Can you please confirm if your Pixel 4a was in the 'eligible device' list for the battery replacement program and it was just a coincidence that you walked in with it without knowing about this?

Because when I checked on the google repair program link for the 'eligible devices', my 4a doesn't fall in the 'affected' phones list. Does that mean that I cannot get this free battery replaced?

I did get this update done a week back on my phone and there isn't any appreciable difference in the battery performance per se. So I'm not sure what exactly does this software update does to affect the battery.

I'd gone in hoping they'll agree to replace the battery for maybe a few thousand rupees, and I'll be able to get some more use out of my otherwise perfectly good phone.

They didn't specifically mention the replacement program either, just that the swap would be free of cost. I only found out about the program a week or two later when I got an email from Google about it, and someone mentioned it here.

The update didn't come with a specific changelog, so I'm not sure what exactly it did either.

You can still call the Google Support line (or your local authorised repair centre) with your IMEI and double check eligibility.

I think his question to you is to check the below link and see if it says your phone is/was eligible for the replacement. I’m curious too - coz the folks I know (including my wife) with a pixel 4a; their phones aren’t eligible as per the link.

That link was included in the email notification from Google. My phone's IMEI was 'eligible'.

That’s correct. This is exactly my question.

Since this a widespread issue, I’m pretty sure Google will tackle it smartly and will not just randomly replace batteries of the phones that come to their SC.

Is your device running on Android?

If so, would you be open to sideloading an APK?

Google Drive includes a built-in PDF viewer, pdf viewer has been extracted as apk.
this apk can be downloaded in apkmirror.com link here

This is simplest pdf viewer that should meet your needs.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I had shifted from iOS to Android sometimes back in August 2024.

Reason for switch

- Was facing some network issue

- Some Apps were not working / not available on Play Store and was forced to carry 2 devices everywhere (I still carry 2 devices, but not everywhere).

I wanted to buy something small again (was using an iPhone 13), but poor choice of chipset for Samsung S24 and small battery size made me buy the S24 Ultra. Initially, I was very happy, but down the line, holding the device (have decently sized palm / hands) was a chore, typing out replies was always a 2 handed affair. Plus, somehow, the battery on iPhone used to last me more than that of the S24 Ultra.

Always be ware of the size you are shifting to, if you are used to a smaller form factor, these phablets will bother you in few months.

Started looking for options and came across Pixel devices (I initially referred it as Nexus as I had Nexus back in 2013 IIRC). Very happy with the size, battery and overall feel, as Mod vb_saan points out, it is the iPhone in the Android world.

Thad, Not sure if you got the answer. I did not understand the "apps are doing other things part".

In any case, browsers like Google chrome and Edge have integrated PDF viewers which can help with your use case.

If you have other apps getting in your way, try disabling or uninstalling them.

Oh... stuff. Like wanting to manage my pdf files. Oh, and telling me "welcome back Thad." (That's Adobe)

I prefer to avoid both, and I prefer to open a PDF in another application. I know, I am a difficult customer!

Absolutely Adobe is getting the boot soon!

!

Thad - Not sure if you found a solution yet. These days it's all about cramming in a lot of features into one single app and most of the features aren't even in the local storage but is loaded from the cloud as you go.

Getting back to the topic - As @RaghuHolla mentioned, you can try the Google PDF viewer. They discontinued it in 2020 and merged it with Google Drive.

You can find some APKs in the internet which you can sideload.

I tried one such version and it gave me an error stating it wasn't compatible with Android 15.

Probably the only option you have

Having installed and uninstalled a couple (including from F-Drive, so outside the Google Play World), when opening a PDF today, I was asked which app to use. I noticed Drive on the list, and picked it. Ok, ok, it's more Google, but hey, even Android is, and no, I don't spurn the usual Google apps.

The Drive PDF reader seems to be just what I want! So I'll stick with that that for now.

Thanks to RaghuHolla.

This is for quick reading/printing of short documents. If I have a whole book to read, I'd use a book-reader app.

Reading your comments, something tells me you don't want the evergreen background data collection and all the whims of the Adobe and most other commercial apps. Just like me in a way. Alright then, I'll list a few solutions.

1. Install DocScanner.
When you click on a pdf, choose to open it using DocScanner's shortcut which says "PDF Viewer/ Tools", then you'll see a very basic app with around 5 options including print.
Now, if you want to disable the internet entirely, install another free app "NetGuard".
This Netguard uses a VPN feature on Android phones to control apps' access to internet. Which means:- If you want 1 app to access internet but not the other, you can choose so, appwise. Don't worry, no actual VPN is used or accessed, its an open source, verified app. Docscanner needs no internet to work.

2. If view is all you want, in a lightweight app, then MuPDF is what you'd want, except it has no print option, just view.
To the best of my knowledge, it has no internet permission or use.

Get it from Maxbhi. So far, maxbhi has been reliable for me.

Android feature, yes, but are you sure that all phones can actually do this? How can an Android phone without USB 3.1 achieve this screen output? Suppose a phone has USB 2.0, it can't output such a detail heavy video stream at all.

I tried my Redmi note 7 Pro, it didn't work. Pen drive, keyboard and mouse is all that works in its USB OTG.
My LG G8x, S20 FE worked, but a midrange phone in the office didn't work.
Similarly, tried some low enders, all failed.
Ultimately, I checked a lot back then and concluded that the phone must have USB 3.x for it to work. This was around 2 years back, and I don't remember everything, but this was the gist of it.

Thank you! I did look at MuPDF, and note the lack of printing.

As I have already sold my soul to Google, one more app, which is installed anyway, can't do any more harm. I was surprised not to find many more PDF readers on F-Droid. But anyway, I'm fixed up for now.

It's hardly a daily event. And more often than not, it is my wife who says, "I've sent you a document, please print it." One day, I must show her that she's on the same network, with the same access to the same printer. But hey, why hasten redundancy!

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

After my 6 months stint with Pixel 7 Pro decided to shift to S25 Ultra.

The need:

Pixel 7 Pro is a decent device. Get 95% of my tasks done without any hiccups. It never hangs, software experience is a pure joy. The issue is with half baked processor, Tensor G2 chip heats a lot. Imagine using instagram for 10 mins and the back starts to warm up. Random call drops is another reason. Any video calls beyond 15 mins was unbearable.

S25 Ultra was a no brainer to me. I used Note 20 ultra for 3 years and I am well versed with One UI. Went ahead with the pre-launch offer and booked it even before the reviews came out.

512 GB variant at the cost of 256 GB is a great deal.
Exchange on old mobile 22k (done in colab with Cashify by Samsung).
HDFC no cost EMI discount 7k.

Color choice initially picked up black, but my previous Note 20 Ultra was also a black one, then changed to green. This year Samsung went with very sober colours.

Placed order on 25th Jan I think (directly on Samsung website) and got it delivered on Feb 2nd. A day before delivery I ordered a Spigen QI2 compatible magnetic case and a 45 watts Samsung charger from Amazon along with a 360 degree protection screen guard.

After delivery was done, I connected cable to my Pixel and installed Samsung smart switch app. All data, apps were transferred to new phone within 10 mins. The Cashify pickup person visited on 4th Feb and took the old device. I got the amount transferred to my bank account at the same time.

I will not go in to any specifications, it has the best out there.

Day to day usage is no different from a Note 20 Ultra. My initial 1 week observations below
  • One UI 7 is smooth, a bit of IOS rip off.
  • Never once did it heats up.
  • I start using mobile early morning 6:30 and do have a lot screen time in trading apps till market closure, battery at 11:30 PM is still above 50%.
  • One hand usage is not possible.
  • Cameras are not the best (compared to Vivo X200 Pro), but better than the rest.
  • Not even once used any AI features, still not finding any reason to use them.

Should you upgrade from a S23 or S24 Ultra - A big no. Wait for couple more years.

Note: Many are facing Andoird Auto connection issue on this momobilea quick Google search revealedbelow fix. I also faced this issue and the below fix has worked.

Quote:
On cell phone S25Ultra

Cleared Cache, cleared data

Turned of Auto blocker in settings under security and Privacy

Cleared previously connected cars.

Bought a new data cable (just to be sure.)

ON the car side

Restarted car's infotainment unit .

in smartphone settings chose Android Auto

"Disabled" previous connected phone (my note 20 ultra)

"Enabled" unknown connected device (Now is being shown my s25ultra)

Turned off my phone's Wi-Fi (was trying to connect in my drive way and felt it was a problem)

Connected my phone to car's USB port.

It took some time to connect (saying finding Bluetooth, even though phone was already paired).

Android auto was then connected and worked fine since then.
