So my plan to donate a Kaspersky license to my cousin in US goes for a toss.

So what if someone who has purchased a Kaspersky license in India and also activated in India, goes abroad with their laptop, does that mean, he will not get protection when abroad.

actually! Kaspersky, i bought long ago as low as 200 for three user. thats is my transfer price though.

They hiked the price when they found people here selling license on ebay through email.

A cousin of mine bought a 3 licence version from Bangalore for use in a PC in the UAE. IIRC, it didnt activate the antivirus. Will need to check with him what happened finally.

Recently Kaspersky made a change with their 2010 version. They no longer allow you to activate via the key file. Hence license issued from India will not work, if you try to activate it in the middle-east.
HOWEVER, there is a work around. I have tried it and it works!
You need to generate a key file from the activation code (via your personal cabinet). Once you have the keyfile, you need to activate it as follows:

There is a workaround to get the activation done if you purchase the license in India and activate it overseas.

Kaspersky does not work across regions due to strict IP Filtering norms and for packs bought here in India, they can be used only in India. Earlier around just over a year back it used to work but due to cross country sales affecting the market KL had implemented this IP filtering and the signature databases are not updated @ all.

As posted by "S_U_N" the license key file has to be downloaded to activate it overseas but I would not suggest that as it is a tedious process of following it with the tech support team of the respective region as there are some issues which cannot be guaranteed whether it will work without any hassles. Keeping all this in mind, I would not suggest that method as the KL support forum itself does not encourage or recommend it.

VJ_MAVRICK: I am not sure about the updates itself not getting downloaded in another country. I don't think that would be the case. This would cause problems for people who travel overseas frequently.
As far as the activation is concerned, it takes less than 10 minutes of work (no need to call tech support either). Yes, but for those who are not computer savvy, I would not recommend getting into any of this.

Hi Guys
Need advise on buying a antivirus software for my SIL.

Since the laptop is in use in college, there are a variety of pen drives and networks accessed by the laptop and I am scared about the virus part. McCafee license expires in another few days. Hence I need to buy one that can give roboust protection atleast for a year.

While I was browsing for Norton, I found it has two flavours : Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet security.

Can anyone kindly tell me the difference between the two please ? Laptop in question is occasionaly used for browsing. Other than that, its only used for sharing files through pen drives, LAN, etc.

Lastly, does it make sense to buy the same from ebay.in Found some deals on the same ? Or should I stick to "Brick and Motor" shops which sell the norton software.

Norton is Bloatware. NIS includes firewall and site advisor.
I would advice getting Kaspersky or QuickHeal.

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for the past couple of months. I was on McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i Patch 2 with Antispyware plugin before that.

The first thing I noticed about the MSSE was the install file's size - the Setup was only ~8 MB in size, compare this to the 80+ for the McAfee. I was a bit cynical, even thought it was a joke. But hey, it worked - and worked better than the latest-updated-McAfee.

It is well known that almost all the USB drives / HDD that I come across will have one or the other variant of an autorun infection, and the McAfee almost never found one upon use. MSSE pounces on it the moment I plug-in a USB drive. The flip side is, it takes a few minutes to clean the infection (not sure if it gets the cleaning database in realtime from the MS servers out there, explaining the small installation size).

Apart from McAfee and MSSE, I have tried AVG, Kaspersky and Avast at various times. And I gotta say MSSE has converted me to its favour. Try it, you wont regret!

With hardware costing peanuts why avoid Norton?
To me, its the best AV to have.
I have 2GB RAM with Vista and Norton. Till now I didn't even notice any performance issues.

You don't need to sacrifice bro.
With my 2GB RAM, I have 1 GB unoccupied most of the times and CPU (core 2 duo) almost always 99% idle.
Unless you go for some VR games you are unlikely to exhaust your 4GB.
