Re: Rants on Bangalore's traffic situation

Note: A 'traffic' related question but on a different 'highway'.

Airtel users in Bangalore, are you experiencing lower than usual network speeds on your Airtel connections over the last week? Been facing significantly slower speeds both at my office and home (when not on wifi).

Not just network speed, I have been facing frequent call drops/poor reception as well, especially when I am at home. This has been the case since the past 3-4 months but wasn't the case earlier.

On the other hand, the Airtel fiber connection at home has been pretty reliable so far.

Thanks - I was wondering if this was only a issue for me. I noticed the issue being there for weeks, but it's gone worse over the last week for sure.

My Airtel fiber connection at my previous location was fantastic. Unfortunately Airtel doesn't have fiber in my current home and the 'broadband' connection is spotty, but thankfully better than the mobile network.

Waiting to shift to BSNL which only has the fiber network setup in my area/apartments apparently.

Thanks guys. Will be raising a complaint later today - a decade ago, when I was working in this industry, the mobile network firms had a strong focus on resolving network issues due to the competition (we had ~10 operators back then). No idea if they still do so but will give it a try.

@Ashis - my office is close to your home so same area issues.

Am seriously fed up with Airtel network. Bangalore folks - any of you using Jio or BSNL in the city? How's the network coverage across town over time?

Airtel in Bangalore is really really poor.
Although in Delhi and its adjoining areas (the smaller cities around Delhi) it was fine. I used to get very good speeds there when I was there few months back. But here in Bangalore its just atrociously bad. You have to scramble for a WiFi connection somewhere.

As far as I know, BSNL does not have a 4G network deployed yet. So if that matters to you, you might want to drop them.

I don't use Vi, but I have one SIM each on Airtel and Jio. My experience is that both work reasonably well in most areas of the city that I frequent (the big easterly half of the city from Hebbal till Silk Board stretching to Horemavu, Whitefield and Sarjapur). There are specific locations in the HAL airport / defence area where speculation is that signal jammers are used and therefore service quality goes down drastically.

Also, Airtel is expected to be the first to roll out 5G services in India?

Airtel is really poor now a days in Bangalore, though they keep sending messages that they have improved coverage in your area. Am waiting for BSNL 4G to be operational.

Jio is marginally better, decent speeds and I can take calls when indoors which is not possible with Airtel where I live.

BTW, this is around Phoenix Market city and Mahadevpura area.

I have been an Airtel customer for a decade across multiple cities (Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jamshedpur, Chennai & now Bangalore). First city where the network has been consistently poor (for last 2 months) across multiple locations (Bellandur, Ashok Nagar).

Anyway, thanks for the feedback guys.

My ten year old Airtel line is doing fine. You seem to have some local issue maybe due to road digging or so. Currently my VDSL broadband is belting out 80MBPS. About call drops I'm sure since I use wifi calling at home and work.

I recently migrated from Jio to BSNL and I regret it. I find BSNL is not having proper coverage in Bangalore. It may have coverage in Ladakh or remote regions, but within city limits, it is a useless network.

You can try Jio. It's either Airtel or Jio.

I use all 3 - dont ask me the details. Airtel works most of the time, but some connectivity issues in our apt which is adjacent to a large "mini-forest". But even otherwise, there are occasional complaints about loss of signal when one of us is able to hear the other.

Jio is not used that much, but it generally works.

BSNL. What Can I say ? They are still on 3G. Yes. I have confirmed this with my friend, a BSNL engineer. He said they want to move directly to 5G, post which things will change. Till then, I have seen that their coverage is fine in the city, but near the far south end of Bangalore South taluk I dont even get the 3G data connectivity. And this is not even in the interiors, but in stone's throw from Kanakapura road itself. (Airtel and Jio are still fine in that area).

Ninja - It is possible that Airtel coverage in your area is not good. Check around with people there if Jio or Voda works better.

Have decided to stick with Airtel. Unfortunately it is horrible near my office (Bellandur), a point reconfirmed with @ashis89 and others living in that area, but don't see a clear alternative. Thankfully it's relatively better at my home however there are days when the network coverage suddenly drops for a few hours and then goes back to normal.

On the plus side, we are moving from Airtel broadband (fiber not available in our area/building) to BSNL fiber so atleast we have some choice there.

Actually in the Bellandur area Airtel is better when compared to Jio and Vodafone. I had to port from Vodafone to Airtel just to get some level of network in the office area. Had first tried a Jio SIM which also was equally bad.

If you have the option of connecting mobile to an office wifi network, then using wifi calling ( assuming phone supports) will solve the problem atleast in the office premises.

I stay in Bellandur and my office is also nearby. No issues with Airtel at both home and office. You could maybe try with a different phone or getting the SIM replaced.
