Apparently, it was not.

What began as a red in Deco's started affecting the main modem too despite switching off the Decos.

What happened later - The main modem started acting weird, say, it used to open Amazon & Facebook, but won't open Twitter or Flipkart. Escalated, a guy visited (from Jio, my fiber connection is from Jio), could do nothing. Few tech guys came & went and finally someone was intelligent enough to speak with their tech team. They accessed the modem's network & concluded that save for PC's LAN cable & CCTV cable, other cables need to go. They specifically said, no external / additional modems. You can add Jio's own modem / extender.

They did that, reset it, it started working perfectly. At night, I plugged the cable back-in, same issue cropped. Have added an extender & save for the amazing range which Decos provided, this is working okay.

This information is important for anyone having Jio's fiber or planning to get Jio's fiber connection.

Re: On Wi-Fi & Routers

Picked up a TP Link AX55 Router to replace our aging Huawei router which started to reboot a few times in a week.
AX55

Quite pleased with the purchase. Setup took no more than 5 minutes. TP Link have made good strides with the web as well as mobile interface, making setup and management easy. We've got 9 wireless devices and 4 wired ethernet devices plugged in. Basically maxed out the gigabit ethernet ports.

8 out of 9 devices are steady on a Wifi 6 signal throughout the house. We have one Microsoft Surface device that sits a little away that defaults to a 2.4ghz frequency. I suspect a lousy in built wireless ethernet adapter as other devices operate fine at the same distance.

Our smart TV has always been plugged in over wired ethernet. Noticed improved response times on videos starting up with Streaming Apps. Our son has also noticed better response times on his gaming PC with any online activity. Ping results are fluctuating depending on time of day but I doubt that has anything to do with the router. Lets see if it all holds up over time.

Re: On Wi-Fi & Routers

Sorry in case this has been asked before. I tried to search the thread but 5G and WiFi router terms aren’t that helpful

I’m looking for a router that can accept a Jio or Airtel sim and work on LTE/4G/5G and work for a few devices that will need internet (Apple TV, laptops, phones) as I’ll be in a remote location and there is no hard line Internet available. Ideally I would love something like this but I couldn’t find anything locally available. Link - https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/SCR01-.../dp/B098XJ88HM

Why not use an old mobile phone (if you have) and use it as a hotspot. Should cover all your use cases.
If you don't have any old phone the cheapest phone should also do the trick. My 7 year old OnePlus 5 was a 4g phone. Something like that should work well for you unless you need a wired connection for any of your devices.

You can get the Airtel / Jio Wi-Fi dongle (Hotspot) device. Looks like even Amazon has one now.

That's the main option, use my iPhone as hotspot, but I needed a wifi local network and not just a hotspot. Hence looking for a LTE/5G Router

All of these suffer from poor performance/throughput and are ok for casual usage but not as a wifi router. I found this - https://amzn.to/3WPYNPI if cannot find anything better will pick it up.

Probably an overkill, one option is to :
  1. Share 5G connection from Phone via Hotspot (or via Jio/ Airtel Hotspot Device)
  2. Use any WiFi repeater / router as a Local WiFi network . Configure it to share internet from Hotspot.

This will create a strong local network via router / repeater (s)

Re: On Wi-Fi & Routers

I am a Jio Fiber user, and my Jio Fiber Router was giving slow internet connection. I used to recharge with 100mbps package, but I only used to receive about 60-70 mbps speed. Therefore I purchased TP-Link Router (Model: AC1200 Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Router) and connected its WAN port with the Jio Fiber Router using an Ethernet cable.

Now I am getting full 100mbps speeds from every corner of my three BHK flat (1800 square feet) from the Tp-Link Router. So far, I'm really impressed with its features, as well as its Internet speed and stability. I highly recommend it for the users who want a decent high speed wifi Internet connection at home

Have you placed the router in the center of your home or in one corner?

I have positioned the router in the living room. This is not the center of my flat, but rather near my balcony. Be assure that the router's positioning will not interfere with its signal in the medium-sized apartment. I have been using it for last three years.

Re: On Wi-Fi & Routers

My Asus router is primarily meant for connection to incoming fibre modem, but I know that there is an option, at least for backup use, of usb-connecting/tethering to a phone.

Whilst it might be might be useful too have the net thus connected, I don't really need it, and my wife and I have two mobile devices each with 1gb/day data, which mostly goes unused. So, during occasional fibre outages, she just uses mobile data, and I tether my phone direct to my PC. Only thing is that my PC doesn't switch automatically, but that's not much hassle for a rare event.

My router does not have the mobile data circuitry to accept a SIM direct. I'd be surprised if that is not available for those who do not have access to a wired/fibre broadband connection.

Thank you, but I'm specifically looking for a router and don't want to use phone, iPad etc as hotspot.

Apart from this, look up TP Link TL-MR3020 - this does not have a built in SIM slot, but accepts USB Dongles from all major mobile service providers - this will give you the flexibility to change "ISP" based on signal strength/ data speed on the go.

Apart from this, open source router firmware like OpenWRT can get you the functionality to use the USB port on most common routers to accept GSM/ LTE dongles, but will need technical understanding - and tons of patience. Let me know if you're game

Re: On Wi-Fi & Routers

I am looking for a load balance + wireless router. I have 2 broadband connections at home to support my professional life.

I have searched the usual e-comm sites extensively and I have yet to come across a LB + wireless combo, but, I see them being available independently.

I welcome any guidance in this area.

My router does have some such capacity. It is an Asus RT-AC86U. Have had it a few years, don't know if it is still current.

Here's the support page for the function.

Looks like one of the WAN connections has to be via usb.
