Manufacturers can decide on what tests to include, which lab to test etc. that is the reason why we see everything from ordinary glass sandwiche to the rugged phones like Kryocera all having the same certificattion. Doesn't mean they have the same durability.
Thanks for sharing the info about the process of certification. As biased as I am for Motorola (with good reasons), am pretty convinced that it is not a brand that is about futility or marketing gimmicks. Moto has always been through and through about R&D, innovation and patents and cutting edge technology that works even in extreme conditions, hostile environs or at home with same vigour in performance.

If Moto comes out with MIL STD, I notice, not so much or even remotely close to noticing when say Oppo does.

But surely an expert here can shed more light probably on how the MIL STD is done at Motorola.

Motorola Mobility LLC which manufacturers Android smartphones, is a subsidiary Lenovo. It is not the same company as Motorola Solutions, Inc which is the legal successor of the original Motorola company that makes walkie talkies and other communication devices.

Now the Motorola Edge 50 comes with Gorilla glass 5 display, IP68 water and dust resistance, a metal frame and vegan leather finished plastic back cover. The durability of this phone will be in line with other phones which share these specifications (maybe slightly less as the display of Edge 50 curves over the edges, which makes it more vulnerable to accidental drop). MIL-STD-810H certification is widely misused these days by phone and laptop manufacturers for marketing.

U.S. MIL-STD-810 is a flexible standard that allows users to tailor test methods to fit the application. As a result, a vendor's claims of "...compliance to U.S. MIL-STD-810..." can be misleading, because no commercial organization or agency certifies compliance, commercial vendors can create the test methods or approaches to fit their product. Suppliers can — and some do — take significant latitude with how they test their products, and how they report the test results. Consumers who require rugged products should verify which test methods that compliance is claimed against and which parameter limits were selected for testing.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIL-STD-810

I couldn't really find any information provided by Motorola on what tests they performed on Edge 50. At the end of the day, no company provides warranty against physical damage in the hands of consumer.

You may not have found info provided by the company but you can find some crazy people doing all sort of weird tests, though not scientific but still give some idea about the modern slim smartphones:

MIL-STD-810 certified Motorola:

MIL-STD-810 certified Oppo:

I agree that companies do not leave a chance to exploit all such certifications for marketing. These days automobile crash test have also turned into marketing gimmick for scoring more points over others, but still can not be completely ridiculed.

Motorola has more 5 models in the Edge 50 series, only one of them is marketed as MIL-STD-810H certified, so it must have gone through more more tortures than others in the line up. But this is not something extra-ordinary happening all of sudden.

Survival of modern smartphones during the torture is not surprising, its result of constant evolution over the period of time, doesn't matter if they have Military rated certification or not.

Most fragile part in a smartphone is it's display panel which used to be made of composites sandwiched under rigid glass panel in the past. We have been hearing about Gorilla Glass or similar protections over the main screen since long time. But these glass panels used to shatter because they were rigid and the broken sharp particles used to damage the main display panels.

Later Motorola (under Lenovo ownership) launched Moto Z2 Force with a display made of some non-glass composites. That was marketed as unbreakable, even if vehicle passes onto it. Motorola provided some sort of assurance of limited replacement in case of display pane is broken. This model did not have typical rigid Gorilla Glass protection. But there was a problem, the screen used to get scratched very quickly.

That technology later evolved into today's pOLED, where main display is made of some non-glass composites, its flexible enough to tolerate bends, pressure or usual drops. These panels now have Gorilla Glass or other equivalent protection to keep the surface smooth and scratch resistant but these modern protective glasses are flexible to some extend compared to yesteryear's rigid glass.

As seen in the above videos, the mobile screens still get damaged when unusual pressure is applied like crossing vehicles over them. But you can notice that the damage is not like the phones of the past where glass used to shatter and some particles used to come out of the screen.

I got surprised when my Pixel 6 equipped with pOLED survived during few drops straight on stones facing glass side during trekking. I have back case but no additional glass protection. Though these drops resulted into couple of deep scratches of short length, kind of small dents which I feel during finger movements.

I like the smooth feel of glass while touching and operating the phone so never used any additional protection over any of my mobile phone screens which eventually spoil the experience.

Putting any other protection over the factory protective glass also acts like installing additional bumper guards bolted on chassis which defeat the purpose of original car bumpers which are there to ensure effectiveness of the crumple zones and sensors to ensure the safety of the occupants.

Almost all manufactures follow similar process of manufacturing, using similar materials. But there are chances that they maybe skipping some or other tests in the hurry of launching millions of useless models every year.

Thats where we can be rest assured that if a mobile model has MIL certificate, it must have gone through all the typical tests in the factory and chances of survival are also usual if not any more, but an untested model can leave you surprised.

Whats leaves me disappointed is the battery, they haven't done anything good for the battery longevity and efficiency in the race of packing computer grade hardware in the small phones. Phones bought 6-7 years ago used to last much longer compared to toady's phones. How do we trust them for their claims of battery life getting longer in the EVs?

Motorola Inc was the company that was split into 1.) Motorola Solutions and 2.) Motorola Mobility. The former for enterprise side of businesses and the latter for consumer side.

Google then acquired Motorola Mobility and after a few years sold it to Lenovo.

The split and acquisitions were more or less about investor interests, patents and to have a clear division of separate businesses which were becoming hard to make sense with each other. The world was changing fast in the mobile phone consumer category and survival was difficult, unless the corporation upped its game and adapted.

We keep on hearing, for a decade now, that how Motorola is not the same Motorola as far as mobile phone manufacturing is concerned, with no thorough sources to bank upon which may provide insights to possible degradation of Motorola ethos or quality. And here is Motorola, continuously providing us with top Android experience, extremely good quality, rugged phones for every price point. Even their E series Android phones are fantastic for the target audience. They are so cheap, still so reliable. The introduction of G series took the mobile phone market by a positive shock.

As an end user of Moto phones for more than 2 decades, I do not remember buying a moto phone and cribbing about it. They were all great. Because I keep my phones for rough use, in environments too far from the comfortness of a home or an office, I have always felt peace of mind. Sand, dust, rain, snow, treks, drops on all sorts of surfaces, low battery, no battery, low signal, no signal, 2G, 5G, Motos have been a great companion. I have mostly stuck to 20k-30k price band since a decade as there is no point for me to break my wallet further than this owing to rough usage. I am more than happy with the phones so far. Mostly I keep two phones at a time and at any point my older phone has been at least 5 years old, serving flawlessly. Maybe I have just been lucky or maybe Motos are really great.

The more said about Motorola's mobile phone business, the innovation and legacy, the less. Has Lenovo ownership deteriorated Motorola philosophy is for some expert to comment upon

Comparing the MIL STD marketing or quality of a Moto to a Chinese phone, one should refrain from imho.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Motorola has a legacy of its own, and I owned the Motorola Razr way back in 2004 when flip phones were a thing in the market, back then it was a cool phone to have. But now Motorola's brand image doesn't live up to what it used to, especially after the Lenovo takeover, However, it still has quite a following and is available worldwide, including the US where their phones are selling well.

I admire the Motorola phones, especially their G series and Edge Series, I recently bought a Moto G45 and Moto Edge 50 Pro for a couple of members in my family and they are more than happy with their purchase. The Edge 50 Pro at under 30k is insane value with great cameras, charging, design, build and what not. The G45 at under 10k with its features and design is another winner as well, so yes Moto still makes great phones and I love them for that.

Motorola has been selling Linux based phones since 2003. They launched the A780.
Moto Razr flip phone still has cutting edge tech, the lastest version being really worth its value.

Their philosophy has never been towards marketing, rather about R&D, innovation and bringing new tech before others catch up.

The years when Motorola Inc was in losses and it was transitioning from a behemoth to a 2 entity split was the time when newer product launches or newer tech took a slower pace.

In India, they launched Rokr with Linux around 2005-06. It had a stylus and a person with geek mindset could use it and customise it a lot on his own. It was avaliable for around 10k INR. I hope I remember this correctly.

This is not my experience. I can get a full 48 hours out of my Moto. My previous Mi might have given 24-36 on a good day. And it's charging is much, much faster.

Over the years I have always been told that battery technology is a very slowly evolving science. But I see advances in practice.

Battery technology is indeed a slowly evolving science. I believe what you interpret as "advances in practice", has not much to do with the battery technology itself (which is still pretty much the same), but rather a comment on the overall package. The real major contributors to the duration of a charge are:

* The particular processor used in the phone.

* The implementation of the phone (including display, supporting electronics, heat dissipation, and so on).

* The OS and the apps used (among other things).

The fully charged battery is just the power source at a particular voltage, and has little control over how quickly it would be discharged. It's like a glass of drink (same kind and amount, for simplicity) served to persons at different tables. One may sip it leisurely in one hour, while another may glug it down in two seconds.

The Snapdragon 695 (which, I think, is in your Moto) is known to be a particularly frugal processor. I don't know what it was on your Mi, the design, the battery capacity, or its OS, or if you had used the same versions of the same apps on both phones. I believe making a fair comparison of the charge life is rather complex, even for you. In any case, I believe the batteries themselves (ignoring any capacity differential) had not much to do with the difference in the run time you observed.

Any battery technology improvements over the years would have minor contributions from the particular chemistry (some version of Lithium), and more in the associated electronics, and, perhaps, in the packaging too. Altogether it would still be a relatively minor contributor compared to the other factors discussed above.

From my personal experience, -- my 7 or 8 Android generations older Samsung with an older version of Exynos (and a ~3100 mAh battery) gave me ~2 days on a full charge when new. My new Android 14 Samsung (on Exynos 1380) with a ~6000 mAh battery still gives me ~2 days on a full charge (however, it has a larger screen at higher resolution running at double the refresh rate). The real problem with my new phone is, it is a functional brick, without actually having been 'bricked'.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Hi guys.
A very informative thread this one regarding all things Android phone related.

Hence I direct a query to you from someone I know who has been vigorously trying for this for a few months now scouring reddit and whatnot.

1. Is there a trustworthy way to acquire a Sony Xperia 1 VI in India? I don't have any relatives or friends who can bring it for me from overseas.

2. Can we expect Sony to launch this series in India anytime in the near future?

3. Suppose I do manage to get this phone somehow, what does maintaining it in India look like in terms of accessories/parts, warranty/service centre/repair support?

4. All things considered, would you suggest me to keep trying to get this phone or to look for alternatives.

TIA,
Regards.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Though I’ve moved to iPhone, I’ve always had and still own an android phone. But other than a few periods where I’ve had a S21 ultra and a Redmi k20 pro, it’s always been nexus, pixel or light skins like Oneplus where the phone continues to be fast. My mother has always had a Mi phone and I thought at her age, is best not to mess with things and as a result, she’s been using various redmi phones. Recently she complained about various warning messages, some app not working and when I took a look, it is an absolute nightmare of a mess.

I’ve now decided to transfer her to a pixel. IMO for an older person, the only phone they should be using is pixel or iPhone. Anything else is just way too complicated.

I know I am becoming a tech dinosaur but anybody knows whether Android 14 update will come to Samsung S20 FE. It is currently Android 13. Is there any place to check this type of information?

It appears S20FE topped out at 13. No further OS updates.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Anybody in the forum has been using a flip phone (Samsung/Moto/others) as part of a two phone set up ? I am mulling over an option to have a flip phone as a primary device for pocketable convenience and my present Vivo x100 Pro as a camera centric device. Carrying one and a half phone is better than carrying two. Ideally, I would like it to be an iPhone flip and an Android secondary, but for now, a flagship Android flip phone would do.
Was wondering, how such an arrangement has worked out for other BHPians, if at all.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Pixel 8 was available at Flipkart for a few days at 45% discount, making even the 256gb version "affordable" at around 45k. I resisted the temptation, plus I still find it very hard to spend even that much on a phone!

Maybe next time. Maybe.

When is the Pixel 10 due?
