Really Tutu? I don't remember the anecdotes now but he used to do the user queries section of an auto show and was absolutely horrendous. Did not know a thing.

For me too. The only show i watch in TV is NDTV by Siddharth. His presentation is decent. The pathetic one is in CNN IBN where Shereen Bhan talks....

Except that he keeps telling same lines over and over, "Lot of chrome is thrown around here "
Otherwise, watchable. I have not come across any tv show which tries to educate viewers on various aspects of car and car purchases. That's really unfortunate.

Haven't really found Indian version of Harry Metcalfe yet, who keeps it simple and informative. No jargons.

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

I watch the following auto shows on weekends:
1. Autocar show on UTVi
2. CnB on NDTV
3. Overdrive
4. Top Speed on IBN7
5. Wheelocity
6. Forgot the name of the show which airs on NewsX
7. Drive It on DW-TV ( the channel no longer airs on my box)
The top 2 are my favorite!
There was this show airing on Star News long time ago where the hostess would wear a short skirt & yell ' yeh dekhiye gaadi main kitna leg room hai' & the camera would zoom in on her legs!
Used to watch Zigwheels as well but that stopped airing.
Another show which stopped airing was Chakke pe Chakka on Aaj Tak.Thank god for that.

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

The only car show that I used to watch was CNB.

Now, I no longer have much interest in it - thanks to Team BHP, you cannot take anything else! Hope to see full descriptive video reviews soon! How about a channel on YouTube first?

Hormazd and Kripalani have the most sensible show. Patankar is still somewhat of a joke. Especially when he goes on and on about a curve here, a line there and a haunch somewhere. And he is a complete sellout - keeps going thrice a year to Germany to drive one of the German upscale brands - what is the point of this to the viewer. A year or so ago, He used to have a phase where he was constantly evolving his looks - a long pony tail, then with a hair band and so on - we used to start making fun of him singing "I feel so pretty!" ;-)

Agreed, worse is Shireen Bhan and her fake accent. Atleast Sid "I am so pretty" Patankar can talk well and is watchable, whereas Bhan has neither and just irritates me so much that I change channels as soon as she appears on screen and says "OuuuwwerDroiv" or "Eewwerdroiv". Makes me wonder what these news channels find in the clowns they have for presenters. Example is the funny tall guy on the CNBC show - he can neither talk well nor drive well, and worse, he is so tall that he doesn't seem to fit comfortably in most Indian cars. The worst is that nasty looking guy on the Times Now show - perhaps he threatened Arnab Goswami using his links from the Bombay underworld to get himself a car show

Man, you must have some patience to put up with so much in one weekend. But I would watch that Star News eye candy show in preference to all the junk that is put on TV in the name of car shows.

Again I wish BBC had the sense to keep Topgear going in some way. Thankfully some helpful fellows have put up Topgear S19 on torrents - it looks like this is the only route to savor a true car show.

I missed out Times Drive ,so that goes at number 8. Watching all these shows has become a routine for me along with other tech shows!

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

I watch most of the shows listed here and i share the same opinion that most have expressed-the shows really leave a lot to be desired.
My 2 cents
Bert on OD is pretty bad, his answers in the Q & A section many a times makes me wonder if we are talking about the same cars. Sirish, earlier, used to be better
SVP (as he likes to call himself) is ok. I don't think he has any deep knowledge of cars, technical aspects etc nor a true passion for automobiles, although he doesn't miss a chance to prophesise his passion for automobiles. so his reviews are generally superficial and are purely subjective. I really think he has got an extremely big soft corner for mahindra. If there is some launch/news from mahindra it gets a lot of time and the reviews are generally positive (as far as possible) and mahindra executives get a lot of time. More or less same is the case with Audi and its Chief Executive in India
Autocar is generally better but their production quality is not that great. Autocar show many years back used to be on CNBC and it was better. Also i feel the scoop section as a regular feature is a bad idea as it is forcing Hormazd to come up with something every week, which in some cases means sharing stale news as scoop

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

I have watched CnB for years together now. Catch autocar now and then. They are ok, but sadly none of them live up to what I consider the greatest Car show on earth. TopGear on BBC.
They are insane. They are simple incomparable to anything else on television. And on that bombshell, I totally agree with the topic of this thread

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

Most of the car shows are testing premium or luxury cars, when was the last time you saw a Wagon R being tested?

There is this show on Asianet, you can get the videos on Youtube, its called Smartdrive, yes its in Malayalam, a language that I find difficult to understand but with English words interspersed, its manageable. That is what I think most shows should aim at getting to

SVP on CnB NDTV is getting into a pattern, the way he walks around a car describing the design details is getting too clichéd and Shereen Bhan, she has not changed her pink Blackberrry for years!

I actually hate this show. At first he was working with indiavision (another malayalam channel) and there used to be a lot of mistakes and wrong facts in this programme. One I do remember was he saying that the Indica vista 90bhp petrol was more fun to drive than a Linea T jet. He was very specific about that and it was not a case of getting the name wrong. With that I stopped seeing this show. But he do test a wide variety of cars. Overdrive loves VW/Skoda, Honda etc. I don't think there is any near perfect car shows in Indian televisions. And that's a big opportunity to be explored. Most of the car shows are commercialised or affected by the personal preferences of the reviewer to a greater extend. If the experts from team-bhp can put up a TV car show professionally it can be a big hit. For now I depend upon team-bhp reviews as well as test drives to know about a car.

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

These are the ones I watch :

1. CNB on NDTV 24x7 : Siddharth Vinayak Patankar likes to show himself more than he shows the cars. He gets more on air time than the car he is reviewing. He's like Ravi Shastri (if you know what I mean ) in his description of the exterior and interior of a car. Every alternate month you will find him in Europe driving a VW/Skoda/Audi/BMW or attending the various Motor Shows. Has a soft spot for Mahindra (*cough* Auto Quotient *cough*). He had a program which showed SVP riding a BMW/Audi and going through the vast stretches of Europe and nothing else. Even though the name of the show is Car and Bike show, you won't find him testing a bike. If you see any bike related clip, look closely and it will be Kranti Sambhav riding. He seems more interested in testing the cars above C and D Segment and his show seems tailored to that target audience rather than the Mass Market.

2. Auto Car Show on Bloomberg TV : Renuka Kriplani and Kartikeya Singhee do a fine job of hosting and being the Editor and Deputy Editor. Renuka has been a rally car driver and takes you through the car in a very calm and composed manner. Karthikeya becomes a tad excited sometimes. Renuka does a thorough job with the driving, but somehow never involves the viewer. Also because she's not very tall, I don't take her opinion of Rear Leg Room seriously. All in all, they are still better than SVP as they know that the audience wants to watch the cars and not them.

3. Raftaar on NDTV India : Many of you may not have heard about Kranti Sambhav because he hosts the show on a Hindi Channel. The show is not a copy of Car and Bike Show of SVP and is pretty unique in itself. I have seen Kranti testing many commuter bikes like Discover, TVS Jive etc which many shows give a miss because they only want to test the premium stuff only. Has a mass market appeal and tries to cater to the common man.

4. Awaaz Overdrive on CNBC Awaaz : The only thing I like about the show is their Tools and Tips section where a GM of a Service Station shows you how to take care of your wipers, brakes, engine, oil filter, air filter, prepare your car for monsoons etc. Good stuff for n00bs. Apart from that, the show is so bad that in fact it's good. Recently they don't have time to shoot so that are into comparisons of different cars. What they do is they take a car launched say 1 year ago and compare with a car launched 6 months ago. Instead of getting both the cars and comparing them side by side (like most sane auto journalists do) they take the review of 1 year old car and 6 month old car from their archive and do a cut and paste job. Tutu Dhawan is Epic on the show. He has his favorites and will tell you to buy them even if they not in the options. For Cars it's Maruti and for bikes it's Hero Honda. His reason being these cars and bikes "sabse jyaada mileage nikaalti hain" (give the best mileage).

5. Wheelocity on Zee Business : This show is hosted by a Male Host who used to host Prime Sports and a female host who still hosts the Great Chefs of India on the same channel. Enough Said.

Re: Indian 'Car' shows on TV are PATHETIC

While I agree the quality of most of the Indian Car shows is really bad but there are some good ones like Autocar & CnB.Also,it would be unfair to compare these shows with TopGear as its scale hasn't been matched by any car-related show anywhere in the world. You can see that even in its US or Oz versions which pale in comparison to the UK one.
Also,TopGear isn't a Car Show, its a TV show centred around cars and maybe that's why its so successful because you don't have to be a car nut to enjoy it.

Secondly, most of these shows contents are controlled by auto companies in India so you never really get to know the truth behind a car or bike unless you own it.

Yes,sometimes he does go overboard but I think he gives the most detailed review on TV in India and gives his opinion on what he thinks rather than blabbering out company claimed numbers.

When was the last time you saw something new being introduced in the WagonR worth talking about.

What do you mean excited?Do you always like dull and boring reviews and did you see renuka's ecosport review? She obviously was over exaggerating how good the car was, maybe due to some arrangement with Ford.

His reviews are amazing.I haven't found any other person's reviews which are so knowledgable, fun and passionate. And he tells the truth behind the cars(too bad he can't review Ferraris because of that)
