Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

Mod Note: Team-BHP's Official Nissan Terrano Review is live at this link. Please continue the discussion over in the review thread.

Thanks!

Nissan has today unveiled its compact SUV, the Terrano, which will compete with the Ford EcoSport and the brand engineered cousin - Renault Duster.

The Terrano is mechanically identical to the Duster. Thus, to know how it drives, refer to our Official Review.

(Please note this was just an unveiling event; pricing & specifications haven't been shared yet)

High Points:
  • Pre-bookings will begin from 1st September, at an assured sub-10 lakh price tag. Official launch in the 1st week of October. Deliveries to commence by or before Diwali (3rd November).
  • This will be the 4th generation Terrano, originally launched by Nissan in 1986. However, this particular generation is India specific.
  • Nissan quotes that the Terrano has design cues from the Pathfinder & Patrol SUVs; but we all know there is more of the Duster in it.
  • This will be Nissan's 4th offering locally produced from the Oragadam plant after the Micra, Sunny & Evalia.
  • Nissan currently has 100 operational dealerships and is working towards increasing this number to 300 by 2016.
  • Nissan also plans to have a total of 10 cars in it's line up by 2016, including the Datsun branded models.

The front is very noticeably different from the Duster. Unlike the other brand engineered cars sold by Renault-Nissan.

The side profile however looks very much Duster like.

The rear profile has been redesigned too for visual differentiation.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano003.jpg

Twin barrel headlamps are differently shaped than the round barrels seen on the Duster. Also, these have black inserts.

Recessed fog lamp housing. Tow hook seen below.

Grille looks in sync with other Nissan SUVs. (Example: X-Trail, Pathfinder)
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano006.jpg

Big defining wheel arches have been retained by Nissan.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano007.jpg

Parking sensors seen on the XV variant. A smaller chrome strip when compared to the Duster's embossed one. This one is bearable, with the nomenclature at the bottom left of the boot-lid.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano008.jpg

Rear combination lamps have a different shape altogether.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano009.jpg

Silver accents on the lower end of the bumper, reflectors on either side.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano010.jpg

16" machine finished alloy wheels.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano011.jpg

Diesel variant on display, we are not sure if Nissan will bring in the petrol variant to the market. The Duster is the car with the highest preference for diesel as per our monthly sales data.

re: Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October

Interiors:

Dashboard is visually different from the Duster's unit, apart from the instrument cluster.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano018.jpg

Audio controls are absent! (The Duster gets a short stalk for controlling audio). Silver accents on the horn pad are not very pleasing to the eye.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano019.jpg

Instrument cluster is identical to the Duster.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano020.jpg

Center console is similar to the Duster, apart from the piano black finish & a different head unit.

A closer look at the head unit, boasts Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in, CD & FM.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano022.jpg

Air vents are rectangular and get chrome surrounds. Small storage bin above.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano023.jpg

Gear stalk identical to the Duster.
Nissan Terrano Unveiled : To be launched in early October-nissan-terrano024.jpg

Leather seats provided. The seat adjustment levers look too short on both the Terrano and the Duster.

Driver seat lumbar support adjustment at a very hard-to-reach spot.

Re: Nissan's Duster-based SUV, the Terrano: Full Pics are out!

The vehicle definetly looks good and has a butch front end. But at this price point, I am wondering who could be the target segment ? Will some of the 4000 odd per month Scorpio buyers consider this ? ( me thinks YES )

I like the looks of this car and the interiors too..
The only-diesel rumor turned out to be only a rumor.
But the saddest part of the story may be that the SUV looks to be over-priced in the post-EcoSport market and will struggle to pull in 1500 + sales a month.

Maybe Duster will get 4x4 now to keep it in play?
They should have updated Duster to this and discontinued Duster. I really dont know how Ecosport and Duster are comparable even though Duster and now Nissan might be a little expensive.

Only if Renault had not gotten greedy and priced the duster exhorbitantly :( This is a beautiful car and would suffer for no fault of its own. I am feeling sad for Nissan; Ford, take a bow! You have changed the market dynamics altogether From Mahindra, Maruti, Renault, Nissan, and other players, you have taught them a few lessons. Only threat to the Ecosport would be Hyundai Mini - SUV as it would be equally feature rich.

Re: Nissan's Duster-based SUV, the Terrano: Full Pics are out!

Love the looks! The interiors in pictures look a notch above the Duster but are still basic. Couple of questions/open areas:
1. Is Nissan fixing the ergonomics?
2. Is Nissan fixing the build quality? Its not about next level of fabrics or plastics. Its about putting the it all together solidly to avoid rattles/squeaks 12mths from the purchase?
3. What features are standard above a comparative Duster trim? Or will we be charged a premium just for the Nissan family look?
4. Is Nissan making any changes to the way the car is tuned in terms of performance?

And those alloys look absolutely smashing. I'm going to try and swap the ones on my Ecosport with those!

Re: Nissan's Duster-based SUV, the Terrano: Full Pics are out!

The car looks dashing, way better than the Duster. Its a beautiful car, though the interiors are still basic with manual ac etc, the interior layout looks better than Duster. Alloys are the best ones on any car upto 15 lakhs.

Duster is already priced high and with Terrano selling at a premium to Duster, i dont think it would set sales charts on fire, there is nothing Nissan can do about it, wish Renault reduced Duster's price and then Nissan could price this car accordingly.

When Rapid launched, people thought it would kill Vento but the Vento still sells twice the Rapid because VW has a better brand image and the interiors + features are more than Rapid, people are willing to pay the premium. Nissan has better image than Renault and if they can throw in some features like auto ac or push button start, it can sell well.

On an another note, i will stick with my Ecosport booking

As a Scorpio Owner for the past 5 years and in the market for a change now and fence sitting for the last 6 months with:

Duster: Rejected on looks front
Ecosport: Too small
Fortuner & Rexton : No VFM

XUV 5OO: Almost on the verge of buying but holding on account of

Terrano : Hope it looks better than Duster
Korendo : Still no news on the India launch

Re: Nissan's Duster-based SUV, the Terrano: Full Pics are out!

Image from "Overdrive" - that a/c thingy killing the rear leg room for middle passenger still exists?

Also, quoting from the same report:
Quote:
Besides, that everything from the Duster remains the same, although Nissan has ditched those clever audio controls that are mounted behind the wheel on the Renault.
So if those clever audio controls have been ditched, is there a replacement? Cause i don't see it in the pics. Maybe it isn't the variant that has steering mounted audio controls.

I'm really not sure now that 70k premium gets you much.

More pix. Hope it looks better on road. Could have given it a better alloy. The rear light treatment is better unlike half baked ones in Duster.

Re: Nissan's Duster-based SUV, the Terrano: Full Pics are out!

The Terrano actually looks a lot more premium than the dated Duster.

I'm just guessing that this is going to be priced a shade below or exactly the same as Duster (Read EcoSport effect). That would make this much more value for money than the Duster. If its going to be 50K more than the Duster, as expected by most, Nissan can only eat into Duster's numbers. But cannot create the "BLOCKBUSTER" effect.

They still have not changed the door handles. Its still the same as Duster. They should have changed it to those pull type handles with body coloured finish.
