Passenger car sales in India has increased by 33% last month. As per several websites, a total of 153,845 (some say 155,000) cars were sold in Feb 2010. In Feb 2009, a total of 115,505 cars were sold (SIAM figure). Sale of trucks increased by 87% to 58,024 units. India currently produces approximately 2 million (or 20 lac) cars per year and this is expected to rise to 6 million (or 60 lacs) in 10 years! And the best part, the government is hiking duties and taxes on vehicles. There seems to be no stopping Indians in this car buying spree!

It again proves that anything with "Maruti" label will sell. The same product - "Versa" was selling hardly (or none at all - a failed Maruti product).

Maruti just rebrands it, few touches here and there, some stripping down and voila a VFM product is born and Indian junta grabs it - it now sells in thousands...

That the Versa bombed big time itself proves that a Maruti label by itself will not ensure good sales.

The difference here being Maruti was willing to learn from their mistakes and rectify it unlike Honda(Jazz).

This can be attributed to the fact that the excise was going to be hiked in the Budget which everyone was sure about. Many people bought car in Feb for this particular reason & thus the high sales in Feb.

Thanks karpusv,

Surprised at the S class wow that is a huge jump? Also the C looks like it caught up very well from Jan sales. What I'm disappointed is the E class with its new lower priced variants has fallen in terms of sales and pretty close to the 5 which is now being phased out.

Thanks Vasu. It would be really great if you can post modelwise break up of different segments.

Who's complaining? Not me for sure. If Maruti (with its Eeco) and Tata (with its Nano) can offer affordable vehicles or "stripped down" versions of their products at a mouth-watering price tag, I only hope other manufacturers do something similar.

Its quite surprising that the Linea sales have gone down to 828 odd levels and Punto has gone up to 1428.

Guess quite a few people are waiting for the T-Jet.

With the launch of Punto Sports and Linea T-Jet. Fiat would be seeing this numbers rise quite a bit

Try to understand how excel works and what DIV/O means.

To avoid the "DIV/0", just have an IF() to check the 'divisor cell' is 0 value, if it is, set the 'result cell' to zero value.

It has become increasingly difficult trying to get the model-wise sales data from my source.

My source was adamant on not sharing it coz he feels there is no value addition by posting it on forums, as majority of the people just type out what is directly visible and evident, without contributing to any kind of healthy discussion or analysis .

Somehow managed to squeeze it out of him after convincing him that I'd place a request for healthy, meaningful and logical analysis of these figures like:

Examples:
1. It is visible that Jazz isnt doing great numbers. What would be appreciated from readers is an insight on "Why" it isn't doing good?

2. Palio sales have come down to just 2 nos. What does this mean? Has it got to do something with the product or the company?

3. Alto still does awesome numbers inspite of many new cars. Why is it so?

Please keep the logic flowing, so that I can request the data regularly again.
