Need Help in choosing the Camera

Folks,
Need help here.
My brother is coming from US and I have asked him to get a DSLR camera.
I have shortlisted 2 camera's that are being sold as package with an extra zoom lens of 55-250 mm alongwith a carry bag.
One from Canon is Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1MP for 670USD
Here is the link
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera, Bag and Extra 55-250 Lens

And another from Nikon is Nikon 10.2MP D3000 for 650 USD
The link for which is as under :
Nikon 10.2MP D3000 Digital SLR Camera with Bag and Extra 55-200mm Lens

Guys please advise which one would be better. They both seem to be equals as far as my knowledge about DSLR is considered.
Need help from all the Pro's here.My budget would be limited to 30K give or take 5K.
Also if there is any other good option in the budget, please do recommend.

Hi Fordmanchau,

I had shortlisted almost the same cameras . The price range that you are looking at is also the same price range I was looking at . But I'd like to suggest a better camera . Its the recently launched D3100 and I've checked the prices of the camera in the shops here in Pune and its retailing at about 29000. Its got better features than the d 5000 . Only thing it doesnt have compared to the d5000 is the adjustable lcd screen . You might want to check out the specs of this DSLR before you make a decision . I've decided to buy the D3100 this diwali .

@Fordmanchau, why don't you have a look at the D3100? Seems a lot more VFM than D3000.

Also, Bodies don't have international warranty while the lens does. You might wanna consider the pros and cons of this before putting down your money.

If it is real cheap then just consider the body and the Sigma.
There seems to be nothing special about the other two lenses. The vivitar is a manual focus lens. If you are new to DSLR then you will not like to change the lenses often. You should be good with a lens in 18-anything range.

I would desist the temptation of buying cameras from US. Normally you get a US and not International Warranty. If you travel to US regularly, then it is not a problem, but if you do not, you will be left with an expensive paper weight if the body goes bad (the repairs out of warranty will cost you practically what you paid for it!) In the days of mechanical film cameras there was not much of a problem, as most of the repairs could be carried out in India, with camera bodies full of electronics you have to go to the manufacturers repair shops as components are rarely available to others.

ego4evr, while i may not be qualified enough to speak about DSLR's, it might help the other members to advice you, if you can quote the asking price for all the items put together or even better - price of each item.

As far as my advice, since you are new to DSLR's and D80 seems to be a fairly old (released in 2006) camera, consider something in the mid range like Canons EOS 500,550 or Nikon D3100, 5000 (body + kit lens should be between Rs.30K to Rs.40K) if the price of the D80 you are considering is in the same range.

Thank you very much Gautam, Dry Ice and Aroy for your suggestions.
Looks like D3100 is the better choice for a entry level DSLR Camera.
And no international warranty might be a big issue, if anything goes wrong with the camera.
I was inclined towards it more for the extra 55-250mm lens. But I think I should give it a pass and look for options here in India. Will look out for prices here in Hyderabad and let you guys know.
Thanks, once again, it really helped in dispelling the confusion.

D3000 body sells for 19k at Nikon authorised dealers in India, after the launch of D3100. The default lens will not cost more than 3k. Plus you have 8k left and an indian warranty too.

@Fordmanchau

Only Thailand made Nikon 3100 is available here in India. Difference in terms of Quality and durability between 'Japan make' and 'Thaiwan make' is a big thing to consider.Ask your brother to search online for Japan made N3100.You can get, D3100 for 28K from Banglore.
I was one of the early bird, to have 3100. I have purchased it for 32 K :((

The D3100 is made in Thailand. Period. There is no Made in Japan unit unless it is the pre-production variety.

At this time Nikon manufactures only the D300/300s and the FX pro-sumer & professional models (D700, D3, D3s, D3X) in Japan.

Chimalgi is only a Canon authorised dealer so you'll get only that. Also negotiate hard as they are slightly priced higher than the market.

Good places to get competitive rate for the body:
  1. Reliance Digital
  2. Ezone
  3. Croma
None of the above places will charge you 2% extra if you use your card and are matching the small shop prices.

@Manish: This is what I suggest. Decide on what which body you want to buy and then get the telephoto lens from US. Lens carry international warranty and are cheaper in US than India.

Also for telephoto lens, if you want to go for a lens with VR/IS and are finding Nikkor/Canon lenses expensive, try sigma APO DG OS 70-300mm

@ego4evr: Please let us know the price of the individual items for us to comment further.
