With the current rift between Mahindra & Renault seeming unending, will Renault be willing to share its petrol engine?

Seems Mahindra's are trying to enter the domain of Gypsy in the Defense sector too.

Mahindra 4-meter compact-SUV: 1500 CC diesel, @ Rs. 6 lacs

Guys, Mahindra is getting majorly proactive. Apart from the upcoming premium SUV that'll be positioned above the Scorpio, the company is also developing an all-new mini-SUV, similar to the Premier Rio. The vehicle is being designed in such a way that it falls in the small-car category to avail the concessional excise benefit. It'll sport a 1500 CC 3 cylinder diesel engine designed by Mahindra, probably derived from the mHAWK 2.2 litre unit by chopping off one cylinder and some further alteration to bore/stroke dimensions, to keep the CC just below 1500. A 1200 CC petrol engine will also be offered that Mahindra will neither design nor make - it'll be simply be procured from another manufacturer, a' la petrol Scorpio. The original plan was to buy the engine from Renault but that was before the recent split. The vehicle will be positioned below the Scorpio and is expected to retail at around Rs. 6 lacs. It'll be made at Mahindra's recently inaugurated Billion Dollar Chakan factory that'll also make the primium SUV along with a host of other vehicles, including the Mahindra-Navistar trucks. It's not yet clear whether a 4X4 version will be on offer.

The vehicle is still at the design stage and it may be 2-3 years before it hits the roads.

Good that manufacturers are thinking along that lines. Premier Rio at least succeeded in letting other manufacturers know that they can exploit the compact SUV segment, and there are virtually no players there.

It is about time too! the only manufacturer other than Maruti who have this capability are finally trying to get there.

this is something they should have done a long time ago, to provide consumers with a viable, comfortable, modern mini SUV which has fantastic utility value! Hope they do offer 4x4 as an option atleast. There are lots of people out there who will opt for the same if the price is right.

Premier Rio may not be everyone's ideal mini SUV on account of various reasons.

But with Mahindra's SUV DNA or Maruti's Gypsy DNA, once they launch vehicles of this type/category one can reasonably expect a sure shot hit.

International examples are plentiful - SX4 Crossover/ Fiat Sedici, Nissan Juke and Quashquai, Renault Sandero etc etc.

I believe that the 1.5L engine will be the same as in case of Logan with souped up power (BHP & Torque).
But, anyway this is good news for 4X4 enthusiasts.

In my opinion, it will have a huge market. People who buy tall cars such as Wagon R, Santro etc opt for this if the pricing is right.

This is good news! there is a large market gap for a vehicle like this. The Rio would have been a viable option if it was from a established player.

2-3 years seem a long time to wait!

Come to think of it, why does MUL not offer Gypsy with regular comfort features factory fitted ?

A stock gypsy cannot be a daily drive - what with the missing AC / PS / Security features etc.
But if the same work that is done by so many gypsy modifications seen, offered directly by MUL using their standard engines (1.2k, 1.3mjd) at about a lac extra - they pretty much can get it rolling very fast in this unexplored market territory.

Good move by M&M. I hope it doesn't look like shrunken Xylo
I'm still waiting for Maruti-Suzuki to launch original SX4.

A 4X2 under 4 1/2 meters will do. Awaiting such a SUV from MM or TATA.They should look at Koreans @ looks, plastics & design. but if they take 2-3 years to bring one it will strugle to find a slot in the market

Spikey, where are you?! Can you confirm anything on this project? B.D Sir too was hinting on other exciting projects in M&M. May be this is one of them!
