Bad month for Mahindra it seems. Their passenger car/SUV sales down to 15K levels. Eager to see TML figure. Is it falling further?

Re: June 2013 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

What is the love with year on year figures, isn't month on month more relevant. Aren't variables more on yearly basis then a monthly basis. For eg. take the ecosport for example, last year it did not exist so all year on year sales will be positive but say it sold 100 units in month 1 and 120 units in month 2 a 20% increase and 80 units in month 3 a -33.3% decrease. Wouldn't as a company I would be more concerned with monthly figures then.

Can someone explain

First of all, I want to start off with a disclaimer, this is my personal opinion and I dont think there are any rules barring month on month analysis.

1. Usually planning for the functions ( Sales, Inventory, Operations,..)in a company follow the AOP ( Annual Operating Plan) method, which by definition is an Annual plan.

2. Sales Targets are set during this process of AOP and are based on the sales figure of a previous year with a growth target and further distilled through the Company -> SBG -> LOB -> Product Line -> Product group -> Product hierarchy.

3. Further , the AOP is then broken into Quarterly targets and eventually monthly targets

4. Bear in mind , there are cyclical businesses ( which implies that there will be troughs and crests in the business cycles dictated by numerous factors such as monsoon, festive season, tax filing etc etc)

4. So, when management assess the performance of a product , the usual practice is review the performance of sales over the same period year on year

5. This will be sensible because you are now comparing oranges to oranges in term of negating seasonal biases as well as reviewing the performance against the set growth target.

Hope you get the gist, there is nothing that bars anyone to review month on month for the same year. It all depends on the company's sales review policies and the business they are in.

His tweet doesn't mention ecosport at all. I think it's the sum of all cars sold.

Thats huge nos.
Do they have this big capacity?

I guess they had manufactured good nos even before launch which are being shipped now.

Great going Ford.

First tweet explicitly mentioned "Ecosport". He later corrected it to "total sales". So, 12334 is total Ford sales. I wonder what is the share of Ecosport.

This is because of buying patterns - festive season, year end, financial year ending, etc. All these reasons are important factors when people buy cars and hence it would be incorrect to compare month on month.

For eg, April sales will always be less than March of every year and December will always be lower than November. Thus it makes sense to compare it to the same time the previous year. In case of new models you do get the low base effect which make for great headlines - Case in point is Renault sales after the Duster launch.

50% drop from previous month for duster (june fig as per page 1 is 4523). Is the starting of the decline phase of duster hype cycle? . It seems XUV is reaching its bottom.

Duster's volume reduction reflect more on the market conditions, though a bit could be due to the 'hyped' launch of the Ecosport.
Interesting to see if the Ecosport could sustain the initial reported numbers and also should see how it is cannibalising the Figo numbers!

Cheers!

Re: June 2013 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

An article in NDTV mentions that Ford has sold 7867 units in India and 4471 units for export in July. No breakup of the sales was mentioned. June sales was 7145 and so the sales is up only marginally.
