So Nikon has decided to upgrade the entry-level with its D3100 with a 14.2 Mega Pixel. Features and package seems to be very good. I got the announcement through BH photo as I am subscribed to their news letter Nikon D3100 Features 1080p HD Video with Full-Time Autofocus | Digital Photography insights

Now beginners have one more model to consider. BH pricing here as a package Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm & 9798 - B&H

^Great. The week I bought the D3000, they launch the 3100. Anyways pricing seems to similar considering the 55-200 is Nikkor lens. Major changes seem to be more mp, LiveView and Video. I do not need any of these (hence I did not go for D5000) but if this is available at price of D3000 then I surely made a mistake of not waiting for this launch inspite of all the rumours.

This is complimented by a Vanguard Alta Pro 283 carbon fibre tripod and SBH 30 ball head. Manfrotto was my 1st choice but too expensive for the type of tripod I wanted.

PS - Already have a couple of Nikon lenses so stuck with Nikon though Canon are my next fav brand.

Cheers!
Congratulations. Did you buy them all in Pune? If so from where in Pune?

When the D700 came out I loved its option to be compatible with APS-C (DX) lenses. It is a very nice body.

Given you have the range to 120mm all sown up why not the 100-400VR instead? Price?

Talking about 24-120, Nikon has a new F/4 version out. It's pricey but it is out. Also for DX users there is finally a 55-300VR! (that mates with the 18-55VR and gives the camera some real range).

R2D@ yo do know about nikonians na? I used to use that forum a lot when I was a nikon user (N80).

However I find that I primarily use the kit lens (mostly in the 18-20mm region; though if I could, I would slightly wider also at times). Now I wish to upgrade to a better lens, but cannot spend too much- not much more than Rs. 10-12 k. I have heard that the new kit lens being offered by Canon, the 18-55 IS is a much sharper lens, leagues ahead of its previous avatar.

Does it make sense for me to buy it (also is it available second hand). Or should I just hold and wait till I can afford a proper wide angle. I do not wish to carry more than 2 lens, and I like the flexibility of zooms.
I doubt that the 18-55 IS lens is any different from the non-IS version as far as sharpness/optics go. The current price of the IS lens in the market is 7K which is VFM. In fact Canon should supply the IS lens with all 1000Ds by default.

The 18-55 IS lens is very very different from the 18-55 non IS, and image quality of the 18-55 IS lens is better than the 18-55.
Canon was criticized in most reviews about image quality of the kit lens, esp when compared to the kit lenses with comparable nikon bodies. Hence they reworked the 18-55 IS extensively.
You can look up resolution-aperture charts online to see the difference.

Nikon launched D3100.
Costs around $700 in the US, any idea about the approx. cost here in India, the Nikon India site is silent on the price! My guess, around 40-42k ?

You guys can comment and predict much better comparing the specs etc.

I was almost set for D5000, now this has got me thinking!

Thanks Navin. Yes I have been surfing the Nikonians website since ages but left off a few years ago when my photography hobby went into hiding. It has resurfaced again hence the new purchases....at the cost of a blasting from my better half. Other than the 24-120 VR (which is a decent lens but could be better, very convenient to lug around), the 70-300 AF-S VR II is a beauty for its price.

I have the 50mm F1.4-D and the 28-105mm D from my previous kit...all were used with my F100. 2 expensive lenses on my wish list:

The 70-200 AF-S VR II F2.8 - (my dream lens)
The 80-400 AF-S VR

It will take me years to get these but here's hoping!

Hi guys, need help. Which is a better deal - canon 500d with kit lens, or 1000d with 18-55 IS+ 50mm 1.8? Both should cost approx the same.
Apart from the video, is 500d worth the extra bucks spent over the 1000d? Ready to shell out more if it really does matter.

Are you already using this bag or planning to buy one? Are you looking for reviews? IMO your post is ambiguous with just an Amazon link to a product which wouldn't even be shipped to India.

The 500d has a bigger sensor, live view etc and is not just a 1000d with video support. What are your exact requirements and people will be able to guide better.
The 1000d combo should be cheaper than the 500d kit. I suppose you didn't consider the buy back of the 18-55 Non-IS kit lens as well.

Bigger sensor? Didn't know that.
