re: Fiat's India strategy revealed

FIAT's November 2014 car sales stands at:

Punto Evo + Avventura: 616
Linea: 144
Total: 760

Position in Indian car industry - Last (After Skoda - 1172 units). Am discounting small players like HM-Mitsubishi.

Unless FIAT wakes up and smells the coffee, it doesn't bode well. Linea refresh was a dud. Punto Evo didn't manage much increase in sales. The promising Avventura hasn't yet taken off.

Unless FIAT launces promising products under the Rs 10 lakhs price range and more importantly in the hatchback segment with volume sale - the future looks bleak. Just can't understand, what is stopping them from bringing vehicles like the popular & successful Panda.

In Europe, Panda and Punto cost almost the same. Then they should cost the same India too. Why would an Indian common man buy a smaller Panda? Space is everything for most Indians!

When Mr. Enrico Atanasio was leading Fiat India, he seemed quite aggressive. He had many plans for India. But within two years, he was replaced with Mr. Nagesh Basavanhalli. Mr. Nagesh seems to be of quite opposite character, he seems slow and steady, and taking up one task at a time.

Unfortunately, he is too slow for rapidly evolving Indian market. At one point, an Indian car model could go on for 5-6 years without any facelift and still maintain decent sales. But now, it becomes outdated within 2-3 years.

Right now, Fiat India is busy with Abarth. Then it will get busy with Jeep. By the time Fiat India concentrates on mass market segments again, all-new Linea will have completed a couple of years in Turkish market and European Punto replacement (500L) will be at the end of its lifecycle!

Producing Panda with high levels of localisation, but without 4WD gear, can be a competitive product.

Very disappointing. Avventura had 500 bookings at the end of October, have they still not delivered those or has it cannibalized Evo? .

Can't understand their product & marketing strategy which is clearly misfiring.
Linea sales dropped with so called upgraded launch, Punto sales dropped with upgrade & Avventura launch, not sure how many booking/sales Avventura has managed.

They should have launched updated Linea with 1.6 MJD, Avventura before Evo with T-Jet and Punto with new interiors only and probably T-Jet.

So it could be this then, the Compass. They have a starting price of $18,000 in US,or around 10L.I guess in India it might be 16-18L.

No. It has to be the current generation Jeep Cherokee with the 2L MJD, which is available in Europe. Compass is at the end of its lifecycle. As far as I know, Compass doesn't have a Fiat engine in it (it's either Volkswagen or Mercedes Benz engine, I don't remember).

http://www.jeep.co.uk/cherokee-2014/

Cherokee comes with the 2L Multijet II in UK. Since Zauba shows this as UK import- I guess this is the relevant model.

Understand that Wrangler would be initially offered as CBUs. Any idea about the expected price point?

PS - Sorry if pricing has already been discussed in the thread. I was unable to locate it.

re: Fiat's India strategy revealed

Fiat really needs to bring in some models with 1.6 and 2.0 ltr diesel engines. The 1.3 mjd is beginning to get really boring now. But on a positive front, the 1.3 of late (post 2012) also seems very reliable. Eats up miles like anything, without missing a beat, and there is not a lot with it that can go wrong. But the time has come to start making a change into bigger or better engines.

Now the funny thing that is happening here is that after a lot of hype and whine on how 1.5< engines would have excise concession and fiat trying to copy VW to cut down the stroke on 1.6 mjd things are back to square one by govt totally doing away with excise concessions altogether.

Is this why Nagesh Basavanahalli was on the chopping block. Failure to see what was coming and thus companies like Maruti which had planned models around 1.6 having to shelve plans ??

Is this true? I was under the impression that only excise concession given last year was withdrawn. But still different excise duty slabs based on length of car and engine capacity was continuing.

Are you sure about this? If this is indeed the case, then we will finally see decent sized engines with adequate power and torque capabilities.
