hyundai do a great job when coming to the inner space. i havnt seen i20 in real till yet but i'm sure i20 will be much more spacious than swift and even the getz.

People have been questioning the driveability of i20 owing to 1.2 lt engine. Looking at the specs, i2 generates 114 Nm @ 4000 rpm against Swift petrol's 113 Nm @4500 rpm. The weight of the two is comparable too with i20 being at 1066 kgs against Swift ~1000kg. Performance should be comparable. Of course gear ratios will play a role in actual driveability and we have seen earlier that Hyundai's horses are more dud mules.

So comparing i20 Asta against Swift ZXi, for 50k extra you get more space, better build quality, electronic ORVMs, better tripmeter and a newer car. Is it worth it? IMHO at 25-30 k premium over Swift ZXi, i20 Asta would have been a terrific VFM. At 50k, people may choose it over Swift ZXi only if they need all the extra space.

Is Hyundai going to perform a boot job and can we expect an i20 sedan anytime soon? With that potent CRDI engine carried over from the Getz, we could have some serious competition to the Swift Dzire and the Indigo Vista.

highly unlikely. With the pricing of the i20 hatch the sedan would be in the same price range as the Verna thereby cannibalising the verna sales.

The boot looks to be quite big. I'm sure boot capacity will be close to some sedan's.

Just from my own eobservation of the car, the rear leg room in the car is not as good as one expects. Specially as the increase in length over Swift has gone more in to the boot space than the rear leg room. Its more than Swift, but its still a little cramped when it comes to long journeys.

I went in to see the i20 yesterday.
TD was not available.
Here is my first impression:
The car is big, it looks and feels a class above that swift and fabia.
Features as we all know are amazing.
Cooled glove box is of pretty decent size.
Quality of plastics were ok/good, certainly not the best. Definitely better than swift anyday.
I found the brown/purplish color ok. Its a personal choice.
Default HU unit's performance is decent for a stock.
Interiors look good and give feel of a big car.
Steering looks copied from swift, its really nice.
Boot is pretty spacious for a hatchback.
Rear leg room is not that great with front seats pushed all the way back.
I really liked the overall design of the car, specially the rear.

I dont think that driveability will be such an issue, considering that Hyundai would have geared the car accordingly. But what will really matter is highway performance. Suzuki motor is good at top end and bad at bottom end, so we can still expect I20 to be equal to Swift or slightly better in city driving, but on the highway the legendary Swift engine will have advantage. More power concentrated at top end coupled with relatively high gearing means Swift is an effortless cruiser on highways as compared to I20 1.2 petrol.

I20 1.2 petrol = good for driving within city.
Swift 1.3 petrol = excellent for highways as compared to I20 1.2 petrol.

NO, not terrific VFM, rather I20 is in league of Fabia. A 1.2 for a car that is large and heavier than Swift will result into not so good performance and Swift will have upper hand as far as driving experience is concerned ( I have not driven the I20 ). The performance would just not be comparable to Swift. IMO, Hyundai should not be so crazy for that tax concession.


The price of I20 is considering under 1.2 ltr engine and under 4 mtrs. length, so Swift attracts 24 % duty and I20 does 16 %. Hence the price difference is 50K. Hyundai should bring in 1.4 or may be utilizing the Getz motor.

Was on the launching time of the Car at Samara Hyundai, Delhi.

After seeing the car in personal here is my take on few things:-

Looks good, big fatty boy

Enter inside and it givew you a premium feeling

Tons of goodies

Plastic quality better than Maruti not comparable to comp (Fabia or Jazz)

Rear legroom is not great at all, for person like me who is 6' tall, it would be hell lot of problem sitting behind a person like me.

Hyundai have outdone themselves by pricing this good but wont say a killer price for the engine being offered.

Overall looks a great family car!

guess hyundai is going the i10 way w.r.t engines. Hope they bring in the 1.4L engine few months down the line, as they did with i10 kappa.

Dont think the pricing is gr8, but thats expected since they have to sell Getz too in the same segment.

Its just my opinion after looking at the kerb weight of I20 i.e. 1066kg. Now the I10 1.2 cannot match the highway performance of Swift, so I20 being much heavier than I10, I am pretty sure it wont be that good on highway as compared to Swift. And regarding Swift, the fourth and fifth are slightly on the higher side because the engine is good at top end.
Thats why my opinion.
