with Minolta 70-210mm @210mm, f/6.3, 1/30s, ISO200, handheld

Tried my first moon photography today with 55-250 lens. Unfortunately mine is only a 1100d and does not have a mirror lock up. Had a gamut of clicks under various ISO and settings, with a tripod.

I am just a noob and its very hard. Couldnt find myself on the right side of things

The best shots i could all get were these

F11/ -3 Step EV/ @250mm/ Partial metering/ Exposure time 1/2 a sec/ISO 200





F8/-1 step EV/ @250mm/ Partial metering/ 0.6sec exposure time/ ISO 400



Can someone help me with photographing the moon. What are the right settings? when is the right time to shoot the moon? Are there any other techniques involved?

Gurus comments and help please

All shots taken from 18-105mm kit lens. Wish I had a 70-200 f/2.8 :-(

Why would you need a telephoto for a flower show? Didn't the 18-105 suffice?

Shot during the recent Trilok Gurtu concert at UB City, Bangalore.

Sachin, some flowers are a little far away from the rope. You will need more zoom if you wish to capture just one or two flowers in your photo. Probably a combo of 35mm f/1.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 would have been ideal. 35 for the very near ones and 70-200 for the far ones.

One usual mistake that you seem to have done too is thinking that at night you need more light (higher aperture, slow speed etc). While it is dark at night, you are photographing a light source. you can increase the speed to a comfortable level. also, moon is a moving target, not to mention atmospherical turbulence, especially when you use a long focal length. So stick to a high shutter speed. I personally think you will get the best shot when the moon is straight up in the sky, not close to horizon.

Photographing the moon is easier than most of us think, we don't even need a tripod if the moon is really bright. Typical setting for a bright moon would be something like 1/640s, f/8, ISO200.


While flowers good subjects to shoot, it is very difficult to produce a 'wow' factor in the shots taken - just my opinion. Most of us just point the camera and shoot them without thinking about the background & composition.

And it will be good if you have a telephoto to shoot flowers - not because some flowers are far away, but it can be used for creating a much better & smooth bokeh in the background than a kit lens. Have a look at my Chameleon shot in this page - the subject was just within 2 meters of reach but I used a 210mm lens.

Looks like you are on a shooting spree, have you crossed 5000 with the new body ?

This time I skipped it due to bad health. If I have to attend a flower show, I would take only my macro lens with me, if I did not have one, the 50mm prime would be the second pick. People also get the cheaper reverse adapter ring to convert a 50mm to a killer macro lens. Changing lenses in the crowd is a sensor-killer !

This is not the best from that lot for sure :) Never attended a concert with camera, hope to get a chance soon !

My experiments with available light continues:

No it is just about 2600 but me thinks it is still very high :) More than 500 of the 2.6k are two events covered..
Interesting thing is that the shutter count of my old body at the time I sold it was only 13K!

I used Shutter Speed Priority Mode, Spot Metering, Exposure -0.7 for this handheld shot(posted earlier too). Since i was shooting handheld and had to keep shutter speed high to avoid shake, i did not have much choice over Aperture. This was my first attempt to click moon.

That was too good a first attempt. what lens did you use? 70-300 or 400 ?. ill try these tips today and see how it comes
