I think the thread title could have been more generic - inclusive of all mail domains.

I use three - hotmail, gmail & y!
Hotmail and gmail - both are primary for me as I use them for different purposes.

My take on these three

Gmail
- easy on my eyes
- very few spam
- fantastic mobile version
- ofcourse, android integration
- this is ideal for keeping in touch with friends and cousins, subscriptions online and other sites. Generally used Where interactions are minimal.

Hotmail
- easy to manage. Very intuitive. I dont think any other mail domain matches this.
- I use it for all tracking required interactions like payments, banking, shopping etc
- no spam at all. So feel safe as well.
- very compelling for organised usage

Yahoo
- old one so continuing for contacts
- very bad spam control
- use it for all casual account logins in random sites which requires mail id
- used to be good in organizing mails but not anymore

re: Web Mail - your preference

I want to know what people mean when they get more spam in one service compared to other. Do you compare the number of spam mails that is received in the account or the no of spam mails getting into Inbox skipping the Spam/Junk folder.

Latter is the right comparison while former is a flawed one. Also, another factor that is important while comparing spam mails is how exposed is the email address to outside world? If you created an email id and never used it anywhere, you will never ever receive any spam on that email id.

Get my point?

Re: Web Mail - your preference

I registered myself for these email account not knowing the utility in the beginning of the dot com eras.
I have Yahoo, Gmail, rediffmail, hotmail all of the same user name.
Yahoo mail I used to get lot of junk which seems to be more or less settled now with less
of junk.
Hotmail was the most stable and even now without junk mails. Most of my proffesional
work is with this mail.
Rediff was the natural choice for a long time as it was quick to login and see the mails
recently too many junkies but still continuing.
Gmail this is something wonderful in the recent times due to easy login and the integration
to android made things easier and simpler.I have started clicking more pictures in my mobile and
no wiring required to transfer to my desktop. The dropbox integrating is excellent.
This becoming a private mail to me.

Re: Web Mail - your preference

I am using old Yahoo mail and it keeps on asking for upgrade.Once I upgraded one of my yahoo account and did not like the page. Finally by doing some setting gone back to old format only.

Now yahoo is forcing us to use new upgraded version.I am not able to search any old mails. If I search with some name or subject it automatically goes to reminder page of up gradation.Slowly disabling one by one options in old version.

It says the security was compromised in 2014.
Does the news stay relevant for today?

Yahoo made the announcement yesterday and it's all over the news - just google for Yahoo.

I got a mail today morning from Yahoo urging for a password change, which is what I did.

You might want to enter your usernames or email addresses in https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and check where else your credentials have been compromised and take necessary action.

Speaking as someone who has worked on security (and mostly webmail security) since the late 90s - please don't enter your email address and/or other details any random where that they ask you.

When you are in doubt -- change your password.

If it has been a few months since your last password change - change your password.

If your provider (gmail etc - and even more critical services such as your bank) offers two factor authentication such as a code sent to your mobile, or a software or hardware token that generates a one time pin - immediately enable it.

Re: Web Mail - your preference

Yahoo's spam filtering really sucks. I get around 10-15 mails everyday that should be marked as spam but they get delivered to my inbox. Are there any settings for better spam filtering in yahoo ? I could not find any.

Gmail works a lot better , I rarely get spam mails in my gmail inbox .

Yahoo's at a bit of a disadvantage here. The list of valid users on their service is out there. Plus they're in the process of being acquired - or maybe not - by Verizon - always a chaotic time for any corporation I guess.

But beyond that for any email address on a huge service it is a bit of luck of the draw as to which of your addresses you receive more spam on.

Keep clicking report spam on whatever spam gets to your inbox, that helps.

Bumping up the thread.

7 years on, Yahoo's spam filtering still sucks .

Also for the last couple of days, the domain yahoomail.com is not working.

I still use Yahoo mail extensively for all my financial accounts (banks, MFs etc). Is there any central KYC email id update I can do to my mail id, which will be propagated to all financial institutions?
