I am also planning for a mobo + procy and my budget is also similar.

So far, I have fixed my processor to AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9GHz (Costs 5.5k) and still looking out for a good mobo. Will update you as soon as I fix that.

While researching for you, I found out that there is actually a very good processor costing ~Rs 4000.

AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0 GHz

Of course, if you want a fourth core for a bit more bucks, you have the option of

AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.7 GHz

But note that not many applications are optimized for four cores, and you'll benefit more from the higher clock rate of X3.

This makes most of the proccys in the 4k-6k range redundant unless you plan to overclock, which I presume, you don't. If you do intend on it, there are two Black Edition CPUs available at this price range.

There are options if you're willing to spend more than 6k on the processor, which, I don't think you need to. 4k for this, + 4-5k for the motherboard will land you in the 8k spot which you were happy to stick to earlier. This gives you the margin of a power supply upgrade if required.

For motherboards, I suggest you stick with Gigabyte, Asus or MSI, find a suitable AM3 socket motherboard (note : AM3, not AM2+) and google up the model number and read reviews. If no negative review is there, go ahead.

For any sort of advice, let me know.

EDIT : According to Prateek's post above, the X4 has a clock rate of 2.9 GHz. Googled a bit and turns out he's right. In that case, you might wanna look into the X4 if you want to.

I have not been active on this thread, but just wanted to post about my new machine that i just aquired:
It is an Asus eee PC, a netbook - very basic compared to all the heavy weights here.
It has Intel Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz, Intel GMA 950 video card, has normal video out, and a few USB ports. 1GB ram, upgradable to 2GB.

The video can go upto 1900x1400 on my 24 inch LCD monitor, but only 1024x600 on the small screen on the netbook.

The mouse pad also has multitouch capability - which means you can zoom-in (or out) with your two fingers extending in (or out) - like the iphone.

What it does not have is the HDMI port - which i dont plan to use anyway with this machine.

I have almost finalised my config. I finally settled for a 3 core procy since it's adequate for most of the gaming. With the price that I save, I could get a better mobo that supports DDR3 RAM and also increased my budget a bit for a nice gfx card.

After my laptop bricked recently, i was trying to put together a system. Found an excellent Dell system and i was having a tough time matching the price if i assembled it myself. Just got the system delivered today. Below is the config details:

Total cost including taxes and delivery is 77,000. Try assembling the same config and it runs upward of 95k.

I tried assembling a i5-750 PC and hardware alone runs to 44K. I also thought of going with Dell since you get everything at a similar price. You might lose a little with mobo but you need to see if you really need more USB ports or PCI slots.
