re: Scoop: Honda Civic spotted testing in India! Edit: Launched @ 17.69 lakhs

Having extensively driven my in-laws’ 2008 Civic AT, I was in awe of the futuristic looks, tech (paddle shifters) and the sheer reliability of that car. Of course, the low-end sucked and even in those days, the Laura petrol was a much faster car - but it looked like a dork in comparison with hardly any features.

A decade has passed and the Civic still has the same power and torque. The Octavia is now feature loaded and has a much superior engine + driving experience, both in petrol and diesel. The Octavia RS – it’s an insult to even mention it in the same sentence as the Civic 1.8.

Ignoring diesels for a minute, if only they had a 1.5 T and a 2.0 T to compete with a 1.8T and the RS, I guess enthusiasts could really switch. Right now, it’ll just eat up the Elantra and Corolla non-taxi segment sale. This also makes Skoda look great in my eyes – thank you for bringing us starved enthusiasts contemporary options and a range of engines!

They already have their 1.5 and upwards turbo petrols in other markets. Just not for us Indians...

I'm guessing all other creature comforts would remain the same, and the Octavia is pretty decently equipped, and does have all the other features that you mentioned.

Just curious. I'm a civic fan myself, but can't help compare this new launch with the existing Octavia.
Bro, the aftersales stories spook away buyers more than anything else and specially when it will be driven by dad too the japanese peace of mind surpasses everything else. Also the Octavia with DSG might be fast and much more refined, the looks to me appear understated compared to the new Civic. And also, Octavia might be fast but the Civic looks faster

Yes, and very well acclaimed too, with perhaps the best 2.0 turbo in the market. It's just sad they're bringing to us engines with outputs that were competitive a decade ago. Anyway, I'll vote with my wallet and not buy Honda - if I had to choose between class leading performance and iffy reliability, i'll take the former anyday. If I had to choose reliability, I would anyway get a Corolla. I wish Honda had given me a chance to not choose between reliability and performance, but then, too bad for them.

Totally agree. [Slightly OT] --> HR-V or Vezel would have been a handsome-looking, practical offering and had it made its way to India, Creta would have gotten sleepless nights. Vezels are sold as CBUs in Sri Lanka and are already massively popular there. There is no denying that at the right price point, it has a potential to succeed in India too.

The new Civic is a fabulous car but as is the popular opinion, it's pricing might not help matters.

Came to know from a friend, Honda wont offer a petrol MT on the Civic in India. There will be only a petrol CVT and a diesel MT.

It's the CR-V that is preventing Civic from getting Diesel AT. Just as simple as that.

The 40 lakhs priced CR-V with its 120 bhp Diesel AT Powertrain won't be worth it's asking price if the same thing is made available in Civic costing 24 lakhs.

I don't think of any other reason why Honda isn't offering Diesel AT with Civic. If CR-V had launched with 160bhp Diesel, this equation would have definitely changed.

Automatics are very popular and Honda should make it available in Diesel version as well. If not that 9 Speed AT, why not pair a CVT with that 1.6 Diesel like in Amaze which has a fantastic Diesel CVT.

Honda looks like your brain is faded on one side and exciting on the other side. Can't help.

re: Scoop: Honda Civic spotted testing in India! Edit: Launched @ 17.69 lakhs

On the ARAI test cycle, the 2019 Honda Civic petrol returns 16.5kpl, while the Civic diesel returns 26.8kpl. The new Honda Civic petrol will only get a CVT with paddle shifters and three drive modes (Eco, Drive and Sport), while the Civic diesel will only get a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 1.8-litre petrol engine’s figures – 141hp and 174Nm – mean that while it isn’t the most powerful in its class, the Civic petrol can match the best in the segment on the fuel efficiency front.

I got the Civic 1.8V for 11.97 lakhs on-road ten years back, the car has only clocked 80K kilometers and is still running strong.

If I consider buying this, I will be shelling out more than double the amount and that too, for the same petrol engine with revised interiors and exteriors

I believe that 1.6 diesel will not be a driver's choice.
Would have been a different story, if there was 1.5 turbo on offer!

Yet another premium diesel offering without an automatic option. Had Honda launched a diesel CVT with paddle shift and ventilated seats,, the Civic would have been a smash hit success.

Sad that Honda India appears infected with the same myopia rampant in the Indian auto industry.

Honda Civic diesel more fuel efficient than Honda City diesel !

Powered by a 1.6-litre ‘Earth Dreams’ turbo-diesel engine making 120hp and 300Nm, the Honda Civic diesel’s fuel efficiency figure is a truly impressive 26.8kpl, which not only makes it more efficient than all its rivals by a significant margin, but also more efficient than the smaller, lighter Honda City diesel, which returns 25.6kpl. This will make the Civic diesel one of the most efficient cars in Honda’s India line-up, not too far behind the Amaze, which returns 27.4kpl.

re: Scoop: Honda Civic spotted testing in India! Edit: Launched @ 17.69 lakhs

I fear the Honda Civic will also be 'Dead on Arrival' - Honda simply doesn't command the premium in the market anymore. No diesel AT AT is a blunder and a petrol manual would have been nice to set a lower price point. Honda better price this well!

The new Civic shape is pretty odd as well and needs a real Honda fan to buy it.

During a recent visit to Whitefield Honda, one of the guys told me that were getting a lot of flak from customers on the CR-V having only 120 bhp.

The qouted part sounded just like a Maruti Suzuki launch!

Have they revealed the weight of the new Indian-spec Civic? FE figures are unreal for this segment - hope the engine is not too limited to achieve this.

I'm more disappointed at the lack of a diesel auto and low(er) power figures in the petrol CVT.
One can only hope that Honda will offer the Civic Type R or something similar.
