1. While I agree with a lot of other members when they say that Hyundai AMT is better than Tata or others, what no one tells you is that the there is the typical Headnod present – specially if you have the habit of driving with high revs.
2. Another major problem is that in the morning when you cold start the car for the first time, there are a lot of jerks felt which smoothen out after about 2 -3 mins of standing or 1 -2 kms of driving.
3. This problem may be only with my car – when the car goes over a hump at any speed, say about 10 kmps, there is a strong jerk and noise from the front suspension. I had raised it to the ASS but it was dismissed as a non issue. The ride quality is not very pleasing.
4. Now the road from my parking to the Apartment Main gate is around 1 kms and has speed brakers every 20 mts. So when I am driving the Nios over them, the car stays in 1st gear, Speeds of approx. 15kmph and rpm at around 1500. As I cannot exceed this speed due to frequently slowing down to go over the humps, the jerks due to rpm fluctuations are very very irritating. Compare this to the Crysta 2.4 TC AT – it just flows / glides over the humps without breaking a sweat. Don’t know the gear the car is on – the shifts are that smooth. I guess having a larger capacity engine also helps there. So want a smoother experience over the Nios.

So now the Main question – Exter or Jimny for me ?
Some pointers will help me decide accordingly. Sorry for hijacking this thread.
Majority of your dislikes for i10 NIOS are due to the engine and the gearbox combo, which is the same in Exter. So, don't think Exter is the right choice.

Re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

I am not sure why Hyundai and Kia are moving to a digital instrument cluster, it is an eyesore and also difficult to read with numbers changing all the time, especially the rev counter, may induce headache/sickness if one keeps an eye on it all the time , On the other hand dials on the Nios and Aura are so neat and easy to read!

Although looks are subjective, I am liking this small SUV from all the angles. Here are couple of screen grabs of the side profile. It looks sporty with the rear spoiler, roof-rails and an upright stance.

Re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

Just saw some Exter ads on youtube. The car does look pretty proportionate from all angles. Much better than few of their recent launches(Creta/i20/Verna). Tata Punch will have some tough competition now. While people do appreciate its 5* safety & mini-harrier looks, am sure the 'Sunroof' would sway quite a few towards the Exter. As in our market we see Sunroof>>>Safety.

BTW didn't know the brand is pronounced as 'Hunn-Day'. All this while I was pronouncing it 'Hooon-daai'

After the complete reveal of the interiors, it wouldn't be wrong to see this car as an SUV version of the Grand i10 Nios. Good to see that they are giving proper 3 point seatbelts for the rear centre passenger though I wish they would have provided a headrest at the centre as well.

Sad to see fixed headrests for the front passengers....

Car looks beautiful inside and out. If i was in market for car within 10lak, this would be my choice. I hope they launch N line with this car.

Re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

" Think outside. Think EXTER". I think Hyundai India has told the same to their designers too. They only thought about the exterior. Interiors just got lifted off from the existing cars. This practice is not uncommon among the car manufactures but too glaring in EXTER. If you are in Hyundai showroom checking i10 NIOS, aura and EXTER you may have to come out to check which one you are sitting in.
I truly appreciate the great effort by Hyundai to give six air bags and other safety features across all variants. But they must do this to compensate for " India specific unstable body shell design". They also save money by not providing basic but important safety feature like rear wash wiper. When Maruti is upping their game with strong hybrids and off roaders Hyundai is trying to compete with Punch. They were successful doing this with Duster by launching Creta. But Punch is already an iconic car like Nexan for the mass. We need to see EXTER on road whether it can really match Punch looks. Punch is real cute car. EXTER is going to cannibalize i10 NIOS, entry level variants of i20s and Venues.
We also need to be thankful to Maruti, Tata and Hyundai for still keeping the small cars space exciting when global car makers are moving out of this segment for profit.

Re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

I would have bought it if it were a EV. Looks really good with all features. Just the drivetrain is not right for me. I would never take it outside city and would have been so apt

Thanks mate. These are very very important ownership perspectives that I could not gather from the limited time spent during the test drive & are a deal breaker for me.
I think most of the modern-day cars with powerful turbos or AMT need a minute of idling from a cold start before push-off. All those clunks and jerks in the AMT get sort of ironed out with this and in the case of the turbos, the engine settles down nicely after the initial>1000rpm spin (my xuv7OO P AT is downright scary to take out of tight parking space on cold start due to the way the car leaps ahead if you do not tightly control the brake)

#3 may be a specific problem with your car - try comparing this with a TD vehicle from the showroom.

I disliked the fixed head rests on this car - look el cheapo and are also a safety risk (inadequate whiplash protection) + in case of a crash, adjustable headrests can be used to break the glass (let's not say we can procure this from the rear ones - we are talking of a crash here).

Having said that, Jimny interiors might give a basic vibe in comparison with the Nios cabin which albeit a bit dated [the steering wheel design reminds me of the gen1/2 Creta)] overall feels a bit more premium due to Hyundai interior quality.

Cheers

That's how it is pronounced in the US. If you go 'Hooon-daai', folks over there will not understand what brand you are referring to

Re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

Thanks guys for sharing the details and the interior pics. The car looks proportionate from all the angles and loaded with features. Its basic success mantra in Indian market. We all assume that it will be a Punch rival but what my guess is that it will hit i10 Nios, and Fronx more than the Punch. Punch has its own fan following and most likely Tata will introduce Sunroof in it sooner or later as they did in Altroz.
Does anyone know the ground clearance of Exter?

Re: Hyundai Exter Compact SUV bookings open

Everyone wants an CSUV/SUV nowadays, but there is only Punch available for <=10l buyers. If Exter is similar to Punch with respect to pricing. Then all <=10l buyers will go for Exter rather than Punch( Due to superior ASS ) .

If this is priced below i10, even Maruti baleno/swift sales will tonk.

But something tells me Exter will be priced similar to Nexon or fronx. Then it will eat into their own Venue and i10 sales (which is bad for Hundai).
