If you calibrate LCDs, it would reduce power consumption of LCD as well. Part of calibration is reducing contrast/brightness from factory levels. This would reduce power consumption of any display.

You are right. But from what i have read on the web, the decrease is lesser for LCDs compared to plasmas.

Below is the calibrated ratings for a philips LCD.

So while calibration reduces power consumption from 200 to 150W for the LCD, it reduces from 230 to 118 for the Plasma. Again, we may not get the same savings in the normal viewing environment at our homes.

What i was pointing out was the "power-hogging" comment. I feel the consumption should be more or less the same for both over a longer period of time.

the calibrated average power consumption for latest plasmas is less than the lcds of similar size. the LEDs are better though.

I was going by the following:-

• Rated power consumption (My Panny 42" PV8 has a figure that is nearly twice my 29" CRT Panny)
• News reports of plasmas being restricted in California, etc.
• Power bills increasing by around Rs 100 to 150 per month over the past 2 years after owing a Plasma.

It could be true that newer models consume less power, but then newer models of LCDs would also consume lesser power.

I just bought Sony 40EX400. No special offers by any dealers so went to Sony World and bought it home. It's 57900 and one Wireless headphone and some coupons got as freebees.

Happy with it and yet to explore more on the Bravia Sync as I have Sony home theater too.


I asked for reviews on Croma LCD and due to no replies asked once more. Instead of reviews got Infractions. Rules are rules but it hurts.

Looking at my last years payment and power consumption. Approx 2.5 Hrs of daily TV usage -

Month Dec 2009: Bill is aprrox 90-100 units prior to plasma but using 21" CRT CTV
Post Jan 2010: With same usage, 42" Plasma and TS+ added, to comes ~100-110 Units.

In month of April, May it is going ~140 Units. Please note that in monsoon there increased use of WM and Dryer. In summer we use all fans.

NOTE: Sep 2010 is faulty reading, (reading not taken but added to next months bill)

That is mainly for large plasma panels. 60 inches or larger which are not energy efficient, and not plasma's in general.

It is very clear that LEDs are quite energy efficient compared to both LCD and Plasmas. LCDs are more efficient than Plasmas in general (Calibrated and stock settings).

Hi,

I am presently in the market for a 32' LCD, and maybe also for a 42' Plasma.

My requirement for a LCD is mainly for few hours of SD / Hathway STB everyday. Gaming is a big NO and even movies would be very occasionally watched. This LCD would be a embellishment to the living room in the new house we are moving into. As such i have been looking at only vfm deals (Read as cheap as possible; ie, <25k).

My research has thrown up these deals:
1) LG 32LD310 for Rs. 21,000
2) LG 32LD340 for Rs. 27,000.
3) A Panasonic model for Rs.22,500

Request your valued views on the above models and prices vis-a-vis my requiremnts. Feel free to suggest if i should look for any other particular deal?

I would also probably look at purchasing a 42"Plasma too...for which i have been looking at the Panasonic 42X20 for which the best i was quoted Rs.35000?

Kindly advise.

Hi Mushy,
I am assuming that the requirement is for the Bedroom and not a very big room. If so, 42" will not serve the purpose.
I will strongly recommed going for the Samsung Series 4 LCD. Its available in Delhi for a price of around 27500 and I am really happy with its performance for past 4 months.
I have played SD/HD Ready and HD Content. Even connected it with Laptop many a times and it has proved its worth each time with its sharp picture and contrast.
The best thing I find is its ability to play all kind of media (even Divx) directly from the USB (I know DVD players have this ability too but this feature made me not to buy a DVD player at all).
Only negative is the viewing angle(as with the case with many LCD's) which tends to show blacks as greys as angle of viewing increases.

I have a sony bravia 32" in bedroom, but mostly when i need to watch some business news either kid needs the TV or wife is watching some soap.

I am using a Dual monitor setup which is a 22" samsung and a 17" Samsung LCD connected to my PC, i have Intex LCD TV tuner connected to my 22" samsung, but problem is sometimes i cannot spare the LCD for T.V. and its difficult to use 17" for TV as it doesn't gives good viewable output.

So i though i would buy another 22" samsung monitor but i am not happy with output of cable TV on monitor, however this monitor is full HD, and i use this resolution when connected to PC, but LCD TV tuner doesn't gives the resolution i would like to view.
Cable tv in question is digital output/STB based, but run by cable operator.
The display is excellent when i connect a T.V. instead of LCD monitor.

So can someone suggest me which 22" or 26" LCD TV to go with ?
Max budget is 15K.

Also i would need this TV either on Table along existing setup,
or fixed on wall little above behind existing setup.

View distance is same as of PC monitor, Don't want to turn head every next minute.

Consider the LG 23" monitor+TV. I use one. It has a lot of I/O ports so you can connect a lot of sources to it. LG 23 Inch LCD Flatron Monitor ? Model LG M237WA
