Gigapan.org has more than enough to satisfy the itch ;)

Pretty sure Paris 21gigapixel was from Klauss but not 100% sure.

^^^ The itch has been satisfied long back actually.:D I wanted to see a sample from a person with whom I can relate to(fellow BHPian). All those who have posted on Gigapan.org are unknown to me.

Alright, let Mortal Kombat begin ! Begging forgiveness if this instigates another red vs yellow war , but here's a D4 versus 1DX review you might like to read.

I've waited for months for a comparison between these two flagships. Thanks! :thumbs up That 1DX looks bigger than the D4 and it is Rs 80K/~23% more expensive than the D4, in India.

There will always be areas where one is better than the other. But let the games begin and these champs duke it out. :)

IF you shoot RAW + JPEG keep the RAW writes to CF which is much faster (even compared with a 90MBps SD card) and JPG to the SD card. This is unless you want to keep one card in 'overflow' or 'backup' mode. I'd have liked to try out Lexar. According to what I read most people prefer Sandisk to Lexars. AFAIK Lexar isn't available here officially.

Of course there will be a compromise with a 16.6x lens. But these super zooms are targetted more towards travel/tourist photos where carrying multiple lenses is a drawback for most travellers and changing lenses is difficult in dust/rain/snow fall. The 18-200 was pretty well accepted but do wait for real life reviews of the 18-300 before you buy it. ALSO consider that if you shift to FX (D800 as you mention above) this lens will be an unnecessary purchase. Might as well go for a FX lens like a 300mm F4, works well on FX and DX, for less than the price of a 18-300 zoom!

Regarding SDHC/SDXC cards, I have used and found Toshiba to be faster than Sandisk, though Sandisk is more readily available.

Some folks are saying that the 18-300 has equivalent IQ to 18-105 and 70-300 VR at their respective ranges. If really so, I am tempted to sell both these lenses and go for the 18-300. But I am skeptical - there must be compromises with the 18-300 lens, 70-300mm VR I believe is supposed to be better than the 55-200 and 50-300. One of those zooms that give the best value for money. Note: I haven't used 55-200 or 50-300 - just read about them on forums. I do use the 70-300.

@ tsk1979: how do you find the D7000 focusing for action shots? A couple of folks I was shooting with in Tadoba complained that sometimes there are issues. Though I suspect that perhaps they didn't fully optimize the settings for action/wildlife.

agree: IQ on a superzoom lens would probably not be as good as a prime, or even an 18-55 or 70-300. I tried out one 18-200, but reverted to my 18-105 and 70-300, despite the bother of changing lenses in dusty conditions. Also, why carry the additional weight if you don't always need it. I use the 18-105 on the D7000 for most of the time.

Autofocus on the D7000 works fast n best when the AF-modes are selected/set correctly. Works well even in low light, and also at long focal lengths with my Nikkor 70-300 VR, which is an FX lens.
Also, one can set the AE/AF-L button on the top-rear panel for AF-lock instead of using half press of the shutter release - it takes some getting used to (focusing with your thumb instead of index finger) but gives better timing, ease of recomposing - and also helps prevent involuntary clicks while focusing.

Can somebody help me please?

Guys,

I've a simple question. I hope to find some answers here.

I'll be leaving to Singapore/Malaysia next month and have plans to purchase a zoom lens for my Sony A33 SLT. I have a standard 18-55 lens which comes along as a kit.

Which zoom lens would you think is best for this?? It has to be similar to Minolta AF 75-300 Beercan. Can you guys suggest to me what other options I have?? I'm still an inexperienced fellow in all this.

hi,

I want to do some HDR processing (dont know if this is the right term) and i have some shots that were taken at -,0,+ exposures. what is a good tool to do this? anything available free?

Also - for superimposing one pic over other (using layering) - what software to use? PS is one - anything else available?

Thanks.

Toshiba is one of the recommended mem card brands by Nikon. Others are Lexar, Sandisk and Panasonic. Only Sandisk is readily available in India. Lexar has many issues with data corruption in their latest range of cards - while Sandisk has been more or less issue free.

Read/write speeds will vary from SD card model to model & camera to camera. What manufacturers specify are max speeds under test conditions.

Try Photomatix Pro for HDR. Download HDR photography software Photomatix This is what I use. But it's shareware with a 30 day trial. Free options see here

Exactly what are you planning to photograph? The subject will drive the type of lens you need to buy. If a 75-300 on your Sony (1.5x crop sensor IIRC) will be ok for large subjects including people and mammalian wildlife but may be a stretch for birds.

I looked at the comparison. Though not interested in these two right now, who can't help reading about which is the greatest of them all?:)

After reading, want to highlight a qualifier: these guys are wedding photographers! So they will focus more on specific aspects. A wildlife or landscape photographer - for example - will have different weightages for different strengths.

Sony announced a new 55-300 for the A-mount. I just came across this piece of information on dpreview.com.

Not sure if it would hit Indian shores, but a friendly neighborhood Sony dealer might have more information.

Photomatix Pro in trial mode never expires but adds a watermark to the final tone mapped image.

I use GIMP extensively for PP and always prefer to merge a layer of tone mapped image (using Luminance) over the original image with the opacity greatly reduced. This way the final result looks less cartoonish. I will try to post a sample. Oh those overly done HDR's all over the net :Frustrati
