Thanks. Not really mexican but yes very colorful. The oldest building in the university.

Ok....now I'm confused.
I thought smallest aperture would give the best results for landscapes. or was I mistaken? the smaller aperture and relatively lower ISO setting meant a long exposure time, which required a tripod. all I had with me at that time was a small portable tripod which staggers under the weight of the canon. so, I decided to try handheld, which didnt work.

using the auto settings, I was able to expose the scene for a lot less longer, so, was able to get a relatively sharper image while shooting handheld. but auto lets me shoot only in JPEG.

@samurai-the 2nd pic is straight from the camera, completely unprocessed JPEG

please tell me what I should have done.please:
thanks guys.

As f number increases, the dof increases. So when you want everything from foreground to background to be in focus (as in land scape), you choose a higher f number or smallest aperture possible. But at the same time, if you choose very high f number, it might introduce diffraction.

Personally I think, f22 is not a bad choice, if you had had a tripod.

@rippergeo- I suggest you take a look at this video for better understanding of what you need to keep in mind
while shooting landscapes.

But why go for F22!? It will cause softness of picture and actually spoil results
In a landscape you usually want things from about 3-4 meters away to infinity out of focus
For example F9 is a very sharp area for Canon kit lens(18-55mm).
Suppose I focus on an object 4 meters away at 18mm F9, Online Depth of Field Calculator tells me everything from 1.92 meters to infinity will be in focus

The hyperforcal distance is 1.92 meters.
Which means that if I focus at 2 meters or so, I will get focus upto infinity.

With F22 hyperfocal distance is 0.77meters, so if I focus at 77cm everything from 77cm to infinity is in focus. Now for a landscape, if everything after 2-3 meters is in focus, thats good enough!
No need to go to such apertures.

Moreover I could not understand whats RAW or JPEG got to do with it?

thanks for that tifosi.

I did have a tripod, but its old and falling to bits.

I'm sure you're right.that particular image I put up is nowhere as sharp as the real scene was. also the really small aperture will force longer exposures, making a tripod absolutely essential.

I'll keep that in mind, that is very valuable info.

I understood after my first aperture priority attempt of that scene, that I was making a mess of things.
so I switched to automatic landscape mode to capture the scene. the auto mode set the F number much lower/increased aperture, and therefore decreased the exposure duration and let me squeeze off a few handheld shots that were relatively less blurred.
unfortunately, canon does not let me shoot RAW images in auto mode. only JPEG.

this particular scene and lighting lasted less than a minute, and I was desperate to get it. there was no time to experiment with settings. so switched to auto knowing that the camera would make up for my lack of knowledge.

here's a daytime shot from this morning's trip to kollam and back. this time i think I got the settings right. but the landscape is nowhere as dramatic as last evening's sky.

You will never need more than F/16 for any kind of DOF. I would go beyond F/16 only to cut down excess light in very sunny situation, that too not happily.

If you know of a camera that creates unprocessed JPEG, let me know. I am sure purists will stand in line to buy it.lol:

Camera processed Raw => Camera JPEG (using default processing logic)

Unprocessed JPEG is an oxymoron.

I knew some nitpicker would come back at me for that "unprocessed JPEG" statement.
I meant, I have'nt post processed it. of course you knew that didnt you?:D

You have post-processed it moment you set the camera to JPEG output. That's the first thing to understand before becoming a raw-shooter.:) You are becoming a raw shooter because you want to custom PP each image instead of letting the camera use it's cookie-cutter PP logic.

Images of the Lily flowers that blossoms in our house every monsoon. The flowers emit an excellent smell which I hope I had some software to share with all viewers here. It beats even the best French perfumes I am sure!

Now this is real pure as it gets, untouched by camera processing engine too.:)

Yesterday shot at endpoint while standing with Riju and gang, had less than 2 seconds to spot and shoot this guy. Trap shooting with E3.:D

Insane bokeh, the lower body is OOF even at F/6.3 200mm (400mm EFL).
