Am using Opera Mobile instead of mini.

And do you find any heating issues like what @funda2max has posted here?

You are very very right. It is a trade off between Speed and browsing experience. But I must confess, I never knew this.

And no, no heating issues at all. Some gadbad with his mobile perhaps. He might like to follow it up.

I purchased a Nokia E72 from Mobilestore two days back and it seems to have some issues in 3G network. It heats up very very quickly in 3G network and can't able to talk or hold the phone more than 2-3 mins. Has anyone experienced the same problem? Please advice.

Use your 3G SIM and check in some other Nokia E72 if it heats or not.
3G usually consumes more power but I have not seen sets heating up.

I got it replaced by mobile stores. Let me see how this one performs.

Picked up Nokia E72 yesterday. So far so good. Have loaded it with loads of applications without any signs of hanging/restarting.

Regarding the Firmware upgrade, mine is v 21.024. Did try to update through NSU as well as OTA but of no avail. Guess the latest firmware is specific to certain countries.

I just got a E72 as well, can u tell me what apps you have put on it?

Here is a list of the free and pre-installed apps that I have:

I also found Beta Labs pretty interesting - they have a bunch of innovative apps / ideas, mostly for Symbian phones.

OK Guys , I got a hold of Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica which FrankMehta reviewed. This is a plane Jane Android phone that means no visible or overall very little customizations done by Samsung.

Overall whatever frank wrote applies but this phone confirmed my view that Android is a resource drain and too slow as of today. In Fact only Android phone I have seen performing well is Motorola Droid as it has a quite high end processor but is expensive too.

Here are my observations.

Positives or negatives depending on point of view.

+ves :

1. It is an Android phone which can support latest release but quite cheap ( just 11750 Rs)
2. It is one of the better performing phones in this generation.
3. You can download Android applications most of them are free.
4. If you are enthusiast and programmer you can download Android SDK and develop your own apps and download on this phone.

5. No UI customization by Samsung ( In case you hate Samsung and it's UI ) You can just cover the Samsung logo at the top with black tape and carry it around. It is last android phone from Samsung which does not have touchwiz so last chance for those who hate Samsung.

Negatives

1. No UI customization. Despite all it's flaws and criticism TouchWiz UI is little easy to use compared to Android UI flow.

2. Android Messaging ; The messaging application ( SMS and MMS) are Android ones and not like other Samsung phones. The SMS management is non-intuitive and poor. If you are used to a Nokia I am quite sure you will not really like this.

3. Overall UI update is slow if you move the phone from Potrait to landscape there is a lag unlike other non-Android phones which do it in Jiffy.

You need to remember i5700 is one of the better performing Android phone but it falls short of any Symbian phone leave alone Samsung Jet phone has almost same hardware and it simply outperforms everything.

4. SIM reading is really slow , SMS on mobile and SIM memory are not presented in a single view and it takes ages to read SMS from SIM if you have stored a few on your SIM card.

4. There are plethora of applications on Android App store but how many of them are really useful as of today. You can find a lots of IM apps based on libpurple ( IM+ , AIM , Meeboo) but unique productivity and collaborative apps such as for Desktop / Presentation sharing are missing.

So my verdict , by this phone if you are keen on Android.

In case you are an ordinary user and it makes no difference to you if this is Android or not save your money by either buying a Corby or increase your budget and go for Nokia N97.

As of today in terms of application availability there is no match to iPhone and BB so in case you are a business user and your compney pays you do not have case to switch to Android.

As Operators do not subsidize the phones in India I do not recommend that individual buyers should go for Droid because only problems it solve are performance and Motorolas UI customization.

Another forum to tarnish android and proclaim how better corby etc., are. Buddy, you may want to add disclaimer that you work for Samsung :)

Belittle android apps as much as you want to but cannot deny the wide range of apps available there. More are getting added almost every day. Support for syncing outlook or opening office docs is not very far. Given thousands of developers working on android apps, you cannot predict what app will be coming next.

Vijay Please do not bring the discussion of android thread here and I think before you continue to carry the flag of defending android at least try the simple tests I wrote below of moving from landscape to portrait mode etc , Android in one hand and a mass market phone in another hand.

I think you do not seem to distinguish between business model and community traction which I proclaimed several times is good for Android
and technical capability which is still behind the market.

The phones recommended below are N97 from No1 manufacturer and iPhone if one needs a phone with down loadable productivity apps , And Corby from No2 manufacturer depending on the needs.

I need not tarnish Android , It is only 1% market share.

If you see below the phone I reviewed is Samsung i5700, it does not matter if I work for Samsung or not , I am not in business for advertising for them. If it helps you in some way, You can be happy about the fact that Samsung is into Android phones in big way and thrashing Android is not what a Samsung loyalist will do. Probably you will see more Android phones from Samsung in time to come then HTC but yes it is true they will continue to provide multiple platforms instead of Motorola Android only approach and seeing the total volumes Android will still be a small percentage overall.

FYI Q409 8+ million iPhone were sold and just less then 1 million androids. Just for comparison Samsung Jet in similar price and feature range received 2 million pre-orders.

Do a Google search to confirm the above data

But let this thread remain a thread for feedback based on real experiences of user who buy phone spending money.

Yes despite criticizing so much I do have a droid and A nexus-one ( among others for comparison and benchmarking) and I have spent my own personal money on i5700 for some specific purpose but I will not recommend the same to someone else who is not keen on Android.

i have most or all of those apps. U can PM me the list of hacked/cracked apps ;). Its been a pain finding good themes for this phone though :(

I have an old classic CDMA phone from Reliance which does not have a SIM card. It is a SIMless phone to be precise.

If I want to buy a new phone and keep this number, how do I get a SIM? Does Reliance allow you to convert from SIMless to SIMbased phone?

Can someone give me the prices for Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica and Samsung Jet in Mumbai?

My E71 is restarting when i tried to connect it to my Lappie via WLAN. Anyone having same problem while using WLAN on E71 ?

Yes, it is possible. Visit one of those Reliance shops. They may have a SIM card plus another charge card like thing. If they don't stock it, they may ask you to procure from some other shop dealing with mobile stuff. The card used to cost around Rs 150. Then they enter the details in their system and ask you to wait for 24 hours. In all probability, your new SIM will be activated within hours. I got it done in Hyderabad.

Cheers.

Reliance world is the best place to get this done. They would be able to do it and the sim will be activated in less than 24 hours!

Do not go to Web World. Some of them are cheats.
When I changed my handset, I was told the handset change card was Rs 100.
I was not sure, so called up customer care. The price was under Rs .30

Just call up customer care. :)
