Tks @Raghuholla & starscream

I have decided to go with D90 & buy here at Hyderabad. third eye, victory labs, Byas & co, foto future, etc are quoting around 53K for Kit & 40K for Body.
I am planning to buy body only & buy lens seperately as 18-105 lens reviews are not good in most of the forums.
18-55 VR - ~7k
55-200 VR - 12k
18-200 VR11 - 48k(will get from US)

Now,
Which is the best place to buy D90 Body at Hyderabad?
Which is the best Lens combination (18-55 & 55-200) or 18-200 or (18-105 & 70-300 VR) lens?
How essential is 50 f/1.8 lens?
what accessories to buy?
SB400 flash, memory card, bag, spare battery, tripod, anything else..

Hi

I have a Canon 1000D i bought 1 1/2 years back. I used it with the kit 18-55 lens, till 3 months back my friends gifted me a Sigma 70-300 lens. However I find that I primarily use the kit lens (mostly in the 18-20mm region; though if I could, I would slightly wider also at times). Now I wish to upgrade to a better lens, but cannot spend too much- not much more than Rs. 10-12 k. I have heard that the new kit lens being offered by Canon, the 18-55 IS is a much sharper lens, leagues ahead of its previous avatar.

Does it make sense for me to buy it (also is it available second hand). Or should I just hold and wait till I can afford a proper wide angle. I do not wish to carry more than 2 lens, and I like the flexibility of zooms.

a. which forums did you frequent?
b. I'd consider the 18-05/70-300 the best $1000 combo you can get.
c. Get the SB600. The 400 does not buy you too much.
d. the battery grip is something I like especailly if you are going to use bigger lenses sometime.

What do you guys think of the below combinations?

Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 carbon fiber tripod + 322RC2 ball head
Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 carbon fiber tripod + 498RC2 ball head
Manfrotto 190XPROB + 322RC2 ball head (less costly)
Manfrotto 055XPROB + 322RC2

I see them up there on ebay and thought if I can pick one of the combinations either from India or during my next visit to US after a few months.

I'm planning to use 550D with this.
Thanks.

Congratulation! You won't regret it. I have no idea from where you can buy. Nikon India has authorized sellers/dealers. Check it there. I got min from amazon!

I too have read the reviews of 18-55 better than 18-105. Personally I have no experience. May be this helps.. Nikkor DX kit lens group test: 18-55mm vs 18-70mm vs 18-135mm vs 18-200mm VR Cameralabs introduction

I have 17-55 f/2.8G, 35 f/1.8G, 70-300 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR.

It is good to have this lens, works very well when you take those pictures in room with less light and without flash . 50mm on D90 will be around 75mm. If you buy 35mm, it would be nearer to 50mm (for 35mm equiv, or full frame). If you are short on budget, get this lens later.
For any lens you buy, should also get 1 UV filter
(Multi-coated one better). You should also own 1 polarizer filter (usually for wide angle one)!
If you are getting a Memory card, try getting class 6 and above. if you can afford class 10, even better.

I agree, if you can afford go for SB 600 is good, also get diffuser for the same. Nikon ML-L3 remote is also good to have. With 1 or 2 lens you should get good bag. Tripod you can add later. Get a good tripod once. See to it that it can support your gear with everything attached (flash, heaviest lens you have, battery grip)

Normally i see kenrockwell, dpreview, bhp, etc. Kenrockwell strongly recommends 18-55 intead of 18-105. Also for travel he strongly recommends 18-200.
If 18-105 is as good as 18-55, then I will go with 18-105 & 70-300 combo with 50 f1.8.
i am still a amatuer & yet to learn tricks of photography. but the bug has bitten.
Accessory list,
1. SB600 flash with diffuser
2. UV filter
3. Tripod
4. extra Battery(grip later)
5. Memory card

Pl let me know good place to buy at Hyderabad, even bangalore is also fine.

KR has way of writing, sometimes its plain bullshit! Like he tells you, you are an idiot if you are buying D90 or D300,you don't need it, blah balh! He over emphasis things he wants to convey. DP review on the other hand always objective and fare.

Bigger zoom range, more convenient. But optic always suffers to produce optimum lights at higher range (read 105mm and above). Because of this shorter range zooms always have better picture. Even so is prime lense at fixed zoom (like one we suggest you to get). Alternatively you can buy a fixed aperture lens (like 17~55mm f/2.8, 70~200 f/2.8 which costs a bomb and its heavy!). There is always a trade off! I would suggest you, not even to bother to get 70~300 yet, get one lens 18~55 or 18~105 cheaper the better, because if you are not satisfied can get some thing better, even used one! Try to master taking picture with manual setting etc. Once you are comfortable, then decide on special purpose lens.

In 70~300mm you have one with VR, another without it. At higher zoom VR makes much difference, more so is tripod. With tripod you may also want to look at remote that I mentioned (you get it for 3$ as someone ordered from ebay). But it helps a lot not to touch camera at sunset photos with zoom lens on!

In Bangalore, PM shajufx about shops, sure he will help you out. he has mentioned about Jayesh shop. I always got things from US so far.

Off the current topic: Instead of buying 18-55 and 55-200, why should one buy an 18-200 ?

1. AFAIK, cost is high ?
2. Dpreview says the canon 18-200 fails at some places. Well, like no car is perfect, no cam /lens can be perfect. Whats your take??
3. single lens is more luggage friendly

pardon my ignorance- just stepping into dslr

a. do not buy primes untill you have a handle on what you shoot.
b. I can understand want to have a lens combo that covers 28mm-400mm (FF equivalent) but primes are specialist lenses more so with DSLRS where you can only switch lenses safely in a dust free location.

Anad as far as Ken Rockwell goes. Hmmm... RaguHolla said it well.

I like IS/VR on all my lenses. It buys you atleast one stop so you can shoot in lower light.

Tiger, get the D90 kit. You have to take Rockwell with a pinch of salt and remember that his advice is general in nature and doesn't take into account the peculiarities of the Indian market viz. Nikon lenses are expensive, bodies and kits aren't.

You get the 18-105 for a very decent price with the kit and the extra reach will be very useful when you travel with just one lens. The 18-55 may be better but you won't be able to tell the difference in real world shooting and will always yearn for more reach on the long end.

Don't worry about equipment so much when you are starting out. Start with the D90 kit and add the other stuff as and when you feel the need.

The Nikon site shows two DSLR zones in Hyd- Byas and IIIrd I.
