothering with this Tiago EV. It will make a lot more sense to take whatever batteries and motors they get and put it into a top trim Nexon. Tiago EV will also not be as cheap as people think it will be. I predict it will be in the range of 11-12L OTR.

re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

@lina the Tiago at 12 L OtR will be the cheapest EV with a range of about 150 to 160 kms. This is an ideal car for the city and will give a run for the money to other ICE cars. Tata’s will only expand their market share and reduce fixed costs as rest of the body shell etc is common. Not everyone can afford a 18 L NEV or XUV400. I would have bought it in an instant over the NEV which I have now. Next in line will be the Altroz EV. Very smart mlve by the Tatas I would say

Exactly!!! Tiago will fit for my Nano replacement too.

My need is more for office commute and within City.

Keen to look at the features. Wish they can take Nexon EVMAX feature set atleast and keep a smaller battery.

Also, keen to see the pricing strategy.

Tigor EV onroad in Bangalore is around 12 Lakhs and it is comfortably giving my brother in law a range of over 200 for his office commute.

I am expecting Tiago price to undercut Tigor. May well be available at or under 10L OTR.

re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

I am equally excited by this launch as many in the forum are, but one point where everyone gets disappointed is pricing. There is an expectation of 8-10 L pricing, it seems unlikely looking at the price differential between the ICE tigor or nexon with the electric ones, the difference is almost 4lks between the 2. Maybe Tiago being a little smaller needs fewer batteries to churn out 200km range, but overall i feel the pricing starts at 9.99lks for Tiago XE EV. Anything lower than that should not be expected as an ice Alto costs around 6lks, so expecting a much better car in an EV avatar at 8lks is pure foolishness.

I have been using a low speed electric scooter for last 3 months, overall i am impressed with this whole electric concept & 95% chances are my next car would be an EV.

There is no point cribbing about range & price at the same time, EVs are an extremely profitable space & with no competition do not expect prices to come down in the near future. The hybrid play by Toyota has only strengthened EV players thus not expecting prices to come down any time soon.

Finally!!! all the Indicas will be replaced if this is less than 10l.

I was waiting for this however this has all the signs of being the #1 yellow(Green) plate car

re: Tata Motors announces Tiago EV. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 8.49 lakh; offers 315 km range

Having had the Tigor EV for a month now, I can confirm on the fact that it is the ideal size for city use, the Tiago will definitely be better than that. Also, the electric motor in one full sweep, removes the worst part of the Tiago/ Tigor - its underpowered, inefficient and noisy petrol engine and gearbox ( can vouch for this having owned both petrol Tigor and Tiago amt).

Now you can really get to enjoy the smooth gliding experience, no gearchanges ( the throttle is extremely well calibrated). In fact for city driving, i feel it even beats the best automatics since there are no gears at all, just glides along. Plus sport mode is really fun !

Extras added
- Elegant cord 2D mats
- Frameless wipers
- Steering wrap
- Hella Chrome trumpet horns

MISSING ITEMS
- Second remote keyless key. Reason cited is chip shortage. NO COMMUNICATION/ASSURANCE as to when/ IF I will ever receive the key

Now, inevitably being a Tata, worse followed by the bad and the good

SAFETY HAZARDS:

- Simple things like push/ pull windshield wash/ wipe. The wiper activates a long time AFTER the water is sprayed, leaving you blind and almost thinking the control is broken ! This is a safety hazard on highways and the problem WAS NOT PRESENT IN MY EARLIER TIGOR !
- Keyless entry sensor is useless sometimes, as it needs truck like force to engage and half the time, I end up locking with the remote key. Worst part is, if it doesn't lock it activates the horn 8 times and creates quite a racket for passers by ( made even worse by the fact that I have upgraded the stock horns to Hella Chrome trumpets)
- No Park mode meaning you have to be vigilant and engage the handbrake every time to get out. Always in the back of your mind as to whether you accidentally forgot to engage the parking brake. MUST convey this to any parking valet if you hand over the car to them, which I don't obviously as never trust valets
- Rear door design as it protrudes out a long way and you should be careful to move your kids out of the way before opening the rear door, else it will be a straight hit on their head
- Again, on the subject of head, DON'T hit your head on the trunk latch when taking out the charger. It really gives a solid whack!

The Negatives

- There is a creaking sound from the boot area when going on rough roads ( sprayed WD40 on the boot hinges but no effect)
- An irritating rattle from the driver's side seat belt area ( need to take it to the service center, which I always loathe)
- Auto ac needs constant adjustment to keep the temperature you need ( on hot days you need to lower it by 1 degree every 30 mins, worst is you don't know what temperature you are in as the display is hidden in the touchscreen
- Stiff ride on the super potholed roads of Trivandrum. The solution is to slow down to a crawl and then its typical tata cushy cushy
- Hopeless rubber beadings and fit and finish in some areas which really dont do justice for a 14 lakh plus car
- Rollback on steep slopes, unless you are really quick with the accelerator or use the handbrake
- Losses 2 to 3 psi tire pressure every 2 weeks ( on account of the weight and road pounding perhaps)
-Z-connect App not working. Have raised complaint with Tata Motors helpline and SLA is 2 to 3 working days for resolution

Now the POSITIVES-

- Silent powertrain lets you really enjoy the solid build of the car. Feels like you really are driving around in a safe
- Compact size and maneuverability
- Range:

Have covered close to 600 kms now with the car. Now I have never driven in an eco friendly manner. My go fast mode ( With Ac set at 24 degree all the time, 10 times use of S mode and a 60 km run on the by pass plus rest in city), you can expect a range of 130 kms . Mind you this is the worst and the battery charge was 100 to 18 % before i plugged it again.

In sensible mode, with ac on and reasonably swift progress you can get 170 kms in the city ( 100 to 20% drop). Didn't go below 20 % much as car has to run 60 kms plus a day and don't want to be stranded
- My driver who with his gentle Zen like driving can squeeze 200kms ( 100 to 20%) with ac ( 80% drive is on the highway)

OTHER POINTS:
- Don't expect royal dealership treatment ( at least in my case) when you go to buy this car. The experience I had was just like buying an autorickshaw. Remember, product only counts. Only plus with the dealer is they don't push for accessories or insurance ( unlike Maruti).Yet to receive refund of 13 K even after a month of delivery ( delay reason have been a to z and now its aa, ab reasons). Brother also yet to get his booking refund of 5k for the Nexon after 1.5 months
- Didn't consider Nexon as it is impossible for my kids and mother ( knee and joint issues) to climb into the back seat past the extra wide rear door sills and also the height
- The charger installation is neat and the whole product looks sturdy and well engineered
- The radiator fan does a 5 second run every time you open any of the doors/ trunk. You have to learn to live with it. Maybe part of pre-diagnostic checks
- Getting the long charger cable back into its pouch calls for some huff puff ( especially for OCD type people like me who just don't want to throw it in the boot). And 9/10 times you will end up banging your head on the trunk latch while doing so
- Don't know if its my case, but some folks just don't like them being overtaken ( especially in S mode where you blitz past them) by an EV. They honk and try aggressive overtakes to prove that their cars are obviously superior to my milk float !

CONCLUSION:
-Since its a new technology and in fact a new experience for the family in the EV space, we are keeping the Celerio also as back up for 6 to 12 months till the transition to EV is smooth and understandable. ( will be changing over to Tiago EV after that)
-Its a zero stress car to drive in the city with smooth controls, very light steering and good maneuverability plus the safety feel.
- Will whole heartedly recommend Tiago/ Tigor to anyone as a SECOND car with planned running < 200 kms in city/ highway limits.

I did ask a Blu Smart cabbie on my way from the Airport.

Yes same figures of 150 KM with AC and around 180 without AC were quoted to me. The Xpress-T has a lower capacity battery btw.

On a side note: Looks like Blu Smart cabs will replace OLA/UBERS in NCR soon.. I love its service as the Cabbies don't refuse the ride and also since they are just drivers, they appear quite relaxed in their behavior and attitude.
