With more than 400 outlets as per Car Dekho, wonder how Honda dealers are holding up with these numbers-7,200 units total in a month which turns out to 18 vehicles/month for an outlet! Viability will be in question, not to mention manpower retention.

Honda's monthly figures have reached where GM was hovering around 2013-14 when their downfall started.

Slowdown will be too mild a word in the current scenario when Lockdown will be the more appropriate word today.

As auto companies will reveal its sales/dispatch data today it is predicted to see it down by 40-80% across segments.

Passenger vehicle sales are seen at 145,000-150,000 units in March, halving from the year-ago month. Two-wheeler sales are expected to have slipped below a million units, dropping over 45%.

April too will be no different( or could be worse as BSVI kicks in) since the lockdown is till April 14, dispatches will be lower this month as well amid plant shutdowns and the coronavirus outbreak impacting consumer sentiments.

First causality of the slowdown ( Lockdown,BS6,etc.):

Auto sales in March 2020: Maruti Suzuki sales almost half.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, noted that its passenger vehicle sales for last month declined by 47.4 per cent as compared to March 2019.

- Meanwhile, Maruti and Hyundai grew their market shares 3.9% and 3.3% respectively.

Covid-19 effect: Car sales crash in March 2020

March 2020 saw a sharp decline in car sales due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. Overall sales across all brands fell by 51% compared to the same period last year.



Maruti Suzuki sold 76,240 units, recording a drop of 47% compared to March 2019. Hyundai sales were also down 41%.

Mahindra saw a massive 88% drop in sales, while Tata Motors registered a 70% reduction. Mahindra and Tata sold 3,383 units and 5,676 units respectively.

Toyota and Renault sales were down by 45% and 54% respectively. Toyota dispatched 7,023 cars, while Renault sold just 3,269 units.

Ford sold 3,510 units and saw a de-growth of 58%, while Honda sold 3,697 units, down 72%.

Skoda sales were down by 68%, while Fiat registered an 89% decline in sales. Datsun and Volkswagen sales were down 92% and 95% respectively. With just 673 units sold, Nissan sales were down by 31%.

Sales of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) was also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Sales were down 62% compared to the same period last year.

Here is their statement on the low volumes:

Our performance in March has been muted on account of the impact of the current lockdown related to COVID-19 and the disruption in our BS-VI ramp up plan. The latter was planned between February and March, but was affected due to the challenges of parts supply from global and local suppliers

Obviously we can't read too much into these numbers due to Coronavirus/ last month of BS IV.

That said, I wouldn't want to be a Volkswagen sales rep now. The world's second largest auto maker sold fewer cars in the entire country than some Maruti showrooms.

Except for the Big 2 (Maruti/Hyundai) and a few others (Kia, Tata, Mahindra, Renault), this down turn is only highlighting how most OEM's are barely hanging by a thread.

Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come. Even if the crisis goes away by April or may, the car market would have a very difficult time. The crisis would definitely see job losses, salary cuts and sinking businesses. In such a situation, disposable income would reduce and priorities would change. Quite a lot of car purchase plans would be put on hold or even get cancelled.

While March definitely was bad news for everyone, it seems Renault still has a reason to celebrate. They are only manufacturer who has a growth in sales in FY19 compared to FY18.

Personally gives me a little bit of relief that because of this they should be here for a few years more.

Car makers likely to defer launches, realign strategy over outbreak.

-Automakers are likely to delay product launches scheduled for this year, as the Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown have compounded problem of an already slow market

-In the BSVI transition in which Supreme Court has given a 10-day breather to sell 10% of unsold BS-IV inventories after the lockdown is lifted, automakers will be clamouring to sell those first.

- BS-VI products of some companies are yet to even test the waters, with pricing being a challenge

The focus for most OEMs (automakers) is to recover from the current situation and get their business sustainable. New model launches won't have a positive impact right now as consumers can't even step into dealerships for some time
