Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

I am hoping that along with the more powerful turbo engine, the Altroz also gets additional kit especially the important missing features that its competition offers, such as LED lights, auto-dimming IRVM, tilt and telescopic power steering, 60:40 folding rear seats, six air bags, etc. - then nothing can beat this product in my opinion.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

I just spotted undisguised copy in golden color here in Chinchwad, Pune. No pics as I was driving in thick traffic . Only thing to mention is the engine was very silent than the tiago engine and it zipped past fast once the road opened.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Found this near my home today. No turbo badging as such. The only differences between a regular Altroz and this are

1. New colour
2. Different design alloy wheels
3. Silver accents below mirrors.

Interiors are same aswell.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Hope the turbo petrol is being launched this festive season, instead of dragging through the perpetual 18-36 months testing of Tata.

They could place it bang between the petrol and diesel variants. Right now you either have to live with the petrol or cough up the extra 2 lakhs for the diesel.

Better still, make the turbo as the standard petrol variant.

Re: Tata Altroz with turbo petrol engine spotted undisguised

Has it been announced officially that the autobox on Altroz (as and when they launch) will be a DCT. A bit curious about why Tata would opt for a DCT over a TC. So far DCTs in India have had a bit of a chequered past. VW, Ford as well as Hyundai now. Wouldn’t it be wiser to go with a more reliable TC ? Im sure the good folks at TATA would have given this a good thought. Would love to hear BHPians perspective on this.

Also, given the reputation of Tata’s after sales service which by most accounts remains a bit of a gamble, buyers (such as me at least) would be sceptical about buying the DCT Altroz.

Apart from the colour and new engine there will not be much difference.
2. Tata is lazy with alloy wheel design, it's the same alloys without diamond cut
3. I think it is present in the current generation.

Just to add some additional points here.
Hyundai new DCT is dry type (used also by KIA) and dry clutch DCTs are more prone to heating issues.
It seems Tata is planning a wet clutch DCT.
Now your assertion on the long term reliability of the DCT gearbox from Tata will be actually an interesting point.
For example instead of going to other Gearbox vendors, Tata choose to build one themselves. We can only tell when its launched. May be they want to offer this in other variants later if it helps sales to pick up. (Nexon instead of AMT ??).

I would have honestly also preferred a TC, but as it stands, Tata does not have its own TC, Hexa uses Punch Powertrain sourced, Harrier uses Hyundai one.

Yes. Its a normal 5 speed manual. Interiors are exactly same as the regular Altroz.

AFAIK, they are sourcing the DCT from Punch Powertrain as mentioned earlier in the thread. Though they may have entered into a license manufacturing agreement. Wet Clutch DCT may prove a more reliable design than a dry clutch unit as seen with VW. The dry clutch DQ200 in Polo/Vento/Rapid/Octavia is said to suffer a higher failure rate than the wet clutch unit of the erstwhile Jetta.

Disclosure: I work for an automobile OEM. Views are entirely personal.

Punch Powertrain's products are good. Wet clutch DCT's run cooler compared to the dry clutch DCT's, hence are more suited to operating in places which have high ambient temperatures.

Why is there such a negative attitude towards DCT's in India and the over enthusiastic willingness to accept the inferior Torque Convertor just because it's supposedly more reliable. People are just encouraging manufacturers to dump obsolete technology in India rather than fix the problems and make DCT's more reliable.

It is because every single dry clutch DSG launched has proven to be unreliable in Indian conditions. Torque converters on the other hand are supremely reliable as well as extremely capable. There is a reason why brands like Mercedes and BMW stick with torque converters for their premium products. I am typing this sitting in the back seat of my Hexa which again has a fantastic 6 speed TC.

Better technology is always welcome. But that doesn’t mean we become a guinea pig for companies to do R&D on. Tata is taking a new approach with a wet clutch DSG. Logic says that it should be more reliable than a dry clutch. How it will actually performance will be make or break for the company.

TCs are not obsolete. 8 speed ZF in BMWs, 9G tronic in mercs and the 10 speed one in new Endeavor are no way inferior products. Even the new polo/vento reviews says new auto box is not far behind in terms of responsiveness
