I have been using (taking trials) with OVI maps on my E72 for few weeks now. Compared to Google Maps, OVI maps has two advantages - the compass, which orients the map towards north; and the second ofcourse is the fact that the maps are loaded in the MicroSD card - so no slow data transfers.

The map, IMHO, is not all that updated, but serves the purpose. Biggest pain in my back - my street in Besant Nagar has only one entrance / exit - the other end of the street is blocked for traffic for more than a decade or two - but any route the damn thing calculates takes me through the exit that is closed!

The real trial comes when I take it out of city - to Bangalore perhaps. I have been driving to Bangalore tons of times, yet do not know my way inside the city!!!

Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 are the only 2 devices added, dont expect N82 to be supported as this is not extended to other legacy devices which are based on S60 3.1 or older OS.

I have a 5800 Express music. The navigation works wonderfully well. Took some time for GPS connection the first time. but now it hooks up with satellite in less than 2 minutes. I like drive navigation more than walk navigation. Also instant information on the place desired is available, like fuel stations, shopping malls, restaurants etc.

Guys, Need your help !! On sunday I upgraded my Nokia 5800 firmware from 30.xx to 40.xxx. This is the latest firmware available for the 5800. Then I downloaded the India maps from the Nokia site using map download s/w and installed it on the phone. So far so good. Now this new firmware has navigation free for lifetime. When I select the destination and try to use "drive" navigation it draws the route and start voice guidance but then within a minute it asks for internet connection. If I say 'No' the navigation stops working and the default map mode with my position appears again. Do I need internet connection for the navigation to work? This happens with walk as well as drive navigation.

Could you please how did you upgrade to it and what are the new features.

Update: Guys, the Nokia maps that come with default 40.xxx version are not free. So I downloaded new Maps version from Nokia site and installed it. This version has lifetime navigation free. Today I was able to use drive navigation from my home to office and the route was pretty accurate. Once when I took a lane instead of main road, it automatically recalculated the new route. Also the GPS fix is faster than the previous firmware 30.xxx. I am loving every bit of my 5800

Firmware can be updated by navigating to menu > settings > phone > phone management > device updates and here, check for updates from the options menu.
After this, if you choose to upgrade, it will download the firmware from Nokia and then upgrade it.

My brother has OVI maps in his E72 (3 months old) and now Nokia is asking for money where as earlier they clearly stated maps are free.

My experience suggests Google Maps are far better. Even here a 'lock' takes time - my Nokia 5230. However, Google maps are usable. My son used them extensively to drive around Bangalore (or should it be Bengaluru!)

Better spend about Rs.7000-10,000 and get a proper GPS!

Is the free navigation applicable for Nokia 5233 also? Anybody using?
