re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

I guess until 2024 they will continue to test and hopefully we have a great product without any bugs or issues upfront.

Also I have a feeling they may launch the 3 door refresh as well. Must be only cosmetic changes.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

These are completely different from the current 3 door Thars. From engine tunes to chassis, body and suspension setup. Hence the testing. Also with the sheer number of niggles which are cropping up on the Scorpio N as well as the age related issues coming up on the Thar, they are bound to be a lot more thorough.

Drive a 2 year old 50k normal run toyota and comparing it with a similar run SN or Thar brings out clear lines of distinction of build quality and robustness. Be it interior, body or suspension.

Plus, they need to cut down on the waiting period. 1+ years of waiting is ridiculous, by that period the model is already up for a revision (or feature deletion in Mahindra's lingo).

From what I understand the chasis is based on the Scorpio-N, So, I assume rear suspension components etc are different.
But, in my opinion the primary reason is what Rakesh has mentioned below. they are severely backlogged with the Scorpio-N and XUV700 adding another product that will be popular will create customer anguish for Mahindra.

Saw a few comments talking of the metal roof on the 5-door. Is that confirmed or still just a possibility as of now?

Mahindra Thar (5d) to get LED headlights, sunroof and more!

In the spy shots, we can see the heavily camouflaged test mule of the Thar 5-door. The most obvious change has to be the LED headlamps. Also, the test mule comes with the same alloy design as the 3-door version. Though not visible in spy shots, it is said to have sunroof.

Any news on whether the watts link suspension will be carried on to the Thar from the Scorpio N?

As per some of the pics shared a few months back it won't. Makes sense too if they want a differentiating factor between the two.

Alloy wheels may look same but there is slight change in design and these are diamond cut alloy wheels.

As with the Thar , they are bound to be changed with a new set. Hoping that the new 5 door comes with padding on the metal roof so that heat doesn't pounce into the cabin.

Am I the only one who is really upset about the fact that we got no new news about the 5 door Thar this Independence Day?

Mahindra Thar 5-door spied with a larger touchscreen

Mahindra will be positioning the Thar 5-door as a more practical family SUV. Therefore, we can expect it to pack several features and creature comforts. The latest spy images suggest that the 5-door version could get a larger touchscreen infotainment system.

Mahindra currently offers a 7-inch touchscreen head unit in the Thar 3-door. The one seen in these spy images appears much bigger and has a floating look.

The Thar 5-door is expected to get heavily bolstered front seats with a large centre armrest. The seats in the second row could also get adjustable headrests. The SUV is likely to be offered with a single-pane sunroof as well.

The Thar 5-door will be offered with the same engine options as the 3-door version. These include a 2.2-litre diesel producing 130 BHP and 300 Nm and a 2.0-litre petrol that makes 150 BHP and 300-320 Nm. Both engines are likely to be offered with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Mahindra should give Scorpio engine for 5 door to compensate additional weight. Else 5 door might be underpowered.

I really hope they plonk the 180hp diesel engine from the XUV700 into this. It would be woefully underpowered for the weight and price band if it has the same 130hp from the 3 door thar.

I would like to respectfully disagree. I own and have driven the 2013 XUV500 (with 138 BHP engine and 320 NM Torque) for more than 1 Lakh KMs and it never felt underpowered even with 5 passengers and luggage! Infact XUV500 is able to keep up with latest car of the segment on highways and hills. Also, the previous generation Scorpio was launched with the 120 BHP, 2.2L Mhawk engine and was later given the same tune as XUV500, it also never felt underpowered.
