Caught this the other day - hand held and on the fly ..

They were very skittish - they were flying all over the place like that!!

I really need to get used to the DoF - its soooo narrow!! (- just look at the rope )

Just tried to play around with the macro, ISO settings in my Canon. Got these pictures.

Processed using Adobe to take the colors of the leaves.

Question: When I switch to macro, i see that the zoom is set to 1X. So, is that the only difference? If so, can I get the same results when I zoom manually to 1x?

Mjothi,

Not really. When you set a Point&Shoot (P&S) camera to macro mode -- if i am not mistaken it moves a lens element in order to enable the camera to focus at much closer ranges (some cameras can even focus at 0cm! ie the flower could be touching the lens and would be in focus!).
Due to this moved lens element, the other lens elements have to be locked in place -- which happens at "1x".

Its not the same as being at 1x, since when marco is off the lens element hasnt been moved to allow much closer focussing distances.

The lens was the EF 70-300 IS @ 300mm, f5.6, Shutter speed 1/20.

The shot was handheld. A tripod would have yielded better results.

@redrage- I meant that the 1st pic is especially nice. I have tried photographing the same species of flower, and it did not look as good as yours. :)

It does clears some doubt. One more :) I have seen that some pictures when taken in MACRO mode (not in mine, but seen in one of my friends) the subject is fully focused and the background is blurred (out-of-focus?). I am trying for such, but could not get. What are those? Can you?

you are referring to the Depth of Field, which defines what objects are in focus and what are not.

If you use the macro mode the objects very close to the lens - say less than 1ft are in focus and the rest is out of focus. In a P&S camera, put it to the wide-st setting for the lens, move close to the object focus on the object and shoot. the distance at which you can shoot will vary depending on your lens.

e.g in my coolpix 5000, in wide mode, the min distance i can focus an object is 1ft. and in Tele mode, 2.5 ft. If i try to go less than this, the objects at 1ft /2.5ft are in focus, instead of the main subject.
