Got a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 (Non VC) as a new year gift.
Paid 16,000 with Bill & warranty - after exchanging my 18-55 IS Lens. Was it a good deal?
Where can I buy Nikon D3100 with kit lens (18-55 VR) online? It is not listed on JJ Mehta. I stay in a Mumbai suburb.

You can easily get it from Ebay.in
Guys, what would be a better choice -
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S : $340
or
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR : $520
Another thing that amuses me is that the 55-300 provides a better range, still its cheaper than the 70-300
The 70-300 lens is supposed to be better of the two. 55-300 is an extension of the 55-200 lens, hence people say whatever problems that used to be there with 55-200 also exists with the 55-300. Both are VR II lenses with 2 ED glass elements, but the focusing is supposed to be faster with the 70-300 lens, it is also supposed to give sharper pictures. 70-300 is an altime favourite amoung the Nikon community (on this side of the price band)
[Edit] - If I am not wrong, 55-300 comes with a plastic mount (or is it so with the 55-200?) where as 70-300 is metal
The 55-300 takes nice, sharp photos, and focuses fast enough if lighting is good. It's easier to lug around if taking a lot of pictures. It is a fine lens for the price.
From what I've read about the 70-300:
The 70-300 is a step up in build quality, focuses faster but you'll feel the weight if you are lugging it around for awhile(Plastic hood mount for 55-300 makes it lighter and cheaper). The 70-300 is an FX lens that is both fully FX and DX functional. The 55-300 is a DX lens, therefore it will cause sizing limitations if used on a FX digital camera.
So it depends on what you are going to use the lens for.
IF YOU FEEL U WILL GO FX IN THE FUTURE, ONLY "IF" then get the 70-300 if not the dx will be better for you

I would prefer the 70-300 AFS VR-II.
I have one of these and have used it quite a bit. For one it is sharp and focusses very quickly. It is not meant for low light shooting but is serious value for money. Nearly every site I have visited recommends this lens. The lens can be used on FX cameras (so no cropped viewfinder as with DX lenses) if and when you choose to upgrade to FX.

What camera do you have and what lenses are you currently using?? And do mention the kind of photography you are interested in.
I own a Nikon D90, I also own a 50mm (1.8D)Prime & 28-55 mm (3.5-4.6 G)
I am looking for a zoom lens primarily to shoot candids, some birds,
A zoom that I can carry for a one off safari.
I came to know of a second hand 70-300 G series lens (non VR, non ED) for 4000\- but I am in a delimma because I will not be able to re-sell this lens when I plan to upgrade. A VR lens of the same spec is costing over 20000 INR.
Any idea on how much this 70-300 G lens would be in the grey market? or any contacts for the same in Hyderabad

The big difference between these two is the sharpness.
VR lens is sharper.
Also i think tt higher zoom range VR will be useful for hand held shots.
Hi All
My 43days old canon 500D's battery stopped working yesterday.i took it to the canon service and they said that battery is not covered under warranty.
After some argument they agreed after calling the HO (delhi). Now the battery has to come from delhi so it might take one or two weeks.
I asked them for a standby battery but they never bothered about it since they claim that battery itself is not covered in warranty.
Now i dont know what all will happen in the next two years:Frustrati
Any idea how much will a new battery cost? i am thinking of buying a spare one
Buy a third party battery. I am using one in my 350D for a long time. There are lots of sellers on ebay.com where you can get this for around 6$(free shipping to India).
If you do not want third party battery, go to Smartshoppers showroom in Chennai, and buy a LP-E5 battery for approx 1200 INR.
If you want to buy from ebay, a genuine battery costs 1500rs approx

as far as I remember...batteries are covered under warranty for 6 months....check your booklet/warranty card again and best of luck
regards

Ah!!! I was about to suggest the same, 70-300 G series!! It can AF with D90!!
If it is in working condition, buy it. (of course, I would prefer to buy only a manual lens if I were to buy a used one!!) When you are buying it at 4000/-, you are worrying about reselling value!! Common, when you want to sell it, sell it for 2k, it will sold!!!
