How to capture Diwali & Fireworks?

Folks,

Need your ideas and thoughts on capturing Diwali. I've realized that unless well set, the 500D can massively let me down (wrong focus points/white balance etc). Hence, i want to make sure I don't make a fool of myself.

So want your ideas on:
a. Fireworks - the prescription is Aperture around f/8, Shutter speed : ~30 seconds and hence a tripod is a must.

Wider focal lengths are preferred.

b. People - think candid shots of people playing with fuljhadis/crackers etc

Want to discuss here because TBHP has a very kickass set of photographers even though I know we're not a photography forum here! And we're addicted to TBHP!

all - thanks in advance

Have to agree here, fstops anything in range of f/8 will give good exposure.
But the shutter speed seems to be a bit long to capture fireworks photo.
Bring it down around 5-10 secs.
Proper ISO settings, below 1so200 will give very less noise images.
Make sure you adjust the EV properly.
As always tripod is a must.

As you've said a tripod is a must. You can try setting the focus to infinity for consistency..another tip is to use the bulb mode and covering the lens in between the fireworks flashes.. that way you can get multiple fireworks in one shot. A remote shutter release also comes in handy.

Finally, remember not to overexpose

Me thinks even a continous shooting mode would also help if the exposure is set to 5 Secs or less to capture repeated firework display

The fireworks thread is merged since we are keeping only 3 threads on photography. We are still an automobile forum.

Meanwhile, there are two kinds of fireworks photography. Almost all fireworks tips on the Internet refer to long distance photography of huge fireworks display. And it is pretty easy too. The other kind is the personal fireworks in your home or street. Now that is lot more difficult. Focusing and exposing becomes a real nightmare.

Try to capture a rocket or a flower pot.

TG,
True life in the photograph, good left to right composition of the seagull and white standing against the dark background. Expected from you.

PiranaBoy,
Nice shot of the vulture, if you don't mind, had it been in potriat format, I think it would turn out better.

My Bird shot.
