E72 needs a more stable firmware. i would suggest you wait till it functions with the same amount of ease that the erstwhile E63 and E71 did. It hangs a lot. And has issues with memory leakage. Also, there are a few bugs in the phone that make it unusable at times. I sold mine in a month.

:) You are talking of e911.
I was talking of A-GPS, where the mobile phone's GPS sub-section requests and gets a couple of pieces of information, like standard time, probable satellites in view (based on the lat-long-HASL position of the cellular tower to which the device is currently connected; the device sends this to the server in the request packet), etc., to speed up resolving the current GPS position. The resolution is still from the GPS signals only, the A-GPS serves the purpose of 'cheat notes' for the GPS!!!
The above can be done only if access is available to the Internet from the phone, like through GPRS or Wi-fi. Some phones do it whenever they can, like HTC WiMo phones such as TD2 etc. Others do it just when the GPS starts to get a satellite fix. |
There is only one A-GPS. Even e911 uses the same A-GPS but as I said the location is demanded by the network and the assistance data is delivered over wireless radio channel.
The A-GPS used for map location might be a generic implementation wherein the assistance data is delivered basically over a data connection. This could have been a added service implementation done later to help map based navigation.
:p @srishiva, I think you are getting the direction of the request wrong. What we have been discussing here w.r.t. A-GPS is the assistance that the mobile handset's GPS section needs to quickly establish a GPS fix. This is used by the mobile handset user.
What you are driving at is the cellular network's query to the mobile handset to fix the mobile handset's location (virtually the location of the person in trouble), which is to be used by emergency services to send help ASAP. e911 does not mandatorily need GPS in the handset - if it is present, it helps. Otherwise it still relies on good old tower triangulation. Has to, since a majority of mobile handsets in US don't have GPS built-in.
You are not wrong, just that the discussion point here was different - about GPS, mapping and navigation with a mobile handset, not emergency services. And no, A-GPS for mapping / navigation (late 80's, early 90's) pre-dates e911 (late 90's) - it was in use in defense earlier. It has been available for consumer/industrial use only in the last 6-7 years. How long do you think car navigation has been around?
DerAlte, Yeah it was a bit OT. All I meant to say was A-GPS is same whether its used for map or emergency. I just wanted to add info on the other (important) use of A-GPS.
We can continue on what been discussed now....

Need all major features to be available. Any suggestions to make a faster decision? |
E72 all the buddy.
Compare the two phones spec by spec. You will come out totally convinced. The premium the BB commanded owing to its brand value has been killed by E71 and E72. And(Yes yes Sam. I know it is poor English), the novelty of touch will wear off in some time. E72 is one solid all rounder phone.
Best of luck.

JKD no the 5233 doesnt have AGPS, check the detailed spec, I know it mentions on top screen on Nokia website that it has AGPS but detailed spec doesnt mention AGPS/GPS. Even the Box has no mention. |
I think 5230 must have been hurting 5800 sales. 5233 would allow them to fight with Samsung Corby & similar touch phones at that price point.
Those who bought 5230 while it was there are lucky :)

well, then I was one of the lucky ones! I opted for the 5230 instead of the 5800 :D since it had the features I wanted.
BTW, I did a comparo on the nokia website between 5233 & 5230 and couldn't spot any differences, so why 2 models?
Hi Guys
Apologies if this topic has been discussed before..(I am a newbie)..I visit India at least 3-4 times a year and need to buy a permanent sim. What re the recommendations? I do have ususal proof of residence, bills etc. just dont know which
network would allow me a sim which can be used whenever I am in India. Thanks
Guys,
any idea which is the cheapest mobile which we can connect to HyperTerminal and send AT commands to send SMS?
@gomzi - Read my post a few pages back. 5233 lacks 3G & GPS & is cheaper than the 5230 & competes with the likes of Corby.
What is difference between resistive and capacitive touch screens?
What is the advantage from users' POV?

Start your search here -
Nokia - Gammu Phone Database
5233 does have GPS, it lacks 3G.
@NFB- But both of the following official links dont mention GPS in 5233

There’s no GPS onboard. Oh wait there is. Oh no there isnt. We’ve been hearing conflicting reports on this ever since we heard of the 5233. Nokia said the 5233 is exactly like the 5230 except that it doesnt have 3G. But both the 5230 and 5233 have “A-GPS” listed in their specs page. Which was the reason I was so surprised to find only “Network based” and “External GPS” listed under the positioning methods. I cant speak for the 5230 but the 5233 does not have real GPS Source |
Nokia 5230 is still listed on Nokia's India web page.
Nokia India - Nokia 5230 - Products. So I do not think it is taken off the market.
Anyway my 5230 hangs whenever I switch it completely off and then on again.
I have to take the battery and memory-card out and insert them again many times to make it work. Not sure if it is just my handset or others facing this. So now whenever I want to switch off, I put it in offline mode.
I think 5233 does NOT have GPS nor A-GPS.
When is the Motorola Droid launching here>?
