@asethi, nice bokkeh. Are you using the kit lens?

Thanks! Yes, am using 18-105 kit lens.

Who says younger brothers arent sweet?!

I get a very generous surprise gift from my brother who came visiting on holiday: a Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 carbon fibre tripod and a Manfrotto 468MGRC3 hydrostatic ball head. :D Not really a DSLR related post and a bit off topic. But I was so thrilled I thought of sharing it with you all.

Cheers!

Got the new D90 delivered at my door step, and am loving every bit of it. Here are the couple of first shots:

Congrats asethi! It's a great camera. Welcome to the DSLR family on TBHP. Lots of helpful and knowledgeable people who can help you use it to its limit.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8G Vs. 50mm f/1.8D

YouTube - ‪Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S vs 50mm f/1.8D‬‏

Test sample Nikkor 50/1.8G 50/1.4G 50/1.8D

Compares 50 1.8G against 1.4G and 1.8D.

The 'G' comes out tops in both sharpness wide open and bokeh.
Exactly the kinda lens i've lusted for for long.

Here i come, lil G....

Congrats, have rock steady shots from now on :)

I just placed an ebay order for 2 Yongnuo YN-467 flashes, a Yongnuo RF-602 trigger and 3 receivers ! Entering to the learning chapter = Strobist. It will be fun with the already existing kit (SB-600, reflective umbrella, stand) and the new 'coming soon' items.

Congrats Shaju. :) Honestly, except for the flashes that kind of equipment is overkill for me. I wont even know how to use it properly. :uncontrol

Cheers!

You must be pulling my leg :) Three flashes are just basic according to me (key, side, background etc). Triggers and receivers are just to operate them wireless for more creativity. My first plan was to get an elinchrom or something similar but I thought that limits myself to indoors and a single basic light will cost over 12k. Speed lights open the potential for outdoor experiments, its much lighter and cheaper from third party brands.

shaju,

how much did that setup cost you?

2 Flashes, 1 Trigger and 3 receivers from Yongnuo HK ebay shop around 11k, free shipping. I am very happy considering a single Nikon SB600 is around 12k :D. Luckily I got it as used an year back for much cheaper !

Great, you'll also need three light stands and three umbrellas. where are you planning to pick them up from?

No, I dont need them :) I have one proper CF tripod (with center and horizontal column), a second cheaper tripod (7 years old) and a few months old proper metal light stand with reflective umbrella.

New flashes will be coming with its floor stand & diffusers, so need to see if a 'shoot through' umbrella is actually required or not. You dont need an umbrella for background lighting anyway. Some gel or glass paper will do the work.

Have a good time with the Yn flashes Shaju, they are cheap yet get the job done pretty well most of the time, go for the ~2000mAH Eneloop batteries from Sanyo to power them. The Yn's should have built in optical slaves as well, I am not familiar with the 467, so if in future you want to have more lights :), there may not be any need for extra triggers.

Only using the diffuser is no good if what you are looking for is soft light, shoot through or softbox would be required for that purpose, bigger the better.

Hi All,
I hope this post is relevant here. I am looking to buy my 1st DSLR, i have no idea about them, so far i have been using Canon point and shoot model. But i want to grow up and get some thing that i will surely keep with myself for 10 years at least.

Well i have an eye on the Nikon D5100, Initial research shows its very good buy considering it little more expensive than the 3100, but has better capabilities. Well this is going to be my starting camera that i will use for learning as well, i am not a photographer but take the camera out for occasions only.

Nikon D7000 is over my budget, so what do you guys suggest on 5100?
Also i do not know whats the difference between lenses, is 18-55 lens which comes enough? or should i put more money and get 18-105 that comes with the 7000 model?

i have no idea, and do not understand most of the pro conversations in this forum, so it would be helpful, if you all can also list out some equivalent models that i can look out below 40K.

I don't think the 5100 has the focusing motor.
So, my recommendation would be D90 + kit lens+ 50mm F 1.8D.
