re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

With Maruti's production capacities, even large amounts of bookings for Jimny will be cleared off within 4-5 months. I assume Maruti to ramp up production from 3500-4000 to a possible 6500-7000 Jimny's per month. Even a 20,000 wait list should be cleared off in 6 month's time - max.

Any idea where the Jimny will be made? The old Gypsy body - on - frame assembly line at Gurgaon or Gujarat?

Well if I understand it right the serial nos may not be a correct indicator as at the time of the launch they will be despatching vehicles all over India and not necessarily in the order you have booked rather it may depend on the showroom selected and this will also play a part.

Further, I have only received the Payment receipt as of date. Maybe they will communicate the booking reference no. at a later stage. I am waiting to be contacted by the dealer.

The one area where I find the Jimny ticking my box is its dimensions. Considering it takes 10 to 12 hours travelling 430kms between my home and the inlaws in Kerala with its narrow highways, I'd imagine it would be a bit less stressful navigating bylanes (which are national highways in KL) in a smaller package. The lack of parking in metro areas and rural KL for anything longer than 4m is another reason to downsize.

Would be a different experience once the KA-KL 4 lane work is completed. Right now I'm driving my Creta through under construction highways and it feels like I brought a gun to a knife fight.

I will test drive the Jimny soon and from what I know researching the 3 door version, the top heavy vehicle will be just as bouncy as the Thar. One media house has demonstrated that the Jimny is okay for a 6 foot 5 plus size reviewer so I'm curious about the ingress egress bit and driveability.

This is an entirely different topic of discussion and it has possibly been covered here on Tbhp already. Fundamentally there has to be a change in the mindset from prohibition to organised revenue generation. If people are educated and equipped to camp responsibly / traverse wilderness without leaving tracks and making a mess, it should be a decent source of revenue.

I would gladly pay to explore marked/curated trails across the country without having to grease palms or interact with villagers and “locals”.

Can you share a link to this review please?

Again OT:
Here are some screenshots from the ladybird book Man and his Car. Given to me in 1974. Still perfectly topical and relevant.

I don't think the booking number means much. I booked on 13th Jan and my number ends with 2513.

Yes, these SOB numbers are not the booking serial number/ sequence. Mine is 42xx and I booked the Jimny within an hour of unveil on 12th Jan!

I guess the enthusiast community is waiting for the Jimny for 3 years+. Hence a couple of months waiting period won't make any difference.

I think you are right. The SOB doesn't seem to be like a common booking number. It may be a dealer specific booking running number.

I think this is a click bait article. Till yesterday it was 10000 and overnight it can't become 25000. I would take this with a pinch of salt.

Forget Thar, here is a video of Jimny matching the Toyota Land Cruiser

re: Maruti Jimny 4-door @ Auto Expo 2023

I am not sure what makes Jimney selling like hot cakes. The engine is lethargic 1.5 L NA which does duty on Brezza/GV, there is no punch in the engine. Its best suited for sedate driving. Torque figures are nothing much to write home about.

And believe me when I say this, over 90% of those who are buying it for its 4x4 capabilities will not even use 4x4 for more than 2% of its driving lifetime.

I would, rather put my money on Thar or Gurkha or Scorpio-N if I need serious off roading capabilities. Heck, for the kind of "off-roading" the common Indian car buyer does, even Thar RWD would suffice !

On point.

And the Thar RWD at a similar price point will have more than twice the torque output compared to the Jimny.
I had the previous generation Thar CRDe 4x4, and in 2 years of ownership, I went off-roading only 3-4 times I guess.

The Thar RWD is a great product at that price.

But then, the Jimny is expected to be much easier to drive.
The new Thar, although more car-like than the old one, still asks for a little more effort than the usual crop at the same price range.
