Indica's sales at 4228 is a big surprise; more than 50% drop over the previous month! What happened there?

I guess the plant was shut down for maintenance and also since the dealers will have some stock, with these 4228 units they would have ensured they met the demand as well reduce the vehicles in stock of 2009 manufactured vehicles.

Indica doing consistent numbers will not have such a drastic drop of more than 50%

Looks like GM perseverance in the midsize segment is paying off big time. The excellent pricing for Cruze has it nipping at Toyota's heels and it will probably be the highest seller in this segment for Q4 considering the AT to be launched this Friday.

All they need to do is launch a decontented version (Cruze LS??) at under 10L ex showroom and see another spike in sales.

And Karl Slym if you are seeing this, please please bring the 1.4 twinport Ecotec (GM Speak for turbo) as it is planned for the US market Cruze. With the snail attached, this engine is rated at 140bhp and would be good enough for sub 10s times.

Dec 2009 Sales in xls format-gm-1.4-turbo.jpg

And Mr Slym, while I am dreaming, why not introduce a Cruze SS with either the 3.6 DI V6 or the 2.4 twinport Ecotec.

I am sure 300 odd horses would be enough to set the cat among the German and Japanese pigeons.

Looking at Tata Indica's numbers, one would have to give them the benefit of doubt for reporting such low numbers for 12/2009. Their production dropped from 10767 in 11/09 to 5473 in 12/09. Similar sort of numbers were reported in 11/08 and 12/08 indicating some production cuts. Some production has also been shifted to Nano and ACE/Winger.

Indigo however is a different story with Tata clearing out huge old stock in 12/09. Only 311 produced in 12/09 but 5106 sold.

Jazz is again in overproduction. Makes sense. Browsed Honda's site over the last few days. The prices of Jazz are given, but those for City and Civic are not (site says prices under revision).

Accent/Verna has huge overproduction (>3,500) for 12/09. Maruti compact segment has the same story (>13,000). Overproduction means production less sales for that month.

Since 2010 has started, and these 12/09 production figs are now a year old (with possibly better bargains for people looking for a 2009 model), here is the list of models/segments that produced substantially more than were sold in 12/09:

M800, Jazz, Hyundai compacts, Maruti compacts, Indica, Fusion/Fiesta, Accent/Verna, City, Civic.

Vasudev, thanks a lot for providing these figures.
I would request you to continue publishing these figures every month. I guess sometimes it gets tought for Kaspurv to publish withing first 15 days of the months. Your figures does surely show the trend before gettting vehicle line based break-up.
Please keep the good work going.

Definitely a story worth writing for

Totally agree with you Amit.. According to me GM is doing in India what Ford is doing in US.
1. Bring very good car line up.
2. Price it challengingly.
3. Attract customers with every way possible

On other hand Ford is doing what GM is doing in US
1. Sleep with old product line up.
2. Not much improvement in marketing and sales activities.

Only Figo seems to be thier hope, that too having missed the bus of Auto Expo. Let god be with them.

I agree GM is a great turnaround story in India. It simply baffles me why they went with Chinese (SAIC) collaboration. What was the need if they are doing so well? I am sure they did not need a huge capital investment in India at this stage. Did I miss something?

Cheap Chinese products do not have a good reputation in India and I can only hope it does not do an irreparable damage to GM India. I, for one, will think 10 times before buying a GM-SAIC product. Trust plays a big part in buying a car and very few of us trust Chinese companies/products.

thanks for sharing vasudeva.

the one highlight of this sheet is -

TATA Indica has fallen from 9111 to 4228

and punto has dropped to just 532 units (i assume fiat was not able to sell any palio). dismal.

i hope its not a typo.

if its not. what the hell went wrong with indica?

In 2008 vista was launched hence the new car mania and also considering the launch of Manza this year along with Punto which must have taken away serious chunk from the pie. I plant had anything to do with it because cars are easily available at dealerships.

Actually it is 37% drop not 50% see the link.

I think Suzuki should be worried about beat.

Official sales figures.
