Get Ready for the "AxE Effect" Mahindra to launch "AXE"

Hi All,

Good news is that it will be available in the market soon.
Here's a full report (source: [Mahindra’s AXE The New Army Vehicle “Desi Hummer”).

After the success of Mahindra and Renault’s Logan now Mahindra & Mahindra’s AXE the new army vehicle “Desi Hummer”.
Mahindra (M&M) Indian Hummer is going to serve the Indian army’s and also for the civilians.
Mahindra Axe is the first of its kind in Indian Multipurpose army vehicle and also available for civilians. Mahindra and Renault’s are also planning for cheapest small car, Yeni. Mahindra & Renault’s Yeni and Mahindra & Mahindra’s AXE will be available soon.

Specifications of Mahindra AXE “Desi Hummer”
  • 2.7 litre CRDi diesel/4 litre VOTEC petrol.
  • Diesel axe 10-13 km per litre/Petrol axe 8-10 km per litre.
  • Mercedes Based 5 Gear Manual /4 Gear Automatic Transmission system for the Axe.
  • All-Wheel Independent Suspension Vehicle.
  • Open Caged Army Based Body With Broad Tires.
  • 65 litre Tank Capacity.
  • Least Luxurious but Most Reliable.
Mahindra is going to start new plant, Mahindra Special Military Vehicles Ltd and it will be specialized in only Military Vehicles. The new plant will make and supply defense vehicles like the Axe and any future military specific models developed by Mahindra.
Mahindra’s new company will have its own manufacturing plant outside Delhi in Faridabad on a 6-acre plot. Initial investments are pegged at about Rs 50 crore.

Mahindra Axe civilian version will also be available but it depends on success of army based Mahindra AXE. Mahindra has a long and successful record designing Jeeps and SUVs for military and civilian use. There’s a lot of visible commonality between the Axe and a several of Mahindra’s own SUVs.Hence not alone the Indian army is gifted, we too!
Yes, Mahindra is planning a civilian version of the Axe.The civilian version of axe will be ready by 2009 with an automatic transmission. Axe’s civilian version will be available with styling and other changes. But it will use a Mahindra drive line.
The basic characteristic of performance will be the same but the looks will be different like the Humvee and Hummer. For the civilian version of axe the engine displacement will be lowered and there will be cosmetic changes on the dashboard. But the Mahindra wants to keep the suspension and platform will be unchanged.
Axe civilian version will be only diesel and with automatic transmission. Mahindra will showcase the axe at the 2008 Delhi Auto Expo. Mahindra’s commercial Axe is expected to be priced roughly between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 22 lakh.

Thanks Ruffyryder. This is a great news. But its a huge range of price - 12 to 22 lakhs ! And what is the likely launch date- by any chance if you have clue. I am surprised why M&M should choose to go for 4 speed AT while it already has launched 6 speed AT for Scorpio Mhawk.

anytime @ shatrughna..I guess the price range is intentional as Mahindra does not want everybody to own one and would like to keep it for the elite few, just like the Hummer..
afaik..the launch should happen in April 2009..and iam clueless on your last question..would try to get an answer to it..

Reason for 4 Speed AT would be power delivery. 6 Speed AT is meant for urban driving in Scorpio and 4 Speed AT in AXE is meant for Seriuos off roading.

Expensive, but look at the tools on board! I never expected the civilian Axe to sell for less than 14 - 15 lakhs OTR. Its a niche anyways, this will be the offroader to own.

Mahindra ought to organise a challenging great escape exclusively for Axe owners.

What engine is this? Aren't they using an inhouse diesel?

65 litre Tank Capacity.
The Axe desperately needs a bigger tank for the applications that it's built for. I hope the army push them into atleast a 100L capacity. Neither engine (especially the petrol) is going to be particularly fuel-efficient, thus affecting overall range.

Nice poses in the first pic !

The hanging steps at the sides were least required.

@Ruffryder, pls use multi-quote when responding to more than one message. Also, a post that you make is editable for 20 mins.

This amounts to hauling roughly 87 kg over and above.

Guys, This could be an all new segment for Mahindra. Hummer started of with the H1..Then making a luxurious H2 and then making the H3..This could be an all new segment in Inida!!
