This coupe was made from 1957 to 1959. The production run produced 1,500 cars altogether.
One expects microcars like this to have an air-cooled engine, but this baby had a two-cylinder two-stroke 690 cc thermo-siphon water-cooled engine that put out a max. of 22 bhp @ 3500 rpm.
Strangely, despite a massive looking radiator mounted at the rear of the engine compartment, there is no engine driven cooling fan.
Also notice that each spark plug has its own ignition coil.
A 32 litre fuel tank shared engine compartment space, with the dimunitive engine.
It had front wheel drive through a three-speed non-synchromesh transaxle.
The body was a wooden box frame with bolted plastic fenders and metal bonnet, doors and roof.
Mechanicals included Rack and pinion steering and would you believe it -- mechanical (non-hydraulic) cable-operated drum brakes?

1959 Toyopet Crown Custom with rear suicide rear doors. Its tailfins aped automotive America of the late ’fifties.
Toyota Motor was started by the Toyoda family of Japan. They used the brand
Toyopet, briefly around the turn of the ’sixties.
In 1955, Toyota’s Toyopet Crown, was the first Japanese-designed family car.
It had a ladder chassis and double wishbone coil-sprung front suspension, three-leaf springs at the rear and rear-wheel drive.
Its conventional 4-cylinder 1897 cc OHV engine put out 77 BHP @ 5000 rpm (like a Cielo). But that was too weak an engine for too heavy a car.
The Japanese copied American-style body-design hoping that Americans would buy it.
Toyota's advertising touted its "World's greatest automotive value" [sic].
The ad copy proclaimed, "The measure of value for 1959 has already been set: room and comfort plus economy. Toyopet offers four-door entry convenience ... the comfortable ride of a big car ... and still, Toyopet is inexpensive to operate and maintain. This is value unattained in any other automobile ... regardless of price. Here’s an original 1959 ad.
America was not impressed. Americans found the Toyopets to be cheap cars with mediocre acceleration and handling
compared to their 1950s, V8 Chevrolets and Studebakers.

Japan back then, was known as a producer of cheap, inferior goods (like China today).
The 50-year old Prof. William Deming taught Japanese top management, statistical process control and techniques to improve design, service, product quality, testing and sales.
Japan version 2, won global acclaim for innovative high-quality products and grew in economic power. Naturally they made him a hero.
Only when Japan became synonymous with quality, could they win over the American market.

In the Toyopet case, opinions about Japan, their urge to play in the US market and statistical quality processes.
Don't we ignore the fading of novelty in clubs singing praises about the same brands and models, over and over again, holding events year after year in their honor. and celebrating different owners and cities and pointing out the same mismatched parts and registration numbers?

It is the Playboy made from 1946 to 1949 by the Playboy Motor Car Corporation.Around 97 Playboy cars were built but all of them were used for publicity and never offered for sale to the public.
