One of the world's largest Ocean Liner Queen Mary II recently visited Melbourne Port. A B&W shot of the ship with some grains added in PP to create old school look. There was no direct access to the port so didnt get the proper angle to shoot the beauty.

Been a while since I posted anything here. Got back to Bangalore and had some time on my hand, so processed a few old ones. Here are couple of them.

EDIT: Somehow, both seem to have some form of tilt that I am unable to correct.

Welcome back Hellwrath! Yeah there is minor tilt but loved the first one. Is that the Casino in Las Vegas?

Last night I tried my hands on shooting traffic trails but was not satisfied with end results. Though I was able to capture trails but none of the shot was crystal clear or with sharp background.

I tried all possible exposure and f stop settings but got best results with f/11 and 8 sec with iso 100.

I want to know why I am not able to get expected results?

Is this because of the camera - D3100 capable of this much only?

Or

because I am not using tripod, all shots handheld?

8 second exposure shot without Tripod?? Getting a sharp shot is then next to impossible!!

You got it absolutely right Sir! Without a tripod, when the exposure is for a long time, even the minutest shake will result in a blurred picture. If you don't have a tripod, placing your camera on some solid surface which will ensure absolute motion arrest of your camera would give a good result too

Even the ones with super steady hands need Tripod for slow shutter speeds. The slowest i use for handheld is 1/15sec @ 18mm, as focal length increases the shutter speed needs to be increased accordingly to keep the shots steady.

Hey, even I am seeing these flock of birds from past few days near my lab building! They seem to be Brahminy Mynah. My Lab is in Chamarajpet. Were did you snap them?

This is shot near my home in Electronic City where we have a lake surrounding the place. Not sure if its a Mynah, I though they are some tiny sparrows. May be worth checking.

That depends on the person and the type of shot I guess.

Landscape etc - tripod helps a lot. Wildlife - sometimes you don't have the luxury of a tripod or a beanbag. I have taken shots b/w 200mm - 300mm on my 70-300mm lens with VRII at 1/20 and 1/30 secs, and they come come out alright. In fact, even 1/5 sec sometimes comes out alright if you are firing a burst and bracing the camera/yourself against something.

Just like shooting.

Shooting at 1/5sec handheld with a telephoto lens i don't think consistently good shots are possible, no matter how capable the IS/VR is. Please share if you have some good sharp shots at this shutter speed using a telephoto lens. With a telephoto lens, i'd prefer pumping the ISO sensitivity rather than dropping the shutter speed so low.

Even i use a slightly cheaper 55-300 lens with VRII, see the shots in my Ranthambhore thread.
