.

fuel, you are using iPad2, right?
Have you tried calling AAPL?

Guys, this question may have been asked before, but am still asking:

If I put a sim card in an iPad, and dial the num (of that sim card), what happens ?
Can I know the calling number ?

Yeah, your upgrade seems to be for iPad 1 as v1 does not have magnets inbuilt. Do not know why if your iPad is v2. Try upgrading the iOS or talk to apple.

In a jail broken one you can use it as phone and also hotspot (I so want this feature). In normal working it does not work, though I haven't tried the 3G yet still contemplating on what service provider to go with. Cheers!

I have seen close to 10 different cases for the iPad and each one claims to be unique in some way or the other. It's good to have multiple options besides the Apple smart cover.

Did you download and update to ios5 using itunes or did you download a file from a link and then updated using itunes?

Brother his has messages and thus it's a perfect indication of it being iOS 5. The only thing I confirmed is that in iPad 1 it does not show the option.

I do not recommend jailbreak but it's good fun to be free and experience what Apple prohibits. Just google it, you will find many YouTube videos and also write ups. Cheers!

No i understood that. But an issue could be that he downloaded the ios 5 version of ipad1 and not the one that was for ipad 2. In that case, smart cover lock/unlock feature will be missing from the ios 5 version in ipad 2.

I just connected the iPad to iTunes on my MacBook and upgraded to iOS 5. The device was running on 4.3. The upgrade was very smooth.

Yes I do have the iPad 2. It has the front and back cameras.

That wouldn't happen. The updater will check for device version. .ipsw have model versions in the name. Although that is not 100% confirmation but very good indicator of the presence of device checks within the ipsw's.

Ok here is the screenshot of the Settings-General-About section.

I also came across this link. http://webtrickz.com/ipad-cover-lock...ad-2-settings/

It says the option if missing will show up the first time you use a smart cover. I tried using a magnet to simulate the smart cover effect to see if it'll show the option. It didn't.

The only thing different from my ipad is that my model no. is MC769LL.

Did you put the magnet on the side of the ipad that has the volume buttons?

I got the option now. I placed a different magnet (one with a Ganesh idol) close to the volume switch and the screen went off. I also got the option under settings. Divine intervention perhaps;-). See below. The lock/unlock feature won't work for me though since I don't use a smart cover. Even if I add a magnet to my cover, it won't work since the sensor area is always covered due to the design of the case.

Thanks to all who provided inputs and advice.

I am planning to buy a iPad1, 3G, 16 GB to browse the net, use Google maps, read eBooks and play computer games with my kids. I have a Sony Vaio laptop. I find it heavy, bulky and cumbersome to carry around.

I want to request iPad1 owners for valuable inputs: -

1. Can I do all the things given above, and similar things, without any additional software?

2. What is the implication of iPad1 not having Java or Flash support? Does it affect the experience much?

3. What apps are very much essential? Are they available only on payment? Do I need to buy apps for doing routine tasks?

4. I read that iTunes are required to listen to music on iPad1. Does it mean that I can not transfer my music collection to iPad1 via usb? Does it have regular usb port?

5. Considering that I have never used any Apple device till now what other surprises should I be ready for?

Thanks.
