SPARKled, thanks for your note and explanation. I did get to read a few reviews on the 5D and instantly realised this is a PRO cam and extremely pricey too, for someone below an amateur level [that would be me].

I think I'm going to stick to my decision to purchase the 550D.

Hi Lazy [honest handle, eh?] lol,

Wonderful. I'm eyeing the same model for purchase and as of today, it costs 45K+ with B&W. We [members from the joint purchase] will be going on same days/different days for the payment and pick-up but I'm sure to go on a Saturday/Sunday. Will keep you posted on the final deal that Unni/Shaju and I are working on, between RK PhotoGuide and Foto Circle.

Cheers.

Edit: To Shaju's response...
Man, you beat me to it.. Btw, I thought you had advised Abbas to procure his Canon SX20 IS from the US.. Is he preferring to purchase it from here and having it shipped??

Also, Unnit told me you've committed to the Sigma 17-70mm lens to RK.. So I'll get a best quote from Jayesh for everything except that??

We didnt hear anything from Abbas after that discussion, so we have no idea until he responds. I havent given any commitment to anyone, because one who gives the best for us is the king. These guys know each other being in the same business, so lets see who wants a group deal !

I havent spoken to Jayesh yet, only problem is we neither can speak to him over the phone (he speaks only max 30 seconds) nor speak to him at his shop (as its always crowded). But we should make him understand its a 200k+ deal. May be he will cross that '30 second rule' of his mobile.

Shaju,

Good to have spoken with you. Even greater that I managed to keep Jayesh on phone for more than 30 seconds..

I told him the equipment we have in list for purchase and he immediately asked me to wait for at least till 19th and said something that sounded to me like he can give the EOS 550D at a better price [I am sure I didn't let my ear hear that, I think he said something very close to that statement, lol]..

He also said he does not have 500D stock and that's when I mentioned I have a group purchase deal that's worth more than about 1.5L and if he can work some magic into his price, we are all interested in picking up the gear from HIM [that's when our call exceeded the 30 seconds rule]. He asked me to contact him after 19th for the availability and prices. I told him I'll try to visit him on one of the Saturday and put forth the requirement and he welcomed that.

So I'll probably go along with Unni on 17th (or) 24th to Balepet and represent the gang, put forth our equipment list and try to push him for THE best price.. Until then, request all the members to be a bit patient with us please. Anyone who is in urgent need of their equipment can visit Jayesh directly as I think our group order may take until the 24th [that weekend] to finalize everything.

Except the sigma 17-70 OS HSM lens, everything else is available with RK right now, but his quote may not be matching to what Jayesh might give. As of now, we dont have any commitments to either of them, but I have given a hint to RK that we are cross checking every bargain available in the market here, so lets see.

@shaju, are the prices mentioned by you for the 500D and 550D, with warranty or not? Now that Jayesh is an authorized dealer of canon, I doubt if he would give you without warranty stuff. Confirm this if some people want to buy without warranty.

Also, could you check if the 10% discount coupons (for lenses) that you get with canon edge membership would be applicable over his discounted quote?
I got a quote of 12k+ for the 55-250 from Jayesh.

So, 4 DSLR body kits are confirmed.

What I quoted as reference is with B&W. If you are picking up a Canon body, its better to pay that meagre difference (max 2k from a grey quote) and get all the priveleges of a canon edge member (camera bag, time to time discounts, discount coupons etc offered to canon members). I dont find similar catch on Nikon products.

Wait for the weekend, some of us will be visiting the shops personally and confirming the final price and freebies. Meanwhile, if anyone else wants to be part of the group purchase, kindly confirm it here. But do your homework by cross checking different online retailers and shops before committing to the group pricing, later there is no point complaining about the deal. None of us have any commercial intentions in the same, so please dont misinterpret it as a game behind the curtains. Do I have time for all that ? No way.

Jaguar, the price I'd quoted for 550D is 45+ was with warranty and the 18-55 kit lens. Jayesh confirmed this twice for me already.

Yes, I strongly recommend purchasing with B&W too since the difference between that and grey is far too thin and you don't save much [atleast on the EOS 500D and 550D]. But buying with B&W gives you a cam bag, a photography book, some discount coupons for lenses & accessories, coupons for free lens and sensor cleaning and invites to a free and paid* canon training sessions. The benefits are worth it.

Good you put this down in print, Shaju. Members should understand we are only trying to get a good deal for everyone but nothing is guaranteed. The prices quoted by some of these authorised dealers are already extremely competitive, so please don't expect miracle discounts. JJMehta is one of the reputed and famous online retailer of Canon/Nikon products and they sell with a discount on the manufacturer recommend MRP. You can check there and see the price quoted by Foto Circle and RK PhotoGuide already way lower than JJM's price. So, that's that.

So yes, if you would like to ask around on your own too, you're welcome and we recommend that too.. But as a part of the group purchase, we will try our best to squeeze and get the maximum for ALL of us.. No one, will make a penny out of this exercise or make any personal gains, like Shaju already has clearly mentioned.

Since Jayesh from FotoCircle has asked us to contact him after 19th for better/exact on-date prices, member Unni.AK and I have decided to visit him personally on 24th April. Just an FYI for people to know the approximate time by when we will close the deal [same day or +2 days].

@ Hurrycane: Thanks for your confirmation of your equipment.

@ Others who have expressed interest: Can I please request you make a confirmed commitment of your purchase and equipment by the 19th of this month? That's when I'll speak with Jayesh again and we'll need exact equipment to understand the total purchase value, with which we can bargain better, and also ask him to ready stocks. Thanks for understanding.

Regards,
aK

Ajay, sorry I didnt notice your SMS yesterday, I normally ignore most beeps on phone while working !

My lens specification is here: Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 DC OS MACRO HSM for Nikon mount. Its US$ 450. The non-OS version is there in the market for a long time, but the OS was launched only in Jan 2010. Shipping has started to India so it should be available at important dealers within few days.

This weekend I went to the Canon Image Lounge in Mumbai. Tried the 50mm prime lenses below
1. F1.2 L series costing 79K - Too bad that my Dad is not a "Sheikh"
2. F1.4 costing about 23/29K
3. F1.8 cosing 6k.
I tried taking pics w/ shutter speed of 1/1000 for each lens indoors, and the results were amazing. I also tried same settings for F3.5 (largest aperatue for my 18-55 Kit lens) and the result was - Black. I have fallen in love with the 6K F1.8 lens.
I am three weeks old DSLR user (1000D) and I think i cannot live without the lens already. (For low light pics. I am also concerned about the shallow depth of field because of the High 'F')

How many of use the 50MM prime lens? whats the use? and how often does is really get used? (I need to justify the expense to myself ) I also have 70-300MM III USM lens.

Man that is one hell of a deal. I picked up the 500D with 18-55 kit for 44k with warranty from Jayesh this Jan. So was confirming if these were grey or warranty prices.

This field is like that. I picked up the Nikon 35mm 1.8G lens just 40 days back, which costed me 14k for a US shipping (Jayesh had offered 14k with B&W at that time). I tried to save through the importing but didnt benefit. Now the same is available for 11.5 with smartshoppers. Clean 2.5k difference in a 40 days time, I could have got some good quality filters if I were to pick it up now.

Everywhere its for 14k only smartshoppers are giving it for 12k. I wonder how !!

Anyways, i'm planning to get one soon. How's your experience with the lens? Its pretty fast, i'm told.
