One of my cousins who is a college student plans to purchase a phone with his budget of Rs.2500.

His priorities are :
  1. Good Battery life
  2. PC connectivity
  3. The phone should not get heated up.
  4. Reliability(atleast for 3 years).
Planning for Motorola W230. How is this phone ? And, how is the service support of Motorola in India ?

Any other recommendations at this price point ?

No one in his family is having any experience with Motorola phones since all are Nokia fanatics !

Believe me, except for calls, I've not used any other features of either phones. I even have GPS on my HTC but I've never used. 1 feature which I do use regularly is WiFi. Both phones have WiFi and I browse Internet on this quite often.
Are there anybody else having HTCp3300? Give me some ideas how I can customise these phones to use up all the features.
Also, after formatting the HTC, GPS doesn't work.Does anybody have any clue of what needs to be done to get it back to working?
My wife has a p3300, and just this weekend i spent some time getting the GPS up and running.
You have 2 options to use GPS:
1. Use offline mapking maps that come with your GPS. Adv: These maps are offline and are on the device - so no need of wifi or GPRS connection.

2. Use google maps. Adv: These are probably more upto date with more land marks updated. But this would need gprs.

I configured for both, but have not had a chance to use google maps as i dont have GPRS. However, mapking by itself is not bad at all. It does support turn by turn directions too - however, whether it the best route is something debatable as road conditions in Bangalore change so often. In my opinion this is very useful when going to a new locality.

If your device came with the mount to be mounted on the windshield, thats the best way to use it as it has good satellite coverage as well as you have good visibility while driving.

If you formatted the HTC, you will need to reinstall Mapking and reregister. This will involve giving a code that is attached to your hardware - you can recover your code from mapking.com if you have forgotten. Their customer support was quite helpful although they were slow.

neat. That'll probably help. It did come with the mounting and I currently use it to use handsfree. thats all.The only add on i've used is the 'slide to unlock ' software.works brilliantly.

Update on Asus 526 mobile - clean boot formatted the memory card!

Today my phone had a clean boot (mistakenly by one of my friends) and the card was formatted automatically by the phone! I could detect it after installing the SDHC card patch mentioned in first post on this thread but when I accessed it on phone, no data was available.
Thanks to SPB backup software bundled with the phone in the box, I could get my phone book back but rest, all latest data gone (like mapking. No issues with emails as they were on the mail server too.
Disgusting but can not help.
Taking this oppertunity to refresh my phone now with only software that are practically useful.

Thanks!

Are all wireless networks at railway stations secured, meaning that you require a password to be able to connect?

Nokia E61i Hangs after installing BBConnect 4.0_8.17

Hi!

Anyone running BBConnect4.0_8.17 on a Nokia E61i with 3.0633.69.00 firmware ?

I've installed this combination and am facing issues with the phone hanging when I use any application like contacts, browser, Message Inbox. No response from the phone, and sometimes I get to a blank screen.

Anyone face similar issue ?

thanks

Req:
Must have a big screen and display any document format like doc, pdf or even txt.

I like to read and have been using a Kyocera 7135 till now.
Network provider can be gsm, cdma or anything else, I don't care.
Important thing is document reading.

@bblost,
10K to 15K
Asus P320: 11K. 2.8" screen, 320x240px (QVGA). Reads all the stuff you mentioned, and can also read .lit (MS Reader format). Runs on WiMo, is Touch Screen. Has GPS.
Nokia E63: 12.5K. 2.4" screen, 320x240px. Runs on Symbian. Reads all the stuff you mentioned. To read .lit, you have to convert to Mobipocket format. Has 3.5mm Jack. QWERTY Kbd. Torch Great messaging device.

15K to 20K
HTC Touch Viva: 15.5K. 2.8" screen, 320x240px. Does all that the Asus P320 does (is WiMo). Does not have GPS.
Nokia E71: Same as E63. Is slimmer. Has metal body. Has GPS. Only 2.5mm jack. No torch
Nokia 5800: 640x360 widescreen format. Reads everything except .LIT.

20K and thereabouts
HTC Touch Diamond: 21K. 2.8" screen. 640x480px (VGA). Better res, but does not help that much for doc reading as screen size is the same as other QVGA devices. SO the font just becomes smaller and you see more on the same scree. VGA res without a 3.5" screen is a waste.

What is your budget? I remember that ebook reading is important to you. It is one of my main criteria too. I was looking at a second phone and these were the ones I considered (and rejected -- I'll prolly use my ancient Nokia 6100 and use the money saved to upgrade my ICE, heh heh).

If you have a 30-35K budget, you can consider the Nokia E90. Or wait for the Touch Diamond II (should be here by June). The TDII has 800x480 (WVGA) resolution and a 3.2" screen. should make for a great reading experience!

@bblost - if you want a perfect phone having everything and budget is no constraint then go and buy yourself the Xperia from Sony or X1. It's out of this world !!

At 40k or so, you cannot get more phone for your money.

Thanks guys.

Budget is about 15 or so.
Its difficult to find anything cheap and the price goes up as they want to put in a camera, flash and everything else.

btw have fallen for the Nokia 5800. Its got a very nice layout and design.
Simply love it.

I have a Nokia 6230i which is a decent phone for my use, but off late i am having problems with the battery.
Is it possible to just replace the battery? how much would it cost?

If that is not an option I would consider upgrading with a budget of 15-20k.
I want these in my phone:
GPRS, a good internet browser (should be able to access most of the sites, not just m-web sites), good screen resolution, bluetooth, ability to use phone as a modem to connect to internet, decent music player, WiFi

What do you guys say?

the battery can be replaced and costs depends fi you go for original nokia batteries which cost upto 1k to 1.2k and you will also get chinese made ones from 300 to 750 bucks!!
all work almost the same but for you satisfaction you can register the battery at nokia india site.

there are plenty of phones at 15 to 20k range.the nokia Nseries dominates this segment.you can get the nokia N95 8gb at this range if you check the Tbhp classifieds!!

I rarely use these buttons, but still, would like to get them replaced as they are a sore sight. The buttons are purely functional though.

Just wondering - does the warranty cover such replacement?

For reference, I am attaching (bad quality) pics.

Posting this for the benefit of others facing the same problem. I have been told by Nokia that this problem is quite common across many models.

I visited the Nokia master service center in Mumbai (Brightpoint - Lower Parel). A quick look and the attendant told me that I will need to hand over the phone for at least 2-3 days. They will replace the rubber buttons but need time since circuitry with the metal contacts underneath the rubber needs to be checked after replacement.

Yes, it is covered under warranty

Provided, there is no other physical or liquid damage to the phone, which they can check only upon my submission. If there is a willful damage on my part, charges are under Rs 100

Could not give the phone ion Saturday since I don't have a backup phone and they dont provide a standby phone also!
