Maruti has the first players advantage. Maruti is known for their small cars, and this just happenned to suit the indian buyer. Hyundai realised this early and they are also reaping the benefits (Hyundai's gain is partly maruti's loss). Other manufactures have just realised that small is the way to go in India. The next round of battles are just about to begin.

AFAIK the Beetle received 250 orders in the first week of launch. That's it.

Audi seems to be fast catching BMW with it's sale.
BMW wake up and make a second wave of revolution in the segment.
BMW please start the lease plan for India?

we need to put 100% tax for cars registered in mumbai and mumbai suburbs city, and Rs.200 toll charges for cars entering inside mumbai city having 4 or less drivers in car, now we dont have any parking available and except big malls, I can't park my car at most of the places, driving is hazardous and very tiring and always takes long time. In 2003, when i bought second hand zen car, i was the 5th owner to own car in our building now there are 15+ cars and building only has parking for 6 cars, rest are parked outside on road which should be used by cars and pedestrians! and number is only increasing. (no foot path for pedestrians). What a mess.

In 2003, when roads was small, i used to travel 25 kms in just 25 minutes, now roads are three times wide and wonderfully built but traveling time has increased to 50-75 minutes for same journey (more then twice). Due to traveling problems, I was forced to shift my office near home because I can't travel daily to my office through car because it sucks out 2-3 hours from daily time.

More car sales in India is not progress, cars = problem for Indian cities.

+1 to that.

Progress is only when our travelling time reduces.
What we need is bullet trains and excellent public transport in our crowded cities(monorails, world class metro rail, dedicted bus lanes).
And then nobody will take their cars out for daily commuting. Cars will be predominantly used for weekend trips and so on..

Does anyone have a clue as to what the JLR volumes are like? I can't seem to find any figures anywhere.

Hyundai should release a new product in the small car segment to either replace the Santro or create a new space. If they don't ramp up their lineup this year they might not be able to maintain their momentum. The KIA Soul is one radical car that i'm sure would find buyers here. Hyundai can easily rebadge/rework it for the Indian market as it shares components with the i-10 platform.
