Rest assured the duster is a pretty well built car.

Whats the source for your info?
You are right, the Duster is a well built car.
Are you sure it the audible seat belt reminder that makes the vehicle lose 1-point/ star for safety.

Please refer this:

http://www.euroncap.com/results/daci.../2011/421.aspx

It clearly states few critical areas under:
Quote:
Adult occupant
in the frontal impact but the rear (luggage compartment) door opened during the test and the car was penalised.
Protection of the chest was rated as marginal for both front seat occupants, based on dummy readings of chest compression.
In the side barrier impact, the driver's door opened and the car was penalised. No doors opened in the more severe side pole impact but protection of the driver's chest was rated.
Protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision was rated as marginal.

Child occupant
The car scored maximum points for its protection of the 18 month dummy in the dynamic tests.

Pedestrian
Neither the bumper nor the front edge of the bonnet scored any points, offering poor protection to pedestrians' legs.

Safety assist
Electronic stability control is available as an option on the Duster but did not qualify for assessment. A seatbelt reminder is standard equipment for the driver's seat. A seatbelt reminder for the front passenger seat is expected by Dacia to be standard equipment in nearly all sales of the Duster, and the system met Euro NCAP's requirements.
It is clear that for low front passenger & pedestrian (in case of an accident) safety ratings, the car has scored low.

As against this, XUV500 lost one point (it scored 4-stars) for this:

Quote:
Protection from serious leg injury was poor for the driver due to excessive rearward movement of the brake pedal.
Both the cars are more less the same, with XUV500, being marginally better on basis of safety ratings.

However, my comment on preferring the latter was on account of wider & cheaper A.S.S., bigger capacity (can carry 7-8) & positive support from the company to the owners. Renault-Nissan alliance have to go a long way in this regard IMO.

Re: Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

The Terrano - from the photographs atleast, seems to address the Duster's biggest complaint: interior quality (needs to be confirmed in real-life though). It also looks a little less quirky than the Duster, and more mature.

The 6-speed gearbox in this display vehicle certainly confirms the 110 bhp engine. It remains to be seen whether the 85 bhp engine will be offered.

Considering the above, and in the post-Ecosport world, the only factor that will kill the Terrano is pricing alone. Lets hope Nissan has its ears to the ground and understands this clearly, since the Indian market is entirely unforgiving to a product that was badly priced during launch.

Re: Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

Couldn't understand the strategy of Nissan/Renault partnership. Selling same type of vehicles with hardly any differences. What would influence a buyer to choose between Duster and Terrano? Somebody explain.

Co-branding will help with lower production costs, and use each others technology. It is also to play with the mindset of the consumers and give a vast choice. Now think of Duster, you have 8 variants from Renault and 6 from Nissan. Total 14 variants covering a large range of budget and features.

Having two brands will also help with attacking different market segment with same product.

Example: Scala goes as premium car and Sunny is for mass market.
Now the scheme reverses for Duster.

But then, the price difference is also because, Micra and Sunny are Nissan products so Renault is bound to come up with product that is priced higher.
For Duster it is Renault product so Nissan needs to sell at a higher price so the changes to position at a higher price.

Just my 2¢

Re: Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

BTW what exactly is the pricing clause in the Nissan-Renault agreement? Is the price to be considered is the original launch price or the current market price at the time of the launch of the second product ( Nissan Terrano in this case)? Becasue if its the former then it gives Nissan some breathing room to price there car little competitively. If its the latter then what is to ensure that the price difference is maintained? For instance if Renault decided to increase the prices of Duster by 1L then that would place it slightly more costlier than the Terrano ( assuming that Nissan Terrano is currently launched at a premium of 50k over the Duster). So in that scenario does Nissan need to accordingly increase the price of its product too to maintain the price differential?

Re: Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

It's pretty stupid of nissan to not include steering mounted controls. In fact, seeing as this is basically an overpriced duster anyway, they should've included bluetooth controls too. Even the center console in general looks quite spartan.
Other than the similarity to the duster, viewed separately, the terrano is a pretty appealing vehicle, especially from the front. It doesn't feel any bit premium though, which the duster does, given the price range.
In my opinion, nissan would do much better in india if they stopped beating around the bush with cheap cars and brought in their big guns like the Altima and Pathfinder. Don't tell me most of you don't agree. :P

A very valid question that they will never give out in open, so we can only infer.

Actually even more than say Renault increasing the pricing if say it is going at about 1L effective discount now or say 3 months down the line will Nissan too be allowed to drop the Terrano pricing? that would be a more realistic question. (Yep inspite of the impact of USD exchange rise.)

The Pricing policy actually makes the Terrano quite redundant, at a time when it needed to come in a 1L less than the Renault to do decent numbers it is being projected to be about 50 k more expensive. I does look more premium on the outside but the interiors are as bland as in the Duster and the feature list actually misses out on the stalk mounted audio controls.

Read it in one of the autocar magazines abroad, but a quick google search comes up with this(not sure how to embed):

4:40 mark

Here is the euroncap official website result:

@superdunkaroos
That's good reference. In crash tests, Duster got 4 Stars for Adult safety and 5 stars for child protection.

And these stars are calculated on features of base version. The reviewer says the features on which the stars were lost are standard on higher version.

Air bags are standard in Europe so it's a mix bag for India. IMO; if it sells like hot cake in Europe then it sure is built well.

Re: Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

Look forward to test drive Nissan Terrano. Looks bold from all direction. The interior certainly looks cool. This would be one I like to consider for my next buy as I was evaluating between Ford Ecosport vs. Duster.

Why can't Nissan care about these minute aspects that's gonna win negative publicity for the car?

Overall, the car at least looks premium and good both external and internal. Far better than its quirky French Bro'. Design is clean, sharp unlike the clumsy feel of Duster. How I wish this was launched with better pricing.

To me, the wheel caps shown in Autocar is better looking than the alloys itself. One of the best looking wheel caps out there.

The thread says dont know if there will be a petrol Terrano but Autocar first look video (in HD!) was with a petrol variant.
Hi,

Actually the dust was a marketing gimmick. This vehicle being more expensive than the Duster they wanted to make it Dust-ier. Maybe they should have called it the Nissan Dustier. After this they may plan a Datsun Dustiest

But seriously why would someone pay extra for the Terrano over the Duster which is already established?

Cheers!

Will know in a few days. Booking starts on 1st Sept.
I am sure they will do decent numbers and eat into Renault's share.
Renault will still be happy about it
