August 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Management Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: August 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I would like to add to the statistics with figures for segment-wise market share over a period of last month, 3 months and 6 months. These numbers give a fair picture of each vehicles market share within its own segment and whether they are gaining or losing.

Segmentation might not be perfect but I have done it to the best of my knowledge. I have left out some vehicles that have negligible impact in overall market share. Have also highlighted (in yellow) top 10 sellers for each month over the past six months. Plus one can see the segment-wise total sales trend over the past six months (horizontal colour-scale). Hope this is helpful.

Its production was on halt for August, as the production plant was being moved to a different location.

Re: August 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Except for the Top 4 - Alto, Dzire, Swift and WagonR all other models are showing weakness, a reflection of the economy perhaps.

Growth if any is coming from new models or production lags as in the case of Amaze.

The SUV/MUV's seem to be holding their positions as they address multiple market segments. The Innovva, Duster/Terrano, Fortuner & Ecosport continue to do well despite these models being in the market for some time. Interesting to see the initial impact of the Duster AWD

Cheers

Zest has the highest numbers in Tata's stable. It a good start. Let's wait and watch for its futute. Storme is waiting for the upgrade, I believe.

Re: August 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for the most awaited thread!

Innova going strong. No matter Ertiga or Mobilio.
What catches my fancy is, Dzire remains unabated despite the inflow of Amaze and Xcent. Consistently performing 17-20 K per month. Amaze and Xcent together manage close to 15K (albeit this month Amaze sales are high) Which sales they are affecting?

Or has the market expanded for these cramped, ungainly compact sedan(!)s?

No offence meant. Indian roads are becoming a weird place for homing the sub 4m sedans. Not a very pleasant sight to a connoisseur.

Read in another thread the only Fiat showroom of Kolkata shuts down. New launches notwithstanding?

Zest 2K+ numbers despatch seem to be on lower side. Capacity constraints? I thought all Tata plants operate at half their rated capacity.

Re: August 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Was expecting better numbers from Tata. I mean only 2671 Zest shipped? they have 10K+ bookings and IMO significant nos should have been produced by now. Aria seems to be improving though nos are small.

As expected good opening month for Ei20.

Good to see Punto Evo nos as well & hope they can sustain these nos.

It seems Thar is produced once a quarter.

Edit:
@ jessie007 from where have you got Thar nos. Original chart shows zero for june, july & aug.

This fall can be attributed to shifting of production of City to Tapukara facility in Rajasthan.

Considering the pricing of the Zest and the image of Tata in the customers, the Zest sales will settle down at 3k per month, after the initial small peaks.

Tata should have priced it lower as an introductory offer. This opinion I had expressed in the zest thread even before the pricing announcement by tata.

If customers are to be attracted to zest showrooms and take decision to buy zest, in spite of the present image of tata, at least one lakh rupees difference in pricing is required with maruti, honda and hyundai. I really do not understand why Tata management is unable to read the mind of customers. Being an indian manufacturer, tata deserve more encouragement in sales. But, market study department fails every time. At the same time, I highly appreciate the design and production department for the excellence of the zest.

Re: August 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Almost everyone i know is buying the Grand i10 or Polo or Amaze or Xcent etc & i fail to understand who is still buying the Swift & Dzire? Always stumps me

Honda is on a roll in India (Same case in two wheelers too with Hero Moto facing the heat). Imagine another 6000 Honda City's added to the count soon & they are inching closer to the Hyundai coveted 2nd spot (The Jazz, Diesel Brio & a good compact SUV will help them take the fight to the next level). Come on Honda
